SUMMARY:New York Night Train's Soul Clap & Dance-Off with Jonathan Toubin\, Baus\, Th' Losin Streaks\, and more!
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 26 \n8:45 PM \nNew York Night Train & Soul Clap Dance-Off! \nA fun soul dance night with a cash prize midnight dance contest! \nwith \nDJ JONATHAN TOUBIN\nBAUS\nTH’ LOSIN STREAKS \n+ DJ MARTHA QUEEN and ABRILITA (B-SIDE BRUJAS) \nand guest DJ dance-off music selector RUSSELL QUAN \nwith special guest selector RUSSELL QUAN and a fantastic dance contest panel of judges that includes TIGER LILY (KALX)\, SONNY SMITH (SONNY & THE SUNSETS)\, ABRILITA (B-Side Brujas)\, DJ MARTHA QUEEN\, and DARLA DOWNING (The Mystical Sister)!!! \nCome wiggle your hips and take home that $100 midnight dance contest winner’s prize! \n  \n \nJONATHAN TOUBIN spins raw\, wild\, rare\, and uncommon original 7-inch vinyl by unsung artists of the ’50s and ’60s on the beat of today’s dance floor. When Village Voice awarded him as Best DJ in their 60th anniversary Best of New York City publication\, they wrote\, “Since 2007\, Toubin’s Soul Clap and Dance-Off has brought throwback pizzazz and retro cool to New York’s late-night underground. Culled from an endless array of long-forgotten ’60s soul singles\, Soul Clap is pure musical dynamite\, the kind of party that exposes today’s iTunes-bred\, press-play DJs for their relative lack of roots and ingenuity. No fist-bumps or atomic bass drops here; instead\, Toubin lovingly crafts sets that bring lost chestnuts from the likes of Vernon Harrell and the Blendells into clearer focus for a new generation of dance enthusiasts. You can try to put your moves to better use\, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find more cathartic\, sweatier fun elsewhere in the city.” \n \nBAUS is a no-wave\, funky post-punk trio from Oakland. In Razorcake\, Camyle Reynolds wrote\, “A foundation of bass bounces in and out of step with funk-influenced drums is layered atop of odd and anxious post-punk guitar. The melodies of bass and guitar wander different paths\, cross\, join\, rip apart\, and bounce along. Mike’s shrill and uneasy vocals add to their unconventional charm\, punctuated by some pretty rad shrieks from Sierra. It’s not too often that you find a band that sounds this unique.” \n \nTH’ LOSIN STREAKS are Sacramento’s lovable ‘60s garage punk ruffians. Their new LP “This Band Will Self-Destruct In T-Minus” is out now on Slovenly. It’s their first album in 14 years! \nABRILITA (B-Side Brujas) and DJ MARTHA QUEEN spin soul grooves and more. They are both kicking off the night behind the turntables and are also taking part in the midnight dance-off as judges! Wow! \nRUSSELL QUAN is a Bay Area treasure. He has been a crucial member of countless rad bands over the years\, including The Mummies\, The Bobbyteens\, The Flakes\, The Tight Fits\, The Dukes Of Hamburg\, and many more. Russell will be the guest DJ selector spinning records during the midnight dance-off. \nPanel of Dance-Off judges includes: Abrilita (B-Side Brujas)\, DJ Martha Queen\, Tiger Lily (KALX / Jet Lag Rock N Roll)\, Sonny Smith (Sonny and the Sunets)\, Darla Downing (The Mystical Sister)\, and more! \n

SUMMARY:New York Night Train's Soul Clap and Dance-Off! A Burger Boogaloo After-Party with Jonathan Toubin\, Baby Shakes\, and The World
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 30 \nNew York Night Train’s Soul Clap and Dance Off!\nA Burger Boogaloo After-Party with \nDJ JONATHAN TOUBIN\nBABY SHAKES\nTHE WORLD \nMidnight Dance Contest! Come wiggle your hips and take home that $100 Prize! \nSpecial guest selector and dance judge panel include Brontez Purnell (The Younger Lovers)\, Erin Emslie (Hunx and His Punx)\, B-Side Brujas\, Mario Hernandez (Kids On A Crime Spree)\, Poindexter (KALX)\, and Tod-o-phonic (WFMU)! \nJONATHAN TOUBIN  \nJonathan Toubin has become a popular touring DJ from New York without playing any contemporary genre. And without playing the hits. He instead made his name relentlessly experimenting with new ways to spin original exquisite 1950s and 1960s rock and soul 45s in nightclubs\, colleges\, and festivals everywhere. His Soul Clap and Dance-Off isn’t only one of the 21st Century’s most notable wingdings\, but also the world’s most popular and prolific soul party. And his Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down is the New York’s longest-running and most popular rock’n’roll dance. \nOf his many firsts\, he’s the first DJ to have an entire night devoted to his own dance party at Lincoln Center and also the first DJ to have an entire official night at Austin’s South By Southwest (five out of the last six years)\, the first 45 DJ at Bonnaroo Festival (twice)\, the first 45 DJ at All Tomorrow’s Parties (five times)\, the first 45 DJ with mix tapes on Burger Records (two)\, and the first living DJ with compilations on the legendary Norton Records (four). \nBABYSHAKES  \nBabyshakes are a rock ‘n’ roll / punk band from New York City. With catchy melodic vocals over dirty guitars and a killer rhythm section\, their influences range from The Ramones\, Slade\, Chuck Berry\, and ’60s Motown girl groups. Formed in 2005\, they’ve released 4 singles\, a 10” heart-shaped EP\, a singles collection\, and 3 LPs. They’ve toured the US\, Japan\, China\, Ireland\, and the UK. Baby Shakes have shared the stage with The Romantics\, The Boys\, Shadows of Knight\, The Undertones\, Barracudas\, Protex\, Black Lips\, Paul Collin’s Beat\, among others. \nTHE WORLD  \nThe World are five people from Oakland\, California who write rambunctious dance music with a post punk tool kit and an insightful yet short attention span. They sound like the future erupting out of all your favourite DIY punk 7″s simultaneously. There’s the infectious momentum of Essential Logic driving things ever forward\, the arty minimalism of Lilliput underscoring the band’s lyrical subject matter. Whilst the instinctual songwriting of Swell Maps pervades alongside the manic humour and inclusiveness of Splodge. The World use all these lightning rods as jumping on points to hurtle us all into a new dimension very much of their own making. This upsurge of energy and vision has now been skillfully captured on the band’s debut LP “First World Record\,” is out on Upset The Rhythm. \nDoors 9PM | Show 10PM \n21+ \n$10 \nFacebook RSVP \n

