SUMMARY:Justin Oulett & Patrick Anseth (Free show)
DESCRIPTION:A free event with one of the finest duos in town.. what a real treat! \nAlthough specializing in jazz\, Patrick Anseth feels at home in most other groove based electric and acoustic guitar playing. He can hold down the fort as the only accompanist in any duo setting\, lead a traditional guitar trio\, or hang in a larger group without getting in the way of the piano player. He is a highly sensitive musician that completely debunks the theory that all guitar players are just loud. Many of his musician colleagues have remarked that “Patrick is the only guitar player I know that I on occasion have to tell to turn up”. \nJustin Ouellet has garnered a reputation as a fearless performer in the realms of jazz and contemporary music. In addition to cultivating an accomplished career as a classical musician on both violin and viola\, Ouellet moves effortlessly between a multitude of genres and styles such as Jazz\, R&B\, Funk\, Blues\, Hip-Hop\, Rock\, Flamenco\, and Jazz Manouche. Ouellet collaborates on violin & viola with an array of Bay Area artists. \n – – – \n21+ with valid ID \nThe Uptown is located just around the corner from the 19th Street BART Station and is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Washed Up: Extra Marching Band\, Oinga Boinga\, Mala Grena
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 31 \nExtra Marching Band presents Washed Up with: \nExtra Marching Band \nOinga Boinga \nMala Greña \nExtra Action Marching Band \n“It’s hard to convincingly argue that a background in high school marching band competitions is actually cool. At least\, it’s hard with words\, but the Extra Action Marching Band\, a mobile San Francisco Bay Area institution of brass and drums\, routinely proves its potential for unparalleled hipness in those cumbersome instruments and weird helmets that so many awkward teenagers gravitate toward for a sense of belonging. The Extra Action Marching Band features flag spinning\, varying degrees of nudity\, and\, if a recent sighting can be believed\, fake body parts grotesquely affixed to exposed skin. Cabaret flair crossed with paradiddle glee and wheezing horns — it’s John Philip Sousa’s nightmare\, the stifled band geek’s dream\, and an ensemble format typically associated with militarism and authority twisted into the service of chaos.” — East Bay Express \nOinga Boinga\nhttps://www.facebook.com/the.oinga.boinga/\nDISCLAIMER: This band may unload awesomesauce all over your eyes and up in your ears. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.\nWe are an all-female Oingo Boingo cover band. (Notice we didn’t say “tribute”\, you sniveling little weasels!) \nMala Greña\nhttps://www.facebook.com/MalaGrenaBand/\nMala Greña’s music fuses the bailado\, rhythm and percussion of cumbia\, chicha\, zapateo\, salsa\, and other latinoamerican rhythms with the unconventional song structures\, timings and gritty guitar lines of progressive and experimental rock music.

SUMMARY:Trevor Dunn | Phillip Greenlief | Scott Amendola Trio
DESCRIPTION:Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds) | Trevor Dunn (contrabass) | Scott Amendola (drums/electronics/percussion) \nScott Amendola (drums\, electronics)\, Trevor Dunn (contrabass) and Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds) have a collective and individual history that spans three decades and many continents. They have recorded as acclaimed duo records and performed up and down the west coast as a trio. While the members have been active in pairs in numerous ensembles\, this is their first set of performances as a trio in nearly 20 years. Their approach to free improvisation is to explore the many genres of music they are known for\, which spans rock\, metal\, funk\, jazz\, post-classical and film music. Expect the level of excitement to be high – these musicians are ecstatic to be working together again as a unit and are ready to deliver that joy to their audiences. \nPhillip Greenlief – Since his emergence on the west coast in the late 1970s\, Evander Music founder and saxophonist Phillip Greenlief has achieved international critical acclaim for his recordings and performances with musicians and composers in the post-jazz continuum as well as new music innovators and virtuosic improvisers. He has performed and recorded with Wadada Leo Smith\, Meredith Monk\, Rashaun Mitchell and They Might Be Giants; albums include THAT OVERT DESIRE OF OBJECT with Joelle Leandre\, and ALL AT ONCE with FPR (Frank Gratkowski\, Jon Raskin\, PG). Now celebrating the release of LANTSKAP LOGIC with Fred Frith and Evelyn Davis on Clean Feed (2019). Recent residencies have included Headlands Center for the Arts and the Banff Center for the Arts. His critical writing has been published in Artforum\, SFMOMA’s OPEN SPACE\, and Signal to Noise. \nTrevor Dunn – hails from Eureka\, California. The