SUMMARY:mssv (Mike Baggetta\, Mike Watt\, Stephen Hodges)
DESCRIPTION:Friday the 13th! \nPost-genre power trio mssv was formed early in 2019 when guitarist Mike Baggetta joined up with bassist Mike Watt (MINUTEMEN\, fIREHOSE\, The Stooges) and drummer Stephen Hodges (Mavis Staples\, Tom Waits\, David Lynch) to tour on his Wall of Flowers album (BIG EGO Records\, featuring Watt and drumming legend Jim Keltner). After a hugely successful US tour performing music that ran the gamut from original electro-free-jazz improvisations\, driving new-rock anthems and covers of The Stooges and more from Watt’s first punk rock opera “Contemplating the Engine Room”\, mssv has proved a fearless band.\nFeaturing live electronic processing by both Baggetta and Hodges\, as well as Watt’s relentlessly driving bass and vocals\, mssv has been able to not only show what it means to be a band in the modern post-genre landscape\, but is well on their way to defining it.\nmssv will release a new live album in December 1st on Striped Light Records and begin production on a new studio album that same month after this run of California-only preview shows.\n___\n“The chemistry is palpable\, the vibe is loose\, and the songs are all worlds unto themselves.” -Aquarium Drunkard \n“Mike Baggetta is a genre-blurring guitar hero…at the forefront of an army of guitar innovators”. -Brad Cohan\, JazzTimes \n“A true supergroup power trio\, ala a modern day Cream” -Guitar Moderne \n“Mike Baggetta makes stealthy\, mysterious music … he’s trying to do something personal with collective improvisation without ever getting in the way of beauty.” -Ben Ratliff\, New York Times \n“…a kind of post-Frisellian sonic explorer … with his wild whammy-bar articulations\, ambient looping and rippling arpeggios … full of subversive surprises\, hellacious skronking\, string-scraping and a general hornets’ nest of fuzz-toned dissonance” -Bill Milkowski\, DownBeat Magazine / Slate Magazine\n___\nopeners Henry Kaiser & Scott Amendola\nFor the past 40 years\, Bay Area-based radical guitarist\, ethnomusicologist and composer Henry Kaiser has been at the forefront of creative music. He has been nominated for a Grammy for his work with acclaimed director\, Werner Herzog and has conducted research as a scientific diver and videographer for the US Antarctic program. He has also been a pioneer in the realm of effects\, looping and extended techniques for the guitar. \nFor Scott Amendola\, the drum kit isn’t so much an instrument as a musical portal. Over a career spanning more than three decades\, Amendola has forged deep ties across the country\, and throughout the world. As an ambitious composer\, savvy bandleader\, electronics explorer\, first-call accompanist\, and capaciously creative foil for some of the world’s most inventive musicians\, Amendola applies his wide-ranging rhythmic virtuosity to a vast array of settings\n___\n21+ with valid ID\nThe Uptown is located just around the corner from the 19th Street BART station and is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Trevor Dunn | Phillip Greenlief | Scott Amendola Trio
DESCRIPTION:Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds) | Trevor Dunn (contrabass) | Scott Amendola (drums/electronics/percussion) \nScott Amendola (drums\, electronics)\, Trevor Dunn (contrabass) and Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds) have a collective and individual history that spans three decades and many continents. They have recorded as acclaimed duo records and performed up and down the west coast as a trio. While the members have been active in pairs in numerous ensembles\, this is their first set of performances as a trio in nearly 20 years. Their approach to free improvisation is to explore the many genres of music they are known for\, which spans rock\, metal\, funk\, jazz\, post-classical and film music. Expect the level of excitement to be high – these musicians are ecstatic to be working together again as a unit and are ready to deliver that joy to their audiences. \nPhillip Greenlief – Since his emergence on the west coast in the late 1970s\, Evander Music founder and saxophonist Phillip Greenlief has achieved international critical acclaim for his recordings and performances with musicians and composers in the post-jazz continuum as well as new music innovators and virtuosic improvisers. He has performed and recorded with Wadada Leo Smith\, Meredith Monk\, Rashaun Mitchell and They Might Be Giants; albums include THAT OVERT DESIRE OF OBJECT with Joelle Leandre\, and ALL AT ONCE with FPR (Frank Gratkowski\, Jon Raskin\, PG). Now celebrating