SUMMARY:CANCELLED -- Defining the Avant-Garde
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 10 \nDefining the Avant-Garde \nSung Kim creates a new genre with Stop Motion animation & improvisation on hand made instruments. An improvisor\, sculptor\, and an instrument builder\, Kim studied ceramic sculpture at the Corcoran School of Art. It was there that Kim started building his own variations of the guitar. While attending The Art Institute of Chicago he began to deviate from the guitar to explore other techniques\, tonalities\, and sympathetic resonance. Now a long time Bay Area resident\, Kim has collaborated with many local musicians to explore his instruments in an improvisational context. \nZachary James Watkins’ composition ‘Peace Be Till’ commissioned by Kronos Quartet debuted in January at Carnegie Hall. Zachary has also received commissions from Cornish College of The Arts\, The Microscores Project\, the Beam Foundation\, Somnubutone Radio Series free103point9.org\, sfsound and the Seattle Chamber Players. His band Black Spirituals opened for pionering Drone Metal band Earth during their 2015 European tour. \nJohn Shiurba is a composer and guitarist whose musical pursuits include improvisation\, art-rock\, modern composition and noise. Shiurba has recorded and toured as a member of the bands Eskimo\, The Molecules\, Spezza Rotto\, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company\, Anthony Braxton’s ensemble and the SFSound Group. Cadence Magazine calls Shiurba a ‘wildly creative guitarist… anti-jazz\, anti-everything else\, yet utterly compelling.\nHe will be playing with trumpet player Tom Djll (Grosse Abfahrt\, hackMIDI\, BEAUTY SCHOOL\, TENDER BUTTONS)\nand percussionist Gino Robair (founding member of the Splatter Trio and Pink Mountain\, performed w/Tom Waits\, Anthony Braxton\, John Zorn\, Nina Hagen\, Terry Riley\, Lou Harrison\, John Butcher\, Derek Bailey\, Peter Kowald\, Otomo Yoshihide\, and the ROVA Saxophone Quartet). \nMusic begins at 9:30pm\n$10\n21+

SUMMARY:New York Night Train's Soul Clap and Dance-Off! A Burger Boogaloo After-Party with Jonathan Toubin\, Baby Shakes\, and The World
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 30 \nNew York Night Train’s Soul Clap and Dance Off!\nA Burger Boogaloo After-Party with \nDJ JONATHAN TOUBIN\nBABY SHAKES\nTHE WORLD \nMidnight Dance Contest! Come wiggle your hips and take home that $100 Prize! \nSpecial guest selector and dance judge panel include Brontez Purnell (The Younger Lovers)\, Erin Emslie (Hunx and His Punx)\, B-Side Brujas\, Mario Hernandez (Kids On A Crime Spree)\, Poindexter (KALX)\, and Tod-o-phonic (WFMU)! \nJONATHAN TOUBIN  \nJonathan Toubin has become a popular touring DJ from New York without playing any contemporary genre. And without playing the hits. He instead made his name relentlessly experimenting with new ways to spin original exquisite 1950s and 1960s rock and soul 45s in nightclubs\, colleges\, and festivals everywhere. His Soul Clap and Dance-Off isn’t only one of the 21st Century’s most notable wingdings\, but also the world’s most popular and prolific soul party. And his Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down is the New York’s longest-running and most popular rock’n’roll dance. \nOf his many firsts\, he’s the first DJ to have an entire night devoted to his own dance party at Lincoln Center and also the first DJ to have an entire official night at Austin’s South By Southwest (five out of the last six years)\, the first 45 DJ at Bonnaroo Festival (twice)\, the first 45 DJ at All Tomorrow’s Parties (five times)\, the first 45 DJ with mix tapes on Burger Records (two)\, and the first living DJ with compilations on the legendary Norton Records (four). \nBABYSHAKES  \nBabyshakes are a rock ‘n’ roll / punk band from New York City. With catchy melodic vocals over dirty guitars and a killer rhythm section\, their influences range from The Ramones\, Slade\, Chuck Berry\, and ’60s Motown girl groups. Formed in 2005\, they’ve released 4 singles\, a 10” heart-shaped EP\, a singles collection\, and 3 LPs. They’ve toured the US\, Japan\, China\, Ireland\, and the UK. Baby Shakes have shared the stage with The Romantics\, The Boys\, Shadows of Knight\, The Undertones\, Barracudas\, Protex\, Black Lips\, Paul Collin’s Beat\, among others. \nTHE WORLD  \nThe World are five people from Oakland\, California who write rambunctious dance music with a post punk tool kit and an insightful yet short attention span. They sound like the future erupting out of all your favourite DIY punk 7″s simultaneously. There’s the infectious momentum of Essential Logic driving things ever forward\, the arty minimalism of Lilliput underscoring the band’s lyrical subject matter. Whilst the instinctual songwriting of Swell Maps pervades alongside the manic humour and inclusiveness of Splodge. The World use all these lightning rods as jumping on points to hurtle us all into a new dimension very much of their own making. This upsurge of energy and vision has now been skillfully captured on the band’s debut LP “First World Record\,” is out on Upset The Rhythm. \nDoors 9PM | Show 10PM \n21+ \n$10 \nFacebook RSVP \n

SUMMARY:Kingston Rudieska\, Coburaya\, and The TownGhost
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 26\nDoors 8PM | Show 8:30\n$10\n\nKingston Rudieska – Seoul’s #1 Ska Band\n\n\nCoburaya – Oakland’s Japanese Punk Rock Cover band\n\n\n+ The Townghost\n\n\nAlthough South Korea is about as far from Jamaica as a country could be\, that hasn’t prevented authentic Jamaican music\, namely ska and reggae\, from reaching her shores. Korea’s first traditional ska band\, Kingston Rudieska\, has been paying respect to the roots since they began in 2004. The nine- piece band blends bluebeat ska\, jazz\, reggae\, dub\, and nyahbinghi chanting into a final product that is uniquely Korean; something the band has dubbed “Feast Ska.” Their shows mix foot-stomping instrumentals – fronted by a four-piece horn section – with warm\, soulful vocal features sung by “Sugar” Seok Yul Lee. Their performances are punctuated with a jammy\, improv vibe as many of the members are trained jazz musicians. The music pays enormous respect to\, ska pioneers\, The Skatalites. It’s not uncommon\, during a set\, to hear an impromptu Skatalites cover kick off an improvisational jam to the delight of the crowd.\nOver the past decade\, they’ve come a long way from playing dingy basement clubs to appearing on some of the nation’s biggest stages\, fostering a love of Jamaican rhythms to a nation still newly discovering the genre. They’ve appeared at nearly all of Korea’s major music festivals\, including Jisan Valley Rock Festival\, Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival\, Busan Rock Festival\, Seoul Jazz Festival\, Rainbow Island Music Festival\, and Grand Mint Festival. Additionally\, Kingston Rudieska has appeared on numerous televised music programs in Korea. \n21+ / wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Pete RG\, The Lamps\, Billie Gayle\, Forest Bees
DESCRIPTION:First Fridays are always FREE at The Uptown. \nThe bar opens for happy hour at 5PM\, show starts at 9PM. \n21+ \nPete RG:\nBio:\n“Speckled with hints of Neil Diamond\, Leonard Cohen and Matt Berninger\, RG is blessed to have a voice so unique\, so enchanting and so captivating. It is that voice and its intrinsic charisma that will carry RG forward in the months and years to come.” – Absolute Punk \n“The warmth of a troubadour brought up on the traveling spirit songs of The Boss\, and other canonical idols brings about a spark that rests in a kind of a warm subtle glow with a brightness to entrance the glass windows of a lantern.”\n-Impose Magazine \nPete RG’s rich baritone voice is at the center of his distinct sound\, one that has reached fruition on his debut full-length\, Tender Souls\, released on September 23rd. To accompany the announcement\, RG shares the earnest title track. \n“As a songwriter\, I’m always trying to express myself as best I can\, lyrically and musically\,” RG says. “On Tender Souls I feel I was able to do that without cutting corners or falling back into ambiguity. It’s a really good picture of where I’m at\, with a lot of experience under my belt but also a lot of optimism.” \nBorn in Los Angeles to Greek immigrants\, Pete RG (nee\, Peter Argyropoulos) grew up in a musical household. As working musicians\, his parents inspired him to learn a variety of instruments and start playing band gigs while in college. Beginning in 1998 and up into 2007\, he was the principal songwriter and lead singer with the popular indie band\, Last December. \nDuring that time