son of a mother and father. At an early age Mr. Dunn found himself playing clarinet. Thank the lord he found the bass. Once he realized there was no clarinet player in Kiss\, he permanently relocated his musical endeavors to the bass guitar\, which eventually lead to the stand-up bass. He leads various bands: from the effervescent “Trio Convulsant”\, to the angular-pop/rock of “Madlove”. He’s a co-founding member of the confounding “Mr. Bungle”\, and has been seen many times around the globe with the various ensembles of Mr. John Zorn. Trevor has also been caught bowling with “The Melvins”. \nScott Amendola – was born in Englewood\, New Jersey. Studied at Berklee college of music\, and lives in the bay area. He composed a symphony called “Fade To Orange” which features Mr. Dunn\, and guitarist Nels cline (with whom he’s played music with since the mid 90’s\, and is a member of “The Nels Cline Singers” along with Trevor). As a sideman\, Amendola has performed and recorded with a vast\, stylistically varied roster of artists\, including Bill Frisell\, John Zorn\, Mike Patton\, Mondo Cane\, John Scofield\, Cibo Matto\, John Dieterich from Deerhoof\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Bruce Cockburn\, Madeleine Peyroux\, Joan Osborne\, Jacky Terrasson\, Shweta Jhaveri\, Phil Lesh\, Sex Mob\, Kelly Joe Phelps\, Larry Klein\, Carla Bozulich\, Wayne Horvitz\, Johnny Griffin\, Julian Priester\, Sonny Simmons\, Pat Martino\, Jim Campilongo\, Bobby Black\, Larry Goldings\, Paul McCandless\, Rebecca Pidgeon\, and the Joe Goode Dance Group. \ndoors at 7p | show at 8p \n21+ with valid ID \nThe Uptown is located just around the corner from the 19th Street BART Station and is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Active Music Series Presents: Shanna Sordahl\, The Lost Shapes\, Stevie Richards
DESCRIPTION:AMS PRESENTS \nSHANNA SORDAHL::::::::\nShanna Sordahl is a sound artist and composer based in Oakland\, CA. Using amplified cello with analog and digital electronics and installation art as her primary mediums\, Shanna’s work is a continual exploration of one’s relationship to both sound and physical spaces. She emphasizes timbral changes\, the resonant body of objects\, and the re-contextualization of sound through the use of unconventional playing techniques\, feedback\, and audience immersion. Shanna strives to create sonic and physical spaces that induce a focused state of awareness\, where one is encouraged to reflect on or reconsider their relationship to sound\, people\, spaces\, and ultimately\, ideas. \nHer current focuses include a fascination with blurring the lines between performance spaces and installation to emphasize the transformative potential of these events. Seeing intricate connections between the experience of music and day to day life\, Shanna cannot separate music from its social implications and lived realities. She views sound immersion and performance as methods for processing and re-contextualizing past experiences while simultaneously imagining and creating new possibilities for the future. \nWith an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College\, Shanna has studied composition with Laetitia Sonami\, Chris Brown\, James Fei\, and Matt Rogalsky. She has performed and worked with a variety of composers and artists including Alvin Lucier\, Trimpin\, Wrekmeister Harmonies\, and Sarah Davachi\, and with the choreography collectives Wax Poet(s) and Simpson/Stulberg Collaborations. Her work has been presented at the 2013 International SuperCollider Convention and in 2015 she was awarded the Paul Dresher Artist Residency. In addition to an upcoming album release of solo material\, her most active collaboration is as the duo SO AR with percussionist Robert Lopez.\nhttps://www.shannasordahl.net/ \nSTEVIE RICHARDS:::::::\nStevie Richards is a saxophonist and modular synth builder and\nperformer from Melbourne\, Australia. SUMMARY:Justin Ouellet: UPTOWN ALLSTARS 2.0
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 24 \n7pm \n$15 Advance | $20 At the Door \nJustin Ouellet: Uptown Allstars 2.0\, featuring music by Patrick Anseth and Aaron Germain\, with special guests Marlan Aldana and Kev Choice. \nA musical celebration featuring friends and colleagues on jazz standards\, arrangements\, and originals. Last year’s show was such a success that we decided to revisit the concept this year. Hence the 2.0 \nThis year expands the style and sounds of the show from the standard jazz literature to mostly originals by Patrick Anseth & Aaron Germain. Both musicians featured on this event often accompany others\, but here they’re the focus\, on the platform sharing their creativity and musicianship with the community. \nARTIST INFO \nDynamically\, Patrick Anseth’s ability to travel the guitar neck lyrically as well as his capacity to find colors and sounds through a chord progression are awe inspiring. His