the release of LANTSKAP LOGIC with Fred Frith and Evelyn Davis on Clean Feed (2019). Recent residencies have included Headlands Center for the Arts and the Banff Center for the Arts. His critical writing has been published in Artforum\, SFMOMA’s OPEN SPACE\, and Signal to Noise. \nTrevor Dunn – hails from Eureka\, California. The son of a mother and father. At an early age Mr. Dunn found himself playing clarinet. Thank the lord he found the bass. Once he realized there was no clarinet player in Kiss\, he permanently relocated his musical endeavors to the bass guitar\, which eventually lead to the stand-up bass. He leads various bands: from the effervescent “Trio Convulsant”\, to the angular-pop/rock of “Madlove”. He’s a co-founding member of the confounding “Mr. Bungle”\, and has been seen many times around the globe with the various ensembles of Mr. John Zorn. Trevor has also been caught bowling with “The Melvins”. \nScott Amendola – was born in Englewood\, New Jersey. Studied at Berklee college of music\, and lives in the bay area. He composed a symphony called “Fade To Orange” which features Mr. Dunn\, and guitarist Nels cline (with whom he’s played music with since the mid 90’s\, and is a member of “The Nels Cline Singers” along with Trevor). As a sideman\, Amendola has performed and recorded with a vast\, stylistically varied roster of artists\, including Bill Frisell\, John Zorn\, Mike Patton\, Mondo Cane\, John Scofield\, Cibo Matto\, John Dieterich from Deerhoof\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Bruce Cockburn\, Madeleine Peyroux\, Joan Osborne\, Jacky Terrasson\, Shweta Jhaveri\, Phil Lesh\, Sex Mob\, Kelly Joe Phelps\, Larry Klein\, Carla Bozulich\, Wayne Horvitz\, Johnny Griffin\, Julian Priester\, Sonny Simmons\, Pat Martino\, Jim Campilongo\, Bobby Black\, Larry Goldings\, Paul McCandless\, Rebecca Pidgeon\, and the Joe Goode Dance Group. \ndoors at 7p | show at 8p \n21+ with valid ID \nThe Uptown is located just around the corner from the 19th Street BART Station and is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Tatsuya Nakatani\, Degradient\, Sharon Tate Fetus Explosion
DESCRIPTION:Tatsuya Nakatani:::::::\nTatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde sound artist\, composer\, and master percussionist originally from Osaka\, Japan. Based in the USA since 1994\, he lives in Truth or Consequences\, NM. Since the late 1990’s\, Nakatani has released over 80 recordings in the USA and Europe and has toured extensively; performing solo\, in collaboration with other artists\, and with his large ensemble project – the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. He presents masterclasses\, workshops\, and lectures across the USA and around the world. \nNakatani’s approach to music is visceral\, non-linear and intuitively primitive\, expressing an unusually strong spirit while resisting genre. He creates sound with both traditional and extended percussion techniques. Utilizing his adapted bowed gong\, drums\, cymbals\, singing bowls\, metal objects and bells\, as well as various sticks\, kitchen tools\, and his breath he manifests an intense and organic music that represents a very personal sonic world. His approach is steeped in the sensibilities of free improvisation\, experimental music\, jazz\, metal and noise\, and yet retains the sense of space and quiet beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music. His percussive instruments can imitate the sound of a trumpet\, a stringed instrument\, an electronic device…to the extent that it becomes difficult to recognize the source of the sound. He has devoted himself to a musical aesthetic where rhythm gives way to pulse\, often in a way that is not always audible or visible\, in currents that incorporate silence and texture. Nakatani’s primary music activities include solo percussive performance\, his Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO)\, and collaborations with musicians and dancers both in live performance and recordings. \nTatsuya Nakatani has spent the last 20 years traveling and performing extensively throughout the United States and beyond. His constant touring fosters the raw and fresh quality in his music which can only survive through an open willingness to share energy\, culture\, music and self on a global human scale.