SUMMARY:The Y Axes\, The Trims\, Honey Cutt
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 17\n9pm \nThe Y Axes – theyaxes.bandcamp.com\nThe Trims – thetrims.bandcamp.com\nHoney Cutt – honeycuttband.bandcamp.com \nThe Y Axes are a San Francisco-based indie outfit who play a unique blend of dreamy\, synth-glossed pop and rhythmically muscular rock. They create energetic and hard-hitting pop with intricate instrumentations and ethereal vocal melodies that can stick in your mind for weeks. Their latest album\, Umbra\, was produced by Aaron Hellam (Finish Ticket\, Rin Tin Tiger\, Black Map\, etc.) at Hellam Sound and released November 26. \n“The Trims are an Indie/Dance/Post-Punk band from San Jose. They have a sound reminiscent of early U2 and some ’80s – ’90s Britpop. The Trims were recently featured on MTV’s The Real World. \nHoney Cutt (fka Baby!) is a dreamy guitar pop trio from Boston. “Lead single ‘If I’m Sorry’ sounds at once apathetic and driven with its respective heavy\, humid reverb and background guitar solos. Lyrically\, too\, “If I’m Sorry” poses that hypothetical—a conditional of remorse or regret—that’s not entirely swayed toward either determination.” – Paste \n21+ | wheelchair accessible\n$8 Advance | $10 At the Door

SUMMARY:Overland\, Radiokeys\, Dear County\, Northerner
DESCRIPTION:Overland\nA constant force at music venues and festivals through energetic bouts of electric aggression and emotion furiously flung without much care of consequence\, this four-piece alternative heavy rock band has built a solid following.Radiokeys\nSibling songwriters Stewart Patrick and Emily Helena Gude come together to form the band RADIOKEYS\, a musical entity that flirts with traditional sounds\, yet creates a unique\, jagged form of the blues and folk. They have grown from a two-piece to a four-piece band\, now including bay area musicians Allante Piazza on drums and Thomas Davis on bass.Dear County\nMark W. Lynn and Arrica Rose met when they were kids in punk bands\, then met again many moons later for the sake of love and country. Dear County began as just the two of them with some acoustic tunes\, but has now grown to include a full band line-up with Michael Smartt (drums) and Steve Boyd (bass\, backing vocals). \nNortherner\nThe group consists of the 3 remaining members of the Bay Area indie rock band\, Wave Array. Guitarist\, Nich Pak\, and bassist\, Johan Alfsen\, had been playing in and out of Bay Area bands together for over 10 years before forming the simple\, stripped down rock sound that is Northerner. Along their musical journey they met Ruben Rios\, an in-the-pocket\, heavy hitting\, and creative drummer who has also been a long standing memeber of the Bay Area music scene. With a strong natural chemistry\, the 3 found thenmselves writing simple catchy songs with an expressive\, hard hitting and deep emotional melody. \n21+ with valid ID