artistry is emotional\, expressive\, and melodious. Originally songs of black American slaves\, they are rooted in song\, dance and drumming of West Africa\, the experience of oppression of an uprooted people\, and the teachings of a transformative faith. They troubled the dominant narratives\, and their message and tradition continue to trouble unjust systems today. Composers and experimenters (like Sun Ra\, Charles Ives and Pauline Oliveros) troubled the musical establishment and its conventions as they envisioned radical new ways of making and listening to sound. Their traditions are a separate musical “voice” from African American spirituality and the two voices cannot merge into one. Instead\, they must converse. Listen to one another. Learn from one another. Discover harmony. Enjoy dissonance. SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesday presents Nick Culp
DESCRIPTION:Nick Culp (Nicholas Gordon Culp) is an American pianist in the jazz idiom. Nick was born in Los Angeles\, the son of Gordon\, a professional classical guitarist and cellist\, turned aerospace engineer; and Lynne\, an English public school teacher. Nick showed great interest and aptitude toward piano since his first lessons at age 4. \nIn his middle school years\, he started attending the shows of John Magruder the big band director\, a friend of his mother’s\, which ignited a passion in him for jazz. He started working with the band’s pianist Michael Rocke who introduced him to the music of Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. \nWhile traveling in Europe in his early twenties\, Nick discovered a new mentor in French pianist Bernard Maury\, who influenced his harmonic style\, and sent him on a path to take advantage of the rich musical academia Paris had to offer. There Nick obtained a degree at Ecole Normale de Musique\, under the wing of Szymanowski protege\, Michael Vladkowski\, from ’99 to 03. \nOn his visits to his sister Miranda (a jazz singer) in the Bay Area\, he once again started sitting in on jazz sessions where he rekindled his love of bop\, which prompted his move to the Bay in ’04. \nWitnessing a lack of support for local artists of the medium\, he established Gutbucket Records in September 2011\, a not-for-profit label designed to record what he calls a “uniform sound” of local talent\, and the music they love. He remains in Oakland\, California.

SUMMARY:D'PaJo String Trio accompanying Sullivan's Travels
DESCRIPTION:Two-Piece Tuesdays is happy to again present String Trio d’PaJo. This month they’ll be accompanying the classic film “Sullivan’s Travels”. \nd’PaJo is an eclectic ensemble that focuses on their mutual love and appreciation for a myriad of musical styles – gypsy jazz\, jazz standards\, great American songbook\, Latin\, and any other music that speaks to them. As a collective\, they have performed internationally on more than two continents and in a dozen countries\, in settings ranging from intimate house concerts to venues such as Yoshi’s\, Grace Cathedral and Davies Symphony Hall. Guitarist Patrick Anseth and Violinist Justin Ouellet have been active in both the California & New England music scenes and perform in groups such as the Nuvo Jazz Quartet\, ALQ Quartet\, and June & Man.\nBassist Joe Kyle Jr. has been active in the Bay Area for more than 20 years performing in countless bands such as the Americano Social Club\, Howle Divine ALQ Quartet and many many more.\nPatrick is the director of the Jazz Guitar program at OSA. Justin is the Co-Director of Chamber Music & Orchestral Studies at OSA. \nShannon Hubbell’s film selection this month is “Sullivan’s Travels”.\nSullivan’s Travels is a 1941 American comedy film written and directed by Preston Sturges. It is a satire about Hollywood’s top director of comedies\, played by Joel McCrea\, who longs to make a socially relevant drama\, but eventually learns that creating laughter is his greatest contribution to society. The film features one of Veronica Lake’s first leading roles. The title is a reference to Gulliver’s Travels\, the famous novel by satirist Jonathan Swift about another journey of self-discovery. \nSullivan’s Travels received mixed critical reception\, varying from the New York Times calling it “the most brilliant picture yet this year”\, praising Sturges’s mix of escapist fun with underlying significance\, and naming it as one of the ten best films of 1941 to The Hollywood Reporter claiming it lacked the “down to earth quality and sincerity which made [Sturges’s] other three pictures of 1941 – The Great McGinty\, The Lady Eve\, and Christmas in July – “a joy to behold”. \nOver time\, the film’s reputation has improved tremendously\, being described by media historian Hal Erickson as a “classic”\, “one of the finest movies about movies ever made” and a “masterpiece”.[3] In 1990\, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant.” \nNo Cover!