\nhttp://www.tatsuyanakatani.com/ \nSharon Tate Fetus Explosion::::::::\nSharon Tate Fetus Explosion is currently a solo project of Sarah Lockhart. No Wave-inspired\, post-industrial\, art-damaged\, and generally damaged. Huddling under the noise umbrella\, some of STFE’s material is songs with words. Instrumentation includes metal percussion\, electronics\, and vocals. Content includes: real estate development\, social media trends\, normcore\, and the inner lives of domestic animals.https://sharontatefetusexplosion.bandcamp.com/releases \nKyle Bruckmann’s Degradient::::::\nAfter 13 busy years maintaining poly-stylistic sideman duties and long-distance collaborations with former Chicago comrades\, Bruckmann finally busts out as bandleader of a Bay Area ensemble. Gleefully colliding elements of skronk\, fried analog noise and dark prog within a Creative Music framework\, DEGRADIENT adds a significant chunk of heavy to his signature gimmicks of jittery polyrhythmic clatter\, formal complexity\, black humor\, and all-around sensory overload. The core quartet features fellow Chicago ex-pat Aram Shelton along with the in-demand rhythm section (currently driving groups including Jack O’ the Clock and the Fred Frith Trio) of Jason Hoopes and Jordan Glenn.\nhttp://kylebruckmann.com/projects/degradient/ \n$5 – $15 sliding scale\n21+ | wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:CANCELLED -- Defining the Avant-Garde
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 10 \nDefining the Avant-Garde \nSung Kim creates a new genre with Stop Motion animation & improvisation on hand made instruments. An improvisor\, sculptor\, and an instrument builder\, Kim studied ceramic sculpture at the Corcoran School of Art. It was there that Kim started building his own variations of the guitar. While attending The Art Institute of Chicago he began to deviate from the guitar to explore other techniques\, tonalities\, and sympathetic resonance. Now a long time Bay Area resident\, Kim has collaborated with many local musicians to explore his instruments in an improvisational context. \nZachary James Watkins’ composition ‘Peace Be Till’ commissioned by Kronos Quartet debuted in January at Carnegie Hall. Zachary has also received commissions from Cornish College of The Arts\, The Microscores Project\, the Beam Foundation\, Somnubutone Radio Series free103point9.org\, sfsound and the Seattle Chamber Players. His band Black Spirituals opened for pionering Drone Metal band Earth during their 2015 European tour. \nJohn Shiurba is a composer and guitarist whose musical pursuits include improvisation\, art-rock\, modern composition and noise. Shiurba has recorded and toured as a member of the bands Eskimo\, The Molecules\, Spezza Rotto\, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company\, Anthony Braxton’s ensemble and the SFSound Group. Cadence Magazine calls Shiurba a ‘wildly creative guitarist… anti-jazz\, anti-everything else\, yet utterly compelling.\nHe will be playing with trumpet player Tom Djll (Grosse Abfahrt\, hackMIDI\, BEAUTY SCHOOL\, TENDER BUTTONS)\nand percussionist Gino Robair (founding member of the Splatter Trio and Pink Mountain\, performed w/Tom Waits\, Anthony Braxton\, John Zorn\, Nina Hagen\, Terry Riley\, Lou Harrison\, John Butcher\, Derek Bailey\, Peter Kowald\, Otomo Yoshihide\, and the ROVA Saxophone Quartet). \nMusic begins at 9:30pm\n$10\n21+

SUMMARY:Active Music Series: Shelton / Heule\, Ashen Cleric\, Waxy Tomb
DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series presents:\n– Aram Shelton / Jacob Felix Heule duo\n– Nathan Clevenger’s Ashen Cleric\n– Shatter Pattern (Waxy Tomb) \nShatter Pattern\nCurrently growing offshoot-outgrowth-offspring of the Bay Area-based Waxy Tomb project\, Shatter Pattern reallocates the memory space activated during dreams in hopes of generating a shared access platform for reoccurring movement practices that can slow down and speed up time.\nsoundcloud.com/waxy-tomb \nAshen Cleric plays ominous nondenominational chamber music\, presented in suites of long-form\, modular pieces that continually blur the line between composition and improvisation. The music obliquely draws upon — and sometimes recklessly disfigures — religious themed music of the world. The latest project of Oakland composer Nathan Clevenger\, Ashen Cleric features Crystal Pascucci (cello)\, Cory Wright (tenor sax/alto flute)\, Jordan Glenn (drums/accordion)\, and Tim DeCillis (vibes/percussion). \nJacob Felix Heule is an improvising percussionist with a special interest in friction techniques. His music is shaped by intuition\, listening\, and following where the sounds lead. He embraces limited instrumentation – like a single drum and a single cymbal – as a commitment to exploring the depth of his instruments.