SUMMARY:Grab 'Em By The Songs
DESCRIPTION:Grab ‘Em By The Songs \nTuesday\, February 6 \n7:30 PM | No Cover \nHost and founder Kim Lembo present’s “Grab ‘Em By The Songs” the first Tuesdays of the month at The Uptown in downtown Oakland featuring women sharing songs in the round. \nFebruary Songwriters: \nKim Lembo\nWhether with her full band or\, solo Lembo brings blues\, with an edgy soulfulness combined with poetic lyrics and storytelling. Her voice is big and echoes a kind of Etta James meets Lucinda Williams if they played in a band with Janis Joplin. It is the sound of music that can not be defined by a singular genre. She sings from her soul with songs written from the heart.\nLembo has played all over the US and has recorded in France\, California\, and NY. From the stages of Paris to hiking up the side of the Great Wall of China with a guitar and a slightly broken foot\, she has brought her uniquely deep and powerful voice to thousands throughout the world. Lembo has a voice to be reckoned with and a story to be shared. \nKim Lembo can be found around the Bay Area rabble-rousing and playing/producing events. \n  \nPaige Clem\nPerhaps it’s the combination of her insatiable musical curiosity and her formative years spent growing up in the South\, but Paige Clem’s arrestingly direct lyrics and velvety\, unaffected vocals exude that most elusive of musical qualities — Soul. With a natural gift for connecting with an audience\, her roots-infused music is melodic and warm\, yet packs a punch with tales of loss and love. Described by Jambase as a “charismatic and affable singer-songwriter…with a sultry\, Jewel-reminiscent vocal quality\,” her folk-soul-with-a-dash-of-sass sound draws on threads of blues and Americana with an honest and often clever accessibility that offers listeners a refreshing departure from the formulaic nature of so much indie rock these days. \nPaige has served multiple stints as songwriter-in-residency at The Bazaar Cafe and is the creator\, curator and host of the popular “Songs About Something: Old\, New\, Borrowed and Blue Tunes in the Round”—an ongoing monthly songwriters-in-the-round series held at Albany’s Ivy Room. Her bluesy yet melodic approach to song has been shared from the stage at High Sierra Music Festival\, DelFest\, Hangtown Halloween Ball\, Cuko Rakko Music Festival\, ULUV Music Day and many of the Bay Area’s most popular haunts\, including The Fillmore\, Great American Music Hall\, Terrapin Crossroads\, Boom Boom Room\, Freight & Salvage\, Sweetwater Music Hall\, Ashkenaz and more. \nPaige will be featured in the upcoming documentary\, The Creative High\, and is currently recording her debut solo album slated to be released in early 2018. \n  \nAudrey Howard\n“Audrey Howard counts Ani DiFranco\, Sonic Youth\, and Led Zeppelin among her influences. Her distinctive songs reflect that blend of emotional rawness\, indie/experimental sounds\, and classic rock groove. Audrey is known for her sweet\, soulful voice\, her playful on-stage banter\, and her impressive guitar shredding. Don’t miss seeing this Bay Area treasure!” \nFacebook RSVP

SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays:The Kim Lembo Project & Gina Villalobos
DESCRIPTION:Two Piece Tuesdays is proud to present the wonderful music of Gina Villalobos & Kim Lembo as well as the film My Darling Clementine. \nMusic ~ Gina Villalobos & Kim Lembo \nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of www.lewtonbus.net\nMy Darling Clementine is a 1946 American Western film directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp during the period leading up to the gunfight at the OK Corral.\nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of the www.lewtonbus.net \nGINA VILLALOBOS\nKnown for holding her heart up in all its vulnerable lucidity\, her lines & melodies scrape away the layers of denial that get us through the everyday. Like the realist short stories of Raymond Carver\, her songs are visceral anthems in which one senses the bottom has fallen out\, making visible the seriousness of what’s at stake\, the songs affirm that possibility has always existed…and in fact still exists. \nVillalobos became one of the most acclaimed new artists in the alternative country community with her breakthrough album\, 2005’s Rock N Roll Pony when legendary BBC disc jockey Bob Harris called it “a contender for album of the year.” Her follow-up release\, Miles Away\, increased her profile and cemented the album as “timeless and combines every element that makes a recording a classic…” (Paste Magazine).\nVillalobos’ fourth solo album\, Days on Their Side\, reveals “a new depth with the slightest shift in light…taking the Lucinda Williams/Sheryl Crow model to a new level.” -(American Songwriter magazine). Her most recent offering\, Sola was described as “confident & instantly addictive.” (Mojo Magazine) \nIn late 2015\, Villalobos wrote and produced music for the Golden Globe Award– and Emmy Award–winning Amazon Studios TV show Transparent. The derivative work of the 1971 Sly and the Family Stone hit “Family Affair” featured the vocals of Ruby Friedman and was used in the trailer promoting the launch of the show’s second season. \nVillalobos is nothing if not dead serious. Her music is deeply rooted in time\, place\, and history. She’s the real thing: an artist\, someone who can show you where you are.\nwww.ginavillalobos.com/ \nKIM LEMBO\nKim Lembo is a Bay Area Musician with 30 years in the music business. In the 90’s and early 2000’s\, she was signed with indie label\, Blue Wave Records as well as French label\, Sky Ranch Records\, a subsidy of Virgin Records. With 4 releases under her belt\, she left the label’s and set off for the Bay Area to take a short hiatus from the business. The short hiatus turned into 15 well lived years.\nIn 2015 she came back strong with her self-released 5th album\, “45 Miles”\, an intimate portrait of her life in relationships and love. A slight departure from the blues/rock she had been doing\, “45 Miles” is more country blues and roots than rock/blues but as always\, features her soulful sound.\nCurrently\, Lembo can be found playing throughout the Bay Area and Pacific Northwest either solo or with her band “The Kim Lembo Project”\, a collection of rotating bay area musicians bringing everything from rocking guitar to middle eastern oud. The sound is raw\, original and retro. This in addition to producing events focusing on featuring women with her songwriting series and podcast\, Grab Em By The Songs.\nWhether with her full band or\, solo Lembo brings blues\, with an edgy soulfulness combined with poetic lyrics and storytelling. Her voice is big and echoes a kind of Etta James meets Lucinda Williams if they played in a band with Janis Joplin. It is the sound of music you cannot define by a singular genre. Lembo has a voice to be reckoned with and a story to be shared.\nKim Lembo can be found in the Bay Area California rabble rousing and playing/producing events.\nShe is originally from Syracuse\, New York.\nhttp://kimlembomusic.com/ \nStay after for the Active Music Series.