SUMMARY:REDTRADE\, 6 Speed Supernova\, Behrhart
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2015\, by life-long Bay Area local musicians\, Redtrade’s original sound is filled with mystery and authenticity. Their songs are inspired by the dark intensity of ’80s new wave rock mixed with the under- tones of current alternative music. Redtrade’s hybrid stylistic approach is created by four members with a unique yet united spirit. \n6 Speed Supernova is a four-piece San Francisco based rock band whose sound is infused with blues\, funk\, jazz\, rock\, EDM and alternative influences. Guitarist David Ballon hails from a 20 plus year career in the music scene playing with numerous acts including LA’s gypsy-rock group Madame Hooligan. David’s sister Marie Gutierrez\, who has fronted both cover and original local NorCal bands over the last decade\, sings lead for 6SS. Puerto Rico raised Joan Torres is a bassist/composer on the forefront of progressive jazz. Drummer Brittany Patterson is currently obtaining her degree in Jazz from San Francisco State University and has played with a number of local jazz and punk bands over the last few years. It is said that music in the soul can be heard by the universe. 6 Speed Supernova’s galactic compositions will expand your mind\, tug on your heart and throw you tumbling into the cosmos. \nBehrhart formed in San Francisco in 2017 and released their debut album “Feral Ghost” in 2018 featuring expressive tracks “The Forest” and “Black Halo” as well as the explosive “Flirting with the Devil”. SUMMARY:Active Music Series: Apartment D\, Madalyn Merkey\, Arkin / Glenn Duo
DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series presents:\n– Apartment D\n– Madalyn Merkey\n– Jon Arkin & Jordan Glenn \nApartment D is an electro-improv duo that explores sound and space by combining live electronic processing and experimental performance of voice and pipa during improvisation. Ingibjörg Friðriksdóttir (https://www.ingibjorgf.com/) brings a background of both experimental electronic music and vocal training from Iceland. Sophia Shen (http://www.shensiyang.com/) combines her traditional Chinese pipa playing techniques with her new approaches to the instrument. The unique soundscape and the emotional depth that the duo creates are a result of an exchange and convergence from two very contrasting musical backgrounds and cultures. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/ingibj-rg-fri-riksd-ttir/improvisation\nhttps://soundcloud.com/ingibj-rg-fri-riksd-ttir/hymn \nMadalyn Merkey creates sound events with simple sonic material—voice\, sine waves\, and pulses—to generate lush synthetic environments with the aid of acoustic readings from microphones and sensors. She has performed solo computer music compositions at Yale Union\, Issue Project Room\, and Block Cinema\, and designed sound installations for Robert Irwin’s Central Garden at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Merkey is the English translator of the Italian music text Due scuole di musica elettronica in Italia (Die Schachtel\, 2016)\, written by composer Enore Zaffiri and published in Milan originally by Silva Editore in 1968. Recordings of her work Scent (2012) and Valley Girl (2014) are available on New Images Ltd. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/cyndi \nJon Arkin & Jordan Glenn are drummers who are known for making sounds that are outside of the main sequence of percussive timbres. With the element of AI recklessly infused via Arkin’s dangerously-sentient artificial neural networks\, the duo’s mixture of composition and improvisation carries the risk of usurpation by chance operations beyond their (or anyone’s) control. \nJordan Glenn – drums\nJon Arkin – drums & processing \nhttp://jordanglennmusic.com\nhttp://www.jonarkin.net

SUMMARY:Breathless (1960) | Paul Griffiths & Meredith Edgar