\nhttp://www.heule.us/ \nAram Shelton is an improviser and composer who performs on saxophone\, clarinets\, and live electronics. He plays with a distinct\, harmonically rich sound and develops musical thoughts through constant motion\, tonal shifts and complex sounds alongside clear melodic and rhythmic constructs. His vocabulary utilizes the range of extended techniques including multiphonics and harmonics\, circular breathing\, wind sounds and an exploration of the outer ranges of the instrument. Shelton focuses on creative music grounded in and influenced by the rich history of avant-jazz and free improvisation; his writing and playing has been documented through more than two dozen albums to date. He’s been an integral member of the creative music communities in the Bay Area and Chicago\, has been living in Copenhagen since 2016 and is moving to Budapest in the fall.\nhttp://www.aramshelton.com/ \n  \nFacebook RSVP

SUMMARY:Active Music Series: Apartment D\, Madalyn Merkey\, Arkin / Glenn Duo
DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series presents:\n– Apartment D\n– Madalyn Merkey\n– Jon Arkin & Jordan Glenn \nApartment D is an electro-improv duo that explores sound and space by combining live electronic processing and experimental performance of voice and pipa during improvisation. Ingibjörg Friðriksdóttir (https://www.ingibjorgf.com/) brings a background of both experimental electronic music and vocal training from Iceland. Sophia Shen (http://www.shensiyang.com/) combines her traditional Chinese pipa playing techniques with her new approaches to the instrument. The unique soundscape and the emotional depth that the duo creates are a result of an exchange and convergence from two very contrasting musical backgrounds and cultures. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/ingibj-rg-fri-riksd-ttir/improvisation\nhttps://soundcloud.com/ingibj-rg-fri-riksd-ttir/hymn \nMadalyn Merkey creates sound events with simple sonic material—voice\, sine waves\, and pulses—to generate lush synthetic environments with the aid of acoustic readings from microphones and sensors. SUMMARY:CHROME - Record Release Party!
DESCRIPTION:Chrome was forged from the chaos and excess of mid-’70s Bay Area culture. The death throes of the Stooges and the accessibility of psychedelics led founding drummer Damon Edge to court sonic apocalypse. In 1976\, he was joined by guitarist Helios Creed\, and the two became the core of a sonic maelstrom that straddled proto-industrial\, acid-punk and lo-fi experimentation. The group’s influence has been vast\, though its success was obviously limited by the extremes of its expression and lack of a specific genre. Edge passed in 1995\, and since then\, Creed has resurrected the Chrome brand while simultaneously releasing over 20 solo albums. Techromancy\, the newest studio LP from the band will be on sale at this show\, and it handily recalls the best of Creed’s solo work while nodding to some of the more accessible Chrome tracks featured on the Half Machines From the Sun collection. Over-effected guitars cross streams with maniacal echoing vocals over bouncing\, repetitive drumbeats. Techromancy won’t burn out your remaining serotonin\, but it just might make you dance. NATHAN CARSON. \nGET TIX! \n8pm\, 21+\, $12

Since it’s inception Aram Shelton has curated the series and managed performances. In the past several months he has been joined by Jacob Felix Heule and Crystal Pascucci\, in both administerial and curatorial roles. Notable artists who have performed include ROVA\, the Oakland Active Orchestra\, Lisa Mezzacappa’s Bait and Switch\, Moe!kestra\, James Fei Alto Quartet\, Aaron Novik’s Thorny Brocky\, and Phillip Greenlief’s Citta di Vitti. \nThe Active Music Series continues at the Uptown Nightclub\, a well known and centrally located venue that does not normally have creative music\, as a way to give local performing musicians the opportunity to present new works to new listeners\, while also fostering an environment focused on the social community as a way for musicians to meet other local musicians in hopes of spurring on further creative developments and collaborations. \nAll concerts of the Active Music Series are supported through donations. SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays presents Mind & Matter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of writing\, Shock Corridor the film and saucy tunes by the one and only Ingrid Keir. Free. Happy Hour drinks until 7pm! \nVoice from the Field – Writing Gathering – 5:30 to 7pm.