Her solo anti-folk music twists together folk and punk\, offering raw observations about survival in a predatory world\, queer love\, and sticking up for the underdog. Virago has been featured in national media including Bitch\, Advocate\, Rumpus\, and Curve magazines\, on NPR and PBS\, and on left-of-the-dial radio. No Depression christened her “Equal parts June Carter Cash\, Nick Cave and Murder By Death.” From Under the Basement magazine summed her up by saying\, “Imagine Bill Monroe and Sid Vicious having kids together.” Common Folk Music went a step further\, suggesting a sound equivalent to “the glint of a switchblade held to your throat.” \n

This week\, Two Piece Tuesdays brings you San Francisco’s Lee Vilensky Trio. \n“MY FAVORITE SONGS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INSTRUMENTALS\, ESPECIALLY WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY IMAGES\, FILM SCORES IN PARTICULAR….MUSIC THAT EVOKES A SCENE\, SOUND AS A PRELUDE TO ACTION AND MOVEMENT. \nI WANTED TO ASSEMBLE A BAND THAT PLAYED ALL INSTRUMENTALS SO THAT GROOVE AND FEEL\, MELODY AND HARMONY\, COULD BE FULLY ENJOYED\, UNENCUMBERED BY LYRICS. FORMED IN 2000 FROM THE REMAINS OF THE SWINGIN’ JOHNSONS\, WE DECIDED TO SWITCH THE FORMAT TO ALL INSTRUMENTALS DUE TO THE UNPREDICTABLE BEHAVIOR AND GENERAL UNSAVORY APPEARANCE\, HYGIENE AND HABITS OF MOST VOCALISTS. WHAT STARTED AS A SIDE BAND FOR WELL TRAVELED BAY AREA SIDEMEN\, HAS EVOLVED INTO ONE OF SF’s MOST POPULAR INSTRUMENTAL GROUPS AND THE PROGENITORS OF THE GENRE\, “SPY/SOUL”. OUR NEW CD\, “DESTINATION: LOVE”\, ON 658 RECORDS\, IS NOW AVAILABLE @ CDBABY\, ALONG WITH OUR 2011 RELEASE\,”DIRTY DEALINGS ON A LATIN MOON” – Lee Vilensky \nTuesday 8/22\n7-10PM \nFREE\n21+\nwheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays presents Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Another Tuesday Night of Free Live Music!\nThis week with Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs. \nLaney Lou and the Bird Dogs have been forging a fresh and energetic sound to the northwest music scene. Their live show is highlighted by unbridled energy\, and punctuated by songs performed with fervor and swagger. Fusing old time folk songs with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude\, the Bird Dogs push the envelope of what a string band is generally described as. They’ve been hitting the road hard since 2014\, sharing stages with Corb Lund\, Hayes Carll\, hurray for the riff raff\, the Mavericks\, Wynonna Judd\, Mark Chesnutt\, the lil’ smokies and many more. The Bird Dogs released their first album in the spring of 2016. Recorded live at basecamp studio\, the album is one that reflects their live show and makes you want to stomp your feet and crack open a beer.\nBorn under the big sky in Bozeman\, Montana\, Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs consist of Matt Demarais on banjo/vocals\, Ethan Demarais on bass\, Lena Schiffer on vocals/guitar\, Brian Kassay on fiddle/mandolin\, and newly added member Josh Moore on vocals/guitar.\nhttp://www.thebird-dogs.com/ \nNo Cover! 21+ \nRSVP and Share on Facebook!