(One of A Kind) is a triple threat: vocalist\, musician\, and producer. The freshman of the Bay Area collective the Honor Roll\, he has various productions for the entire crew. “Doin’ My Thang”\, the funky Baltimore house inspired jump off for Honor Roll first lady Josie Stingray and featuring Ms. Jack Davey (of J*Davey) was his first noted production. This was quickly followed by production for rising stars Mike Baker the Bike Maker (“The Chase” & “Espionage”) and Trackademicks (“Life Is What You Make It”). His vocals are featured on recent albums from Too Short and Teedra Moses. \n1-O.A.K.’s musical grooming began in church\, where he learned to play drums\, keys by ear\, and sang in the choir. Every other Saturday morning\, he and his mom cleaned the house\, listening to nothing but Stevie Wonder albums. They kept this routine for 6 years. It was his first introduction to timeless music. This also made him a fan of Donny Hathaway\, Luther\, Michael\, the Hawkins family\, and Darryl Coley\, all singers who he trained his voice to emulate. \nDJ Sets \nDJ Red Corvette \nMksmth \nAzure \n  \n21+ \n

SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays presents Blood & Dust
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another Two Piece Tuesday night of great live local music. Free. Music starts at 8pm. \n21+ and wheelchair accessible\, RSVP and invite friends on Facebook! \nDouglas Allen of Blood & Dust\nWith a voice that’s one part whiskey and two parts honey\, Blood & Dust blurs the lines between folk\, blues\, and soul. Born the son of a farmer and hailing from Southern Oklahoma\, this ex-Baptist preacher takes every raw emotion you know and channels it into the strings of his guitar. Coming onto the Bay Area Music Scene in early 2012\, Blood & Dust is most recognizable for gritty melodies and intensely emotive guitar playing; it’s like having the barrel of a six shooter pointed straight at your chest. Listen at your own risk.\n“Blood & Dust loves to be slow and steady; great for contemplation\, you could have a an emotional reckoning about your regrets in life as he slows the pace down to one fit for a Mississippi wrap around porch. However\, he can also shred that guitar with some down country\, high energy twang\, and a deep bluesy feel that says “eat your heart out ladies…” – Awaken Cafe\nhttp://douglasallenmusic.com/

SUMMARY:Marshall House Project\, Major Powers & The Lo-Fi Symphony\, Ultra Cinco
DESCRIPTION:Get your funk on with 3 of the Bay Area’s hottest acts: Marshall House Project (Santa Rosa)\, Major Powers & The Lo-Fi Symphony (Richmond) and Ultra Cinco from San Francisco! \n8pm\, $10\, 21+ \nMarshall House Project is a driving soul-funk outfit with one foot rooted in the deep pockets of the past and the other fearlessly exploring the deep fry of the future. The sound is an electric eclectic love-child: the product of an affair between Jimi Hendrix and the Funky Meters\, after a long night of drinking with space aliens\, and jamming to Bob on the jukebox. The power quartet delivers a mash-up of energetic funk and slinky soul with a psychedelic twist and a chili salt rim. The mission: to create an uplifting dance experience\, spun full of twists and turns\, interlaced with conscious reflective lyrics\, expanding\, contracting and alive like a universe unto itself. \nMajor Powers & The Lo-Fi Symphony \n \nULTRA CINCO is a San Francisco based quintet that plays tight\, original arrangements on bass\, drums\, guitar\, saxophone and trumpet.  It’s a combination of funk\, soul\, afrofunk\, groove and jazz\, with improvised solos and guest vocalists.