\nArt is very important in our current climate and can give voice to our suffering and triumphs. But there are also those – mental health professionals\, social justice lawyers\, social service professionals\, volunteers etc. – who do the hard work every day to alleviate that suffering. Their voices are also mightily important. We are creating a a space for these voices to gather and write their stories. This is the 1st of what will be a monthly gathering. Performances may ensue in the future. \nFilm: Shock Corridor\n1963. “In Shock Corridor\, the great American writer-director-producer Samuel Fuller masterfully charts the uneasy terrain between sanity and madness. Seeking a Pulitzer Prize\, reporter Johnny Barrett (Peter Breck) has himself committed to a mental hospital to investigate a murder. As he closes in on the killer\, insanity closes in on him. Constance Towers costars as Johnny’s coolheaded stripper girlfriend. With its startling commentary on racism and other hot-button issues in sixties America and its daring photography by Stanley Cortez\, Shock Corridor has had far-reaching influence.”\nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of www.lewtonbus.net \nDJ: Ingrid Keir. 7 to 9pm\nSoul\, Latin and the art of the chantuese.\nIngrid Keir is a poet\, performer and educator. SUMMARY:Active Music: Ishcted\, Amendola Trio & Fibers+Gargantius Effect
DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series Presents: \nI SHOULD HAVE CUT THE EYES DIFFERENT \nScott Amendola Trio \nFibers + Gargantius Effect \n—————————————– \n9:00 PM doors. 9:30 PM music. \nSuggested donation $5-15 \nI SHOULD HAVE CUT THE EYES DIFFERENT \ncut wrong from unequal parts of the new music\, noise\, and electronic music underground–I SHOULD HAVE CUT THE EYES DIFFERENT features Thomas Day (Hans Grüsel’s Krankenkabinet)\, Matt Ingalls (sfSound)\, and Jake Rodriguez (bran(…)pos) performing the electro-acoustic soundtrack to that creep in your closet. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtwsKJP92sQ \nScott Amendola Trio \nScott Amendola (on drums/percussion/electronics)\, Jason Hoopes (electric bass)\, Karl Evangelista (electric guitar) \nFor Scott Amendola\, the drum kit isn’t so much an instrument as a musical portal. As an ambitious composer\, savvy bandleader and capaciously creative foil for some of the world’s most inventive musicians\, Amendola applies his wide-ranging rhythmic virtuosity to a vast array of settings. His closest musical associates include guitarists Jeff Parker\, Nels Cline and Charlie Hunter\, Hammond B-3 organist Wil Blades\, ROVA saxophonist Larry Ochs\, and Tin Hat clarinetist Ben Goldberg\, players who have each forged a singular path within and beyond the realm of jazz. \nhttp://www.scottamendola.com/presskit/index.html \nFibers + Gargantius Effect \nThe Gargantius Effect is the brainchild of Murray Campbell (violin\, oboe and electronics) and Randy McKean (reeds). Like the Stanislaw Lem story of the same name\, in which armies of warring soldiers are linked together to form a peaceful\, blissfully-aware omni-mind\, so\, too\, these longtime collaborators and Nevada County natives transform the connections and crossfires of the various genres in which they usually find themselves—the Euro-café of Beaucoup Chapeaux\, Balkan swing of Chickenbonz\, chamber jazz of Bristle—into scintillating bits of free improvisation\,compositional constructs and mechanized mayhem. \nFibers is the electroacoustic noise of Wes Steed (electronics) and Kevin Corcoran (percussion)\, an ongoing project split geographically between Sacramento and San Francisco. These duos join in quartet to create an improvised sonic atmosphere of textures and tones ducking and darting\, swelling and settling\, in an intriguing meeting of instrumental timbres. \nhttps://norcalnoisefest.bandcamp.com/track/wes-steed-co-sacramento \nActive Music Series \nThe Uptown Nightclub \n1928 Telegraph\, Oakland \n9:00 PM doors. 9:30 PM music. \nSuggested donation $5-15 \nactivemusic.wordpress.com

DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series presents: \n– Ze Bib! (Robert Lopez & Shanna Sordahl) \n– Kelley Kipperman\, Aurora Josephson and Katerina Kopelevich \n– Oa (Matt Davignon & Hugh Behm-Steinberg) \nOa creates experimental music from the sounds of language. Writer Hugh Behm-Steinberg and sound manipulator Matt Davignon have recorded various anecdotes\, conversations and sung pitches from their peers\, neighbors\, musicians and other writers. Performing either as a duo or collaborating with other sound artists\, they break down these elements with samplers and digital turntables\, then rebuild them into improvised musical passages and narratives. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/oa-is-hugh-and-matt
