It is dedicated to highlighting the work of artists that embrace experimentalism\, are informed by traditions\, and demonstrate the confidence to combine complex concepts into unified works. \nAs a series that supports works of (but not limited to) experimental notation\, electro-acoustic performance\, conduction\, compositions with improvisation\, avant jazz\, free improvisation\, chamber music and electronic noise\, the AMS is an active and supportive element for bay area musicians and community members. Both emerging and established artists are invited to perform on the series. This opportunity breathes life and inspiration into performers\, composers\, and audience members. Since it’s inception Aram Shelton has curated the series and managed performances. In the past several months he has been joined by Jacob Felix Heule and Crystal Pascucci\, in both administerial and curatorial roles. As active performers\, Shelton\, Pascucci and Heule are familiar with the performance practices of creative music in the Bay Area and see the AMS as working toward the development of the artistic community\, providing opportunities for musicians to regularly present work. Over the course of the series\, more than 100 local musicians have been given the opportunity to perform in acts ranging from 20 piece large groups to solo and duo performances. Notable artists who have performed include ROVA\, the Oakland Active Orchestra\, Lisa Mezzacappa’s Bait and Switch\, Moe!kestra\, James Fei Alto Quartet\, Aaron Novik’s Thorny Brocky\, and Phillip Greenlief’s Citta di Vitti. \nThe Active Music Series continues at the Uptown Nightclub\, a well known and centrally located venue that does not normally have creative music\, as a way to give local performing musicians the opportunity to present new works to new listeners\, while also fostering an environment focused on the social community as a way for musicians to meet other local musicians in hopes of spurring on further creative developments and collaborations. \nAll concerts of the Active Music Series are supported through donations. Listings can be found on the Transbay Calendar and at bayimproviser.com.

SUMMARY:Marshall House Project\, Major Powers & The Lo-Fi Symphony\, Ultra Cinco
DESCRIPTION:Get your funk on with 3 of the Bay Area’s hottest acts: Marshall House Project (Santa Rosa)\, Major Powers & The Lo-Fi Symphony (Richmond) and Ultra Cinco from San Francisco! \n8pm\, $10\, 21+ \nMarshall House Project is a driving soul-funk outfit with one foot rooted in the deep pockets of the past and the other fearlessly exploring the deep fry of the future. The sound is an electric eclectic love-child: the product of an affair between Jimi Hendrix and the Funky Meters\, after a long night of drinking with space aliens\, and jamming to Bob on the jukebox. The power quartet delivers a mash-up of energetic funk and slinky soul with a psychedelic twist and a chili salt rim. The mission: to create an uplifting dance experience\, spun full of twists and turns\, interlaced with conscious reflective lyrics\, expanding\, contracting and alive like a universe unto itself. \nMajor Powers & The Lo-Fi Symphony \n \nULTRA CINCO is a San Francisco based quintet that plays tight\, original arrangements on bass\, drums\, guitar\, saxophone and trumpet.  It’s a combination of funk\, soul\, afrofunk\, groove and jazz\, with improvised solos and guest vocalists.

SUMMARY:ActiveMusic: Elective Infinities\, Zachary Watkins\, Ochs/Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series Presents: \nElective Infinities \nZ A C H A R Y J A M E S W A T K I N S \nLarry Ochs/Donald Robinson Duo \n—————————————– \n9:00 PM doors. 9:30 PM music. \nSuggested donation $5-15 \nElective Infinities \nComposer/guitarist Nathan Clevenger was born in Oakland\, California and has been composing music informed by his voracious consumption of jazz\, classical\, and popular music from around the world\, and an obsession with the written word\, from an early age. \nNathan also leads the sci-fi-chamber-rock band Elective Infinities\, featuring Sarah Zaharako\, Eric Perney\, Phillip Greenlief and Robert Lopez. There is also a new trio project gestating as well as a continually growing book of chamber music. \nZ A C H A R Y J A M E S W A T K I N S \nB L A C K F I E L D \nNew compositions begin with the invention of a tuning. I create tunings based on desires to explore harmonic territory\, periodicity\, composite waveforms\, resonance and texture. It is my affinity for rich resonances and textures that informs many aspects of my music. I explore the harmonic series\, live processing\, site-specific resonant spaces and the spatial diffusion of sound sources to achieve rich\, saturated environments. I prefer to work site specifically\, observing the acoustic properties of a space and shaping new works around these perceived phenomenon. \nhttps://vimeo.com/144457900