SUMMARY:Nelson\, Apropos Trio: Renzi-Mezzacappa-Levis\, & Trouble Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series Presents \nNelson\, Apropos Trio: Renzi-Mezzacappa-Levis\, & Trouble Ensemble \n  \nTrouble Ensemble::::: \nRent Romus\, Joshua Marshall\, saxophones\nJakob Pek\, guitar\nTim DeCillis\, vibraphone\nAndrew Jamieson\, keyboard\nChris Lauf\, drums\nErnest Larkins\, voice \nThe spirituals illuminate the spiritual force that troubles the waters of injustice and oppression using the power of African and African American music and spirituality. Originally songs of black American slaves\, they are rooted in song\, dance and drumming of West Africa\, the experience of oppression of an uprooted people\, and the teachings of a transformative faith. They troubled the dominant narratives\, and their message and tradition continue to trouble unjust systems today. Composers and experimenters (like Sun Ra\, Charles Ives and Pauline Oliveros) troubled the musical establishment and its conventions as they envisioned radical new ways of making and listening to sound. Their traditions are a separate musical “voice” from African American spirituality and the two voices cannot merge into one. Instead\, they must converse. Listen to one another. Learn from one another. Discover harmony. Enjoy dissonance. Each with our own distinct voices\, we create\, listen to\, revere and question\, the melody\, rhythm and text derived from spirituals\, and other songs they inspired\, we revel in our own ways of enjoying\, discovering and making\ntrouble. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMsgh6JRjuI\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fopSGLUFX7Q \nApropos Trio: Renzi-Mezzacappa-Levis::::: \nMatt Renzi – clarinet\, oboe\, tenor sax\nLisa Mezzacappa – acoustic bass\nJason Levis – drums \nhttps://apropostrio.bandcamp.com/ \nJoel Nelson/Amplified Glass::::: \nOriginally from the Birmingham\, Alabama area\, Joel Nelson moved to Oakland\, California in 2016. SUMMARY:Near Dark Presents: Trisomie 21\, Houses of Heaven\, Riki
DESCRIPTION:Near Dark Presents: \nTrisomie 21 \nHouses of Heaven \nRiki \nTickets \nFacebook RSVP \nTRISOME 21 \n\nTrisomie 21 is a post punk band formed in 1981 by Phillipe Lomprez (vocals\, drums) and Hervé Lomprez (guitar\, electronics)\, two brothers from Abscon\, in the North of France. They began composing songs at the age of 16 while studying at school. The brothers were influenced by Kraftwerk\, The Residents\, Yello\, P.I.L as well as the films of George A. Romero. Their music consists of lush soundscapes that do not easily fit into any one category. Lyrics are sung in English because in the north of France the duo sought to contradict the trend at the time for everything to be sung in French. Musically their mood is melancholic and one can hear traces of Joy Division\, Durutti Column and The Cure. Since 1983 they’ve recorded 11 albums and appeared on numerous compilations and remain active to this day. \nHOUSES OF HEAVEN \n \nHouses of Heaven are a post-punk/shoegaze band from the Bay Area. Remnant\, their inceptive EP\, is a bleak\, dub-influenced production\, mixing elements of electronic music\, Krautrock\, and psychedelia\, with nods to the the extreme sonic treatments of Adrian Sherwood. Produced by Monte Vallier (Wax Idols\, Weekend)\, Remnant blends shifting textures of drum machines\, live percussion\, ambient guitar\, vintage delays and custom engineered effects. \nRIKI \n \nRiki is a synth pop band from Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:D'PaJo String Trio accompanying Sullivan's Travels
DESCRIPTION:Two-Piece Tuesdays is happy to again present String Trio d’PaJo. This month they’ll be accompanying the classic film “Sullivan’s Travels”. \nd’PaJo is an eclectic ensemble that focuses on their mutual love and appreciation for a myriad of musical styles – gypsy jazz\, jazz standards\, great American songbook\, Latin\, and any other music that speaks to them. As a collective\, they have performed internationally on more than two continents and in a dozen countries\, in settings ranging from intimate house concerts to venues such as Yoshi’s\, Grace Cathedral and Davies Symphony Hall. Guitarist Patrick Anseth and Violinist Justin Ouellet have been active in both the California & New England music scenes and perform in groups such as the Nuvo Jazz Quartet\, ALQ Quartet\, and June & Man.\nBassist Joe Kyle Jr. has been active in the Bay Area for more than 20 years performing in countless bands such as the Americano Social Club\, Howle Divine ALQ Quartet and many many more.\nPatrick is the director of the Jazz Guitar program at OSA. Justin is the Co-Director of Chamber Music & Orchestral Studies at OSA. \nShannon Hubbell’s film selection this month is “Sullivan’s Travels”.\nSullivan’s Travels is a 1941 American comedy film written and directed by Preston Sturges. It is a satire about Hollywood’s top director of comedies\, played by Joel McCrea\, who longs to make a socially relevant drama\, but eventually learns that creating laughter is his greatest contribution to society. The film features one of Veronica Lake’s first leading roles. The title is a reference to Gulliver’s Travels\, the famous novel by satirist Jonathan Swift about another journey of self-discovery. \nSullivan’s Travels received mixed critical reception\, varying from the New York Times calling it “the most brilliant picture yet this year”\, praising Sturges’s mix of escapist fun with underlying significance\, and naming it as one of the ten best films of 1941 to The Hollywood Reporter claiming it lacked the “down to earth quality and sincerity which made [Sturges’s] other three pictures of 1941 – The Great McGinty\, The Lady Eve\, and Christmas in July – “a joy to behold”. \nOver time\, the film’s reputation has improved tremendously\, being described by media historian Hal Erickson as a “classic”\, “one of the finest movies about movies ever made” and a “masterpiece”.[3] In 1990\, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant.” \nNo Cover!

SUMMARY:REDTRADE\, 6 Speed Supernova\, Behrhart
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2015\, by life-long Bay Area local musicians\, Redtrade’s original sound is filled with mystery and authenticity. Their songs are inspired by the dark intensity of ’80s new wave rock mixed with the under- tones of current alternative music. Redtrade’s hybrid stylistic approach is created by four members with a unique yet united spirit. \n6 Speed Supernova is a four-piece San Francisco based rock band whose sound is infused with blues\, funk\, jazz\, rock\, EDM and alternative influences. Guitarist David Ballon hails from a 20 plus year career in the music scene playing with numerous acts including LA’s gypsy-rock group Madame Hooligan. David’s sister Marie Gutierrez\, who has fronted both cover and original local NorCal bands over the last decade\, sings lead for 6SS. Puerto Rico raised Joan Torres is a bassist/composer on the forefront of progressive jazz. Most notably\, a number of Joan’s original music with his All Is Fused project was recently nominated in the 16th Annual Independent Music Awards. Drummer Brittany Patterson is currently obtaining her degree in Jazz from San Francisco State University and has played with a number of local jazz and punk bands over the last few years. It is said that music in the soul can be heard by the universe. 6 Speed Supernova’s galactic compositions will expand your mind\, tug on your heart and throw you tumbling into the cosmos. \nBehrhart formed in San Francisco in 2017 and released their debut album “Feral Ghost” in 2018 featuring expressive tracks “The Forest” and “Black Halo” as well as the explosive “Flirting with the Devil”. Behrhart provides audiences an enlivening and dynamic experience \n$8 in advance | $10 at the door \n21+