DESCRIPTION:Two-Piece Tuesdays Presents: Breathless | Paul Griffiths & Meredith Edgar \nTuesday\, May 9 \n7pm \nCome and join us for a great night of French new wave film and the sweet music of Paul Griffiths & Meredith Edgar — Americana\, folk\, and jazz. \nNo cover. \nFacebook RSVP \nFilm ~ Breathless (1960)\n“There was before Breathless\, and there was after Breathless. Jean-Luc Godard burst onto the film scene in 1960 with this jazzy\, free-form\, and sexy homage to the American film genres that inspired him as a writer for Cahiers du cinéma. With its lack of polish\, surplus of attitude\, anything-goes crime narrative\, and effervescent young stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg\, Breathless helped launch the French New Wave and ensured that cinema would never be the same.” – Criterion Collection\nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of Lewtonbus.net \nMusic ~ Paul Griffiths & Meredith Edgar\nPaul Griffiths is a singer/songwriter known and widely admired for such timeless classics as “Headless Body in a Topless Bar.” Meredith Edgar plies the same trade\, writing and performing her songs about bittersweet love\, drowning\, mistakes\, the ocean\, and the dark underbelly of relationships”.\nwww.paulgriffithsmusic.com \nMeredith Edgar is a San Francisco Bay Area native\, recently returned from a five-year stay in Austin\, Texas. Meredith’s songs are melancholy and melodic\, and combine her loves of folk\, jazz\, and Americana.\nhttps://www.meredithedgar.com/ \nPaul and Meredith are going to be joined this evening by Sean Silverman on upright bass and Charlie Hancock on accordion. \nStay After for the Active Music Series

SUMMARY:Active Music Series: Runcible Spoon Fight\, Rempis-Johnston-Ochs\, G. Shariatzadeh
DESCRIPTION:Runcible Spoon Fight \nTom Djll and Clarke Robinson\, electronics\, Josh Marshall\, saxophones\, Bill Wiatroski\, video projections \nRuncible Spoon Fight came together at the insistence of Thomas Pynchon’s literary agent\, who encouraged them to form\, thus ensuring a rich supply of “a sudden chorus of whoops and yibbles” for your event\, whether it be a bar mitzvah\, battleship launch\, or ritual suicide via V2 rocket. The duo says their sound is “about beats… but on our terms\,” meaning\, presumably\, something different from the norm (there is never a drum machine employed in the music). In fact\, expect beaten-metal clouds of mercury syringe-drops\, squeezed into popcycles of sub-prime numbers only\, with peanut-prawn curry icing. \nhttp://runciblespoonfight.com/ \nhttps://soundcloud.com/runcible-spoon-fight/live-in-a-room-excerpt \nDave Rempis – Darren Johnston – Larry Ochs Trio \nDave Rempis\, Alto Saxophone / Darren Johnston\, Trumpet / Larry Ochs\, Tenor and Sopranino Saxophones \nThis free-improvising trio came together in the fall of 2011\, when Rempis journeyed to the West Coast to discover some things about his compatriots on the Bay Area improvising scene. Trumpeter Johnston\, a frequent visitor to Chicago\, where the two had collaborated in several different settings in the years prior\, suggested this trio lineup for a performance at Oakland’s Uptown Nightclub. Although Rempis hadn’t worked with Ochs before\, the latter’s renowned experience in the all-horn lineup of The ROVA Saxophone Quartet made the idea especially appealing. From the first few notes\, that initial meeting flowed comfortably\, yet in totally unexpected ways\, with all three making logical structural decisions that gave their improvisations the feel of through-composed pieces. \nEager to continue developing this language that the three later came to dub “invisible architecture\,” Rempis made a follow-up trip to the Bay Area in the spring of 2012 for two more concerts and a studio recording session. Spectral\, the first document of their work\, was the result of that visit\, and shows an improvising trio playing out an audible game of chess. Not satisfied with simply existing in the moment\, these three combine sensibilities to look many moves ahead\, setting each other up time and again to capitalize on structural possibilities that give rare and meaningful form to an otherwise very spontaneous music. Their second CD\, a digital-only release\, is a live tour-de-force recorded in Buffalo on tour in 2013. You can hear (and even buy!) this CD\, Neutral Nation\, right here: aerophonicrecords.bandcamp.com \nhttp://www.ochs.cc/groups/rempis-johnston-ochs.html \nhttps://aerophonicrecords.bandcamp.com/album/spectral \nShariatzdeh/Cohen Duo \nGolnaz Shariatzadeh – violin \nAlex Chohen – guitar