Performances between 8 and 10pm. \nFeature: ~ Jade VELVET \nBeautiful sounds of ache and wonder. Jade VELVET is comprised of Jade Way (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) Jake Peake (keyboardist)\, Issielle “Ice” Johnson (lead guitarist) and Joey D’Alfonso (drummer extraordinaire). https://jadeway.bandcamp.com/ \nKarinda Dobbins ~Motor City native Karinda Dobbins was born into a politically active family of skilled storytellers and sharp wits. Her worldview was shaped by their accounts of protest\, civil rights and empowerment\, weighty subjects that were always leavened with humor. Whenever she heard the grownups laughing long past her bedtime\, she took that as her cue to sneak out of her room and eavesdrop while they entertained themselves with Richard Pryor records. She not only listened\, she learned\, and grew up to hold her own as a keen comedic commentator. Dobbins moved from Michigan to California’s Bay Area and responding to repeated dares from a girlfriend who challenged her to try making the crowd laugh at an open mic. Spurred on by the enthusiastic feedback\, Karinda decided to see where comedy would take her and began honing her craft at more venues. To date\, she has appeared at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival; featured at Bay Area comedy clubs the Punch Line and Cobb’s; opened for Hari Kondabolu\, Trevor Noah and toured with W. Kamau Bell. Karinda made her primetime national television debut on Coast-to-Coast Episode 1 on NickMom Night Out. \nUpcoming Shows http://laffq.com/karinda.dobbins \nSamantha Sipin ~ A strong songstress. https://soundcloud.com/samanthasipin \nAlexis Blair ~ Guitarist\, bassist\, drummer\, singer\, songwriter. SUMMARY:TPT presents Alicia BT and Peaches for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special edition of Two Piece Tuesdays. Peaches for Freedom will be hosting a coming together of any and all for the discussion of how we can resist this current situation. We also have the extraordinary delight of of featuring music artist Alicia B.T. \nDiscussion: 7 to 8pm and on. \nMusic: 8pm. \nFree \nAlicia BT is a young Franco-American singer\, musician\, author\, and composer. Her music is inspired by many cultures. She started improvising songs as a child and was accepted at age 11 in the Jazz program of Marciac’s Junior High School in France. From there\, she was admitted to the artistic program at CEPMO High School after which she got a State scholarship to study theatre\, mime\, and dance at L’oeil du Silence in the south of France\, run by Anne Sicco. There\, she studied among talented artists and teachers. She studied composing and singing at La Manufacture de la Chanson in Paris. She then graduated and started traveling. She has been performing in many venues and in the streets wherever she goes. \nHer street performance experience; her encounters with people; her spiritual path; and her concern for humanity are the main sources of her inspiration. One of her encounters was with Michael Rodriguez which led to the recording her Album L’innatendu d’une grande personne. https://soundcloud.com/aliciabt \nPeaches For Freedom: The point of this meet-up will be to discuss and brainstorm practical ideas for how to resist the current situation. There are many issues at stake: Public Parks\, the EPA\, Health Care\, Women’s reproductive rights\, the NEA\, LGBTQ rights\, Overturning Voter Restrictions\, Privatized prisons\, the Dakota Pipe Line\, The Wall as well as resisting administration appointees and measures. I will bring paper and pens. You can also bring any information you think is worth sharing about any of these issues or one I have not mentioned. Particularly encouraged are specific suggestions about action ie: email this particular senator about this particular issue\, organizing a tour bus to go visit and talk to the rust belt\, guerilla art ideas etc. \nEveryone is invited. All ideas and suggestions will be accepted. We do not need to agree on anything other than that we are against the current president and what he represents. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/1042492392466679/?hc_ref=SEARCH

SUMMARY:Big Brother and the Holding Company with The Love Dimension
DESCRIPTION:The Uptown is thrilled to present BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY with The Love Dimension on Jan 13th! Get advance tix now – $20! \nBig Brother and the Holding Company is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1965 as part of the same psychedelic music scene that produced the Grateful Dead\, Quicksilver Messenger Service\, and Jefferson Airplane. They are best known as the band that featured Janis Joplin as their lead singer. Their 1968 album Cheap Thrills is considered one of the masterpieces of the psychedelic sound of San Francisco; it reached number one on the Billboardcharts\, and was ranked number 338 in Rolling Stone‘s the 500 greatest albums of all time. \nSan Francisco musical collective The Love Dimension steeped itself in the music of the psychedelic era of the ’60s then infused it with the sound of ‘90s grunge and other more contemporary influences to create “mind-expanding music” for the 21st century. Resonating with the consciousness expanding goals of the ‘60s psychedelic movement\, The Love Dimension “creates sonic architecture for the benefit of all sentient beings across the multi-verse.” Get a sneak peak of their live show HERE. \nDoors 8pm\, 21+

SUMMARY:Active Music: Ishcted\, Amendola Trio & Fibers+Gargantius Effect
DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series Presents: \nI SHOULD HAVE CUT THE EYES DIFFERENT \nScott Amendola Trio \nFibers + Gargantius Effect \n—————————————– \n9:00 PM doors. 9:30 PM music. \nSuggested donation $5-15 \nI SHOULD HAVE CUT THE EYES DIFFERENT \ncut wrong from unequal parts of the new music\, noise\, and electronic music underground–I SHOULD HAVE CUT THE EYES DIFFERENT features Thomas Day (Hans Grüsel’s Krankenkabinet)\, Matt Ingalls (sfSound)\, and Jake Rodriguez (bran(…)pos) performing the electro-acoustic soundtrack to that creep in your closet. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtwsKJP92sQ \nScott Amendola Trio \nScott Amendola (on drums/percussion/electronics)\, Jason Hoopes (electric bass)\, Karl Evangelista (electric guitar) \nFor Scott Amendola\, the drum kit isn’t so much an instrument as a musical portal. As an ambitious composer\, savvy bandleader and capaciously creative foil for some of the world’s most inventive musicians\, Amendola applies his wide-ranging rhythmic virtuosity to a vast array of settings. His closest musical associates include guitarists Jeff Parker\, Nels Cline and Charlie Hunter\, Hammond B-3 organist Wil Blades\, ROVA saxophonist Larry Ochs\, and Tin Hat clarinetist Ben Goldberg\, players who have each forged a singular path within and beyond the realm of jazz. \nhttp://www.scottamendola.com/presskit/index.html \nFibers + Gargantius Effect \nThe Gargantius Effect is the brainchild of Murray Campbell (violin\, oboe and electronics) and Randy McKean (reeds). Like the Stanislaw Lem story of the same name\, in which armies of warring soldiers are linked together to form a peaceful\, blissfully-aware omni-mind\, so\, too\, these longtime collaborators and Nevada County natives transform the connections and crossfires of the various genres in which they usually find themselves—the Euro-café of Beaucoup Chapeaux\, Balkan swing of Chickenbonz\, chamber jazz of Bristle—into scintillating bits of free improvisation\,compositional constructs and mechanized mayhem. \nFibers is the electroacoustic noise of Wes Steed (electronics) and Kevin Corcoran (percussion)\, an ongoing project split geographically between Sacramento and San Francisco. These duos join in quartet to create an improvised sonic atmosphere of textures and tones ducking and darting\, swelling and settling\, in an intriguing meeting of instrumental timbres. \nhttps://norcalnoisefest.bandcamp.com/track/wes-steed-co-sacramento \nActive Music Series \nThe Uptown Nightclub \n1928 Telegraph\, Oakland \n9:00 PM doors. 9:30 PM music. \nSuggested donation $5-15 \nactivemusic.wordpress.com

SUMMARY:ANDRE NICKATINA's Puff Party & Benefit for Ghost Ship
DESCRIPTION:Andre Nickatina brings his brand new show to the Uptown! In solidarity with the Oakland community\, 50% of the proceeds for this event will be donated to families and friends of the Ghost Ship fire. \nGet tickets now! \nBorn and raised in the Fillmore District of San Francisco\, Andre Nickatina has been a Hip-Hop/Rap luminary since the release of his critically acclaimed debut\, “The New Jim Jones”. A favorite at public venues and on college campuses\, Andre Nickatina continues to sustain a loyal fan-base\, while engaging new supporters throughout North America. Nickatina’s classic stage show combined with his rare interviews\, maintains his mystery and unique musicianship that has spanned two decades. \nThe longevity of Nickatina speaks for itself. An award-winning MC and producer (2005 Bay Area Artist of The Year / Album of The Year for “Bullets”)\, Nickatina’s vision has expanded beyond the 18 albums (and hundreds of thousands of sales) that he has executive-produced. Also\, a diverse artist\, Nickatina has gained critical acclaim for his work and vision as a filmmaker\, with more than seven films to his credit as either a director\, co-director\, executive producer\, producer or actor. \nChanging his name from Dre Dog to Andre Nickatina in 1996\, he transformed his career to a plateau that has allowed him to create and develop an entirely new fan base with his original flow\, distinct voice and lyrical explorations that few other MCs have displayed an ability to achieve. His third album\, “Raven In My Eyes\,” marked Nickatina’s shift as an artist and expanded his audience to the wildly enthusiastic college crowds that praise him with regular sellouts from coast to coast. In 2008 Nickatina completed a timeless masterwork that paired he and his friend\, Mac Dre (R.I.P.) together with the new classic\, “A Tale of Two Andres.” \nNickatina’s business acumen is as sharp and honorable as his presence on stage. Nickatina’s vision as an artist has been admired by many of his peers as he is seen as one of the last Bay Area Legends who was not only present during the golden-era of Hip-Hop\, but one of the few artists who has helped Hip-Hop grow and who has remained ultimately relevant with each successive album he has released. \nWithout saying so\, Nickatina has had his finger on the pulse of what is raw\, uncut and capable of capturing the mind and ears of listeners. Never one to follow or ride trends\, Andre Nickatina is a rare breed of artist… one of the last original trend setters. Nickatina does not do what the people want… rather the people want to know what Dre will do next.

DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n*Dick Dale show moved from October 6 to new date\, Dec 8th!* With Oakland country rock Grit and Gold opening at 9pm. \nDick Dale’s real name Richard Anthony Monsour born on May 4th\, 1937 wasn’t nicknamed “Guitar Legend” for nothing as he has invented the style single-handedly\, Surf/Rock based on Gene Krupa’s Drum rhythm and the indigenous people plus the wild animals roars as the sounds are part of his guitar playing and he is the Pioneer and Creator along with then like second father Leo Fender of Fender Equipment. Leo tested everything on Dick. No matter who copied or expanded upon Dicks Genius blueprint\, he remained the fieriest\, most technically gifted musician the genre ever produced and is considered the Worlds second most influential guitarist on the planet…God only knows who the first is? Dale’s pioneering use of Middle Eastern and Eastern European melodies (learned organically through his familial heritage) was among the first in any genre of American popular music\, and predated the teaching of such “exotic” scales in guitar-shredder academies by two decades. The breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique was unrivalled until it entered the repertoires of metal virtuosos like Eddie Van Halen\, and his wild showmanship made an enormous impression on the young Jimi Hendrix. But those aren’t the only reasons Dale was once called the father of heavy metal. Working closely with the Fender company\, Dale continually pushed the limits of electric amplification technology\, helping to develop new equipment that was capable of producing the thick\, clearly defined tones he heard in his head\, at the previously undreamed-of volumes he demanded. He also pioneered the use of portable reverb effects\, creating a signature sonic texture for surf instrumentals. And\, if all that weren’t enough\, Dale managed to redefine his instrument while essentially playing it upside-down and backwards — he switched sides in order to play left-handed\, but without re-stringing it (as Hendrix later did). Dick’s father was Lebanese\, his mother Polish. As a child\, he was exposed to folk music from both cultures\, which had an impact on his sense of melody and the ways string instruments could be picked. He also heard lots of big band swing\, and found his first musical hero in drummer Gene Krupa\, who later wound up influencing a percussive approach to guitar so intense that Dale regularly broke the heaviest-gauge strings available and ground his picks down to nothing several times in the same song. He taught himself to play country songs on the ukulele\, and soon graduated to guitar\, where he was also self-taught. His father encouraged him and offered career guidance\, and in 1954\, the family moved to Southern California. At the suggestion of a country DJ\, Monsour adopted the stage name Dick Dale\, and began performing in local talent shows\, where his budding interest in rockabilly made him a popular act. He recorded a demo song\, “Ooh-Whee Marie\,” for the local Del-Fi label\, which was later released as a single on his father’s new Del-Tone imprint and distributed locally. During the late ’50s\, Dale also became an avid surfer\, and soon set about finding ways to mimic the surging sounds and feelings of the sport and the ocean on his guitar. He quickly developed a highly distinctive instrumental sound\, and found an enthusiastic\, ready-made audience in his surfer friends. Dale began playing regular gigs at the Rendezvous Ballroom\, a once-defunct concert venue near Newport Beach\, with his backing band the Del-Tones; as word spread and gigs at other local halls followed\, Dale became a wildly popular attraction\, drawing 1\,000s of fans to every performance. In September 1961\, Del-Tone released Dale’s single “Let’s Go Trippin’\,” which is generally acknowledged to be the very first recorded surf/Rock instrumentals. “Let’s Go Trippin'” was a huge local hit\, and even charted nationally. Dale released a few more local singles\, including “Jungle Fever\,” “Miserlou\,” and “Surf Beat\,” and in 1962 issued his (and surf music’s) first album\, the groundbreaking Surfer’s Choice\, on Del-Tone. Surfer’s Choice sold like hotcakes around Southern California\, which earned Dale a contract with Capitol Records and national distribution for Surfer’s Choice. Dale was featured in Life magazine in 1963\, which led to appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and the Frankie/Annette film Beach Party; he also released the follow-up LP King of the Surf Guitar\, and went on to issue three more albums on Capitol through 1965. During that time\, he developed a close working relationship with Leo Fender\, who kept engineering bigger and better sound systems in response to Dale’s appetite for louder\, more maniacally energetic