he also laid the foundation for his solo career\, with years of live shows that most recently included a 50+ show 2016-17 US tour with Candlebox. In its review of one club date\, Pancakes And Whiskey pretty much summarized all that RG offers to his audiences: “high quality rock with honest and engaging lyrics\, a hammering backbeat plus gorgeous harmonies.” \nLive Performance Video:\nhttps://vimeo.com/225680510 \nLinks:\nhttps://www.pete-rg.com/\nhttps://twitter.com/rg_pete\nhttps://www.facebook.com/PeteRGmusic\nhttps://soundcloud.com/pete-rg\nhttps://www.instagram.com/rg_pete/ \nThe Lamps:\nBio: Too many cooks in the kitchen\, or the ideal concoction for creating perfect audio alchemy? San Francisco indie rock trio The Lamps decidedly prove it’s the latter! Formed in 2016 after getting to know one another as service industry coworkers\, band members Joe Krahling (drums) and Harrison Laver (guitar/vocals) began their post-work musical collaboration and formed the basis for the band\, later snagging bassist Drew Dowling to round out their burgeoning sound. \nThe threesome immediately felt a musical camaraderie based on their similar tastes\, but also challenged and\nstretched one another with their corresponding differences\nin genre preferences and background influences. The\nguys soon found themselves effortlessly mixing these various musical roots. “We’ve been able to combine\nour different musical tendencies together in a unique way that produces natural\, all-organic\, jams\,” adds bassist Dowling. \nGuitarist/vocalist Laver further explains\, “What I love most about the band is the ease in which we present ideas to one another and give each other feedback. I never feel uncomfortable bringing a new song\, sound or concept to the\ntable. That fluidity of musical communication is priceless.”\nAs a result\, The Lamps have created their own straightforward take on Indie rock\, expertly weaving in elements of Jazz\, Surf Rock\, Blues\, Punk and Garage Rock. The band’s sound and style is comparable to popular Indie rockers like The Strokes\, Real Estate and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The Lamps have been steadily gaining a local SF Bay Area following and regularly play to enthusiastic crowds at Brick & Mortar Music Hall\, Stork Club and Neck of the Woods\, among other concert venues. The band’s debut four-track EP is due out Spring 2018.\nLinks:\nhttps://thelamps.bandcamp.com/album/white-kite-ep \nBillie Gayle:\nbilliegayle.com\nfacebook.com/billiegaylemusic \nBillie Gayle began as the solo\, singer-songwriter project of Beth Garber in Seattle\, whose guitar-picking style and lyric-heavy songs are reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake\, and whose lilting vocals bring Doris Day\, Francoise Hardy\, and Ilene Woods to mind. \nAs Billie Gayle has developed into a band\, with a relocation to the East Bay and the addition of Adam and Justin Wayne on guitar and drums\, and Eric Shawn on bass\, influences like Slowdive\, David Bazan\, and St. Vincent have shaped Billie Gayle’s sound into a tapestry of melody\, shiny guitar riffs\, and backbeat\, while staying true to the original\, story-driven style. \nBlending the grit and glamour of the Bay and the contemplative\, rainy day rock of the emerald NW\, Billie Gayle intertwines roots of singer-songwriter folk\, leading lady vocals\, shimmery guitar riffs\, and a densely melodic drive. \nForest Bees:\nhttps://forestbees.bandcamp.com/releases \nForest Bees is what happens when you take the daughter of Indian immigrants; feed her on a steady diet of Bollywood\, Suicide and shoegaze; strand her as one of the few women of color in a sea of white indie boys playing guitar; drop her into the warm lap of motherhood; write her off as ‘boring and domestic’; fire her up to reform her band which only inspired her to start something new. And that leads us to these songs about identity + fluidity + the mindfuck of realizing that who you are is not always who you are allowed to be. Songs about growing up never seeing anyone who looks like you on tv or in magazines (Off Color); the loneliness of marriage (Independence Day); post-partum depression (Hollow Bones); inarticulate longing (Golden Dream); and the ultimate revenge fantasy of being about to turn your back and walk away from it all (Dust). \nFacebook RSVP