SUMMARY:Jacob Aranda\, The Muddy Roses\, Bourbon Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 9\n9PM \nJacob Aranda – https://jacobaranda.bandcamp.com\nThe Muddy Roses – https://www.themuddyroses.com\nBourbon Therapy – https://www.bourbontherapy.com/music \n$8 Advance | $10 At the Door \nJacob Aranda studied at The Chicago School of Violinmaking and then traveled to Siguenza\, Spain in 2007 to study with iconic classical guitar maker Jose Luis Romanillos\, regarded as one of the greatest luthiers of the twentieth century. As a craftsman and luthier\, Jacob uses only hand tools\, avoiding factory-made practices typical of mass-market instruments. He started performing regularly\, both solo and as an accompanist (pedal steel\, mandolin\, banjo\, fiddle\, harmonica\, guitar)\, after moving to the Bay area in 2013. \nThe Muddy Roses are a New-old country\, hippie tonk Americana band from San Francisco. \nBourbon Therapy is a San Francisco-based indie rock band fronted by the husband and wife duo\, Aaron and Rebecca Skiles. Their style of upbeat music combined with downtrodden lyrics is reminiscent of the mid-90’s Counting Crows or Soul Asylum combined with the modern The Head and The Heart or Silver Sun Pickups. By mixing big guitars with piano\, strings and even an occasional harmonica\, their sound ranges from heavy riff-laden songs to expressive ballads\, providing a dynamic range of anthemic tunes. \n21+ | wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:The Purple Ones Halloween Crystal Ball - Batman Edition
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 26\n9pm \nThe Purple Ones – Insatiable Tribute to Prince (Batman Edition)\n+ DJ Spooky Calavera \n$20 Advance\n$25 Doors \nCash prize for best costume so dress to impress. \nThe Uptown\n1928 Telegraph Avenue\nOakland\n21+ \nTickets \nFacebook RSVP \nOakland California’s The Purple Ones treat the music and patented vibe of Prince with the utmost respect\, capturing the essence of what it was like to see Prince live. The musical dexterity of The Purple Ones – with 11 pieces on stage including a full horn section – completely turns the concept of a Prince tribute band on its head\, delivering Prince’s material live onstage in a way that has to be experienced to be believed. \nThe Purple Ones is a labor of love that was born in 2012 when Bay Area based bandleader and founder\, Morty Okin (“The New Morty Show”\, co-founder of the Michael Jackson tribute “Foreverland” and Neil Diamond tribute “Super Diamond”\,) decided to focus all of his energy on building the greatest Prince tribute on the planet. \nRecently\, Brown Mark and Matt “Doctor” Fink from The Revolution performed with TPO onstage and is not uncommon for the band to be joined on stage by “Honorary Purple Ones” like celebrity “Super Fan\,” comedienne Margaret Cho and members of the artist’s extended musical family\, including renowned percussionist (and brother of Sheila E\,) Juan Escovedo who toured the world with Prince in the ’80s. \nThe Purple Ones’ Musical Director is Prince’s former Musical Director\, bassist/guitarist and co-founder of Prince’s “New Power Generation\,” Levi Seacer Jr. Levi was with Prince for many years and is the only Prince band member to have played multiple instruments. Later\, collaborating with Prince as a songwriter and Co-Producer on his projects. Now the lead guitarist and Musical Director of The Purple Ones\, Seacer is determined to continue the musical legacy of his late friend and former band mate. He says one of the biggest keys to the authenticity is the ‘controlled chaos” that existed in Prince’s world that allowed for extreme creativity. “With Prince\,” Levi says\, “you tried everything. That’s the biggest thing I learned from him over all those years. If it doesn’t work you can always take it out\, but if it does work…there’s no limit.”

Our performances will surround the idea of what colors our performers have found within that gray or what colors draw them out of the gray… \nCheck out the highlight video from our last show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOAG0-T1_eA \nAND\, once again\, performers and audience members alike\, have a chance to boogie by staying for Uptown’s Hella Gay Dance Party after the show! \n$10 Advance | $15 At the Door \nTICKETS