live performances. Surf music became a national fad\, with groups like the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean offering a vocal variant to complement the wave of instrumental groups\, all of which were indebted in some way to Dale. But in 1964\, the British Invasion stole much of surf’s thunder\, and Dale was dropped by Capitol in 1965. He remained a wildly popular local act\, but in 1966\, he was diagnosed with rectal cancer\, which forced him to temporarily retire from music. He beat the disease\, however\, and soon began pursuing other interests: owning and caring for a variety of endangered animals\, studying martial arts\, designing his parents’ dream house\, and learning to pilot planes. In 1979\, a puncture wound suffered while surfing off Newport Beach led to a pollution-related infection that nearly cost him his leg; Dale soon added environmental activist to his resumé. In addition to all of that\, Dale performed occasionally around Southern California throughout the ’70s and ’80s. In 1986\, Dale attempted to mount a comeback. He first recorded a benefit single for the UC-Irvine Medical Center’s burn unit (which had helped him recuperate from potentially serious injuries)\, and the following year appeared in the beach-movie sendup Back to the Beach. The soundtrack featured a duet between Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughan on the Chantays’ surf staple “Pipeline\,” which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental. In 1991\, Dale did a guest spot on an album by the San Francisco-based Psychefunkapus\, and a successful Bay Area gig got him signed with Hightone Records. The album Tribal Thunder was released in 1993\, but Dale’s comeback didn’t get into full swing until\, in 1994\, “Miserlou” was chosen as the opening theme to Quentin Tarantino’s blockbuster film Pulp Fiction. “Miserlou” became synonymous with Pulp Fiction’s ultra-hip sense of style\, and was soon licensed in countless commercials (as were several other Dale tracks). As a result\, Tribal Thunder and its 1994 follow-up Unknown Territory attracted lots of attention\, earning positive reviews and surprisingly strong sales. In 1996\, he supported the Beggars Banquet album Calling Up Spirits by joining the normally punk- and ska-oriented Warped Tour. Dale refocused on touring over the years in the past along with owning two of the largest nightclubs in Southern Ca. . He returned years ago with a new CD in 2001\, Spacial Disorientation and then much more has happened in his later years.\nDick is married to the love of his entire life Lana Dale as Lana Dale is Dick’s Manager/Booking Agent/PR/Filmographer and Photographer and as well over the years has created all of the Dick Dale Merch. SUMMARY:Trails and Ways\, Makeunder\, Acid Ghost
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets! \nFrom overgrown houses in north Oakland\, Trails and Ways make guitar pop\, thick with warm noise\, driving beats\, four voices\, and the open chords of bossa nova. Take college commune roommates\, have them live for stints in Brazil and Spain\, bring them home together with the sparks of songs\, see what catches flame. \nEarly singles “Nunca” and “Mtn Tune” rocketed them to the top of the blogosphere charts\, followed by national tours and opening spots for Tycho\, Stars\, and Mac DeMarco. Debut album Pathology landed in 2015\, earning the band a spot on Barsuk Records and São Paulo’s Balaclava Records\, and launching the band to shows across North America and Brazil. \nTheir lyrics and stands for environmental & social justice led Time Magazine to call them “decidedly political”\, their sound “lush and worldly”. FADER says they’re “seriously encouraging me to switch from blue jeans to bathing suits until further notice.” 32 Ft/Sec blog says “The party\, the Good Life\, is out there somewhere\, likely south and it sounds exactly like this.” \nMakeunder is the moniker of songwriter Hamilton Ulmer. Trained as a composer\, Ulmer’s work is the byproduct of a seismic collision between symphonic and pop music\, part Richard Wagner and David Byrne\, part Bélá Bartók and Stevie Wonder\, part Benny Goodman and Dirty Projectors. 2015 saw the release of Makeunder’s Great Headless Blank\, a six-song EP about the circumstances and consequences of Ulmer’s father’s passing from lung cancer. NPR Music’s Bob Boilen called it “one of the most outstanding and challenging new bits of music I’ve heard this year […] “Great Headless Blank” is punctuated by sax and claps that glue the off-kilter soaring vocals like fingers holding onto a cliff. I sensed the song was about desperation and hope but honestly I was simply fascinated by a sound filled with choral harmonies and influences that could include Béla Bartók or Ornette Coleman or Talking Heads.” \nAcid Ghost \nDoors 9pm\, 21+ \nGet Tickets!
