SUMMARY:The Surfaris\, The Greasy Gills
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 12\nDoors 8pm \nThe single-most famous surf tune of all time is “Wipe Out” by the Surfaris. With its wicked laugh\, cutting lead guitar\, and drum solos\, the song spent four months on the Billboard charts. Along with “Surfer Joe” and “Point Panic” The Surfaris solidified themselves as the leaders of surf music in the mid ’60s. \nThe Surfaris were close friends and contemporaries of the late great Dick Dale\, regarded as the pioneer of the surf guitar. Dick Dale had performed sold out shows at The Uptown on eight separate occasions. He had become a friend to us all\, and we miss him dearly. So in memory of Dick\, The Uptown presents The Surfaris for one night only. Join us in welcoming this genre defining band to Oakland for the first time. \nAlso performing will be Oakland’s reverb-drenched instrumental surf trio\, The Greasy Gills. They self-released their debut cassette\, Bodega Boys\, in 2018. And this August\, Hi-Tide Recordings released The Spring Collection EP\, The Greasy Gills’ 4-track 7″ record. \n21+ / wheelchair accessible \nThe Uptown\n1928 Telegraph Avenue\, Oakland\none block from 19th street BART station \nTHE SURFARIS \nTHE GREASY GILLS \n

SUMMARY:Free First Friday: The Odd Numbers\, Flexx Bronco\, RnR Adventure Kids\, Harriot\, + KALX DJs Jesse Luscious & Annabelle
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, December 7\n9pm \nFirst Fridays are Free! For the past decade The Uptown has presented a Free First Friday showcase of mostly local artists we believe deserve your attention. This month features: \nThe Odd Numbers\nFlexx Bronco\nRock and Roll Adventure Kids\nHarriot \n+ KALX DJs Jesse Luscious & Annabelle \nFacebook RSVP \nTHE ODD NUMBERS:\nThe Odd Numbers are a Mod Rock Band that gained notoriety in the ’90s playing festivals in Sweden and abroad. They were in the center of a musical movement of Bay Area bands like Diatribe\, The Faction and Diesel Queens. In other circles\, they are know for much of their music being used on Skateboard videos. More recently\, The Odd Numbers have recorded a new album which has received recognition as their best album to date. \nFLEXX BRONCO\nFlexx Bronco’s influences draw from just about every genre. Flexx Bronco spans a variety of styles\, ranging from country to rock\, blues to pop and alternative. They have played over three hundred shows in the last several years\, sharing the stage with such acts such as the Supersuckers\, Agent Orange\, The Bronx\, Throw Rag\, The Black Halos\, Tesla\, Sammy Hagar\, and Death by Stereo. \nROCK AND ROLL ADVENTURE KIDS\nVoted as San Francisco’s Best New Punk Band by SF Weekly over a decade ago\, Rock and Roll Adventure Kids are a two-piece outfit from Berkeley\, California. As a guitar/drums tune slinging get-up\, these two brothers stripped down the Rn’R to reveal a skeleton of raw and psychotic backwoods aria that smashes into all the right pieces. With righteously delivered howling harmonies\, backwoods drum bang-ups\, and guitar that drags the soul right through the dumper\, the R’n’R Adventure Kids are poised to rock your socks off. \nHARRIOT\nHarriot is an all-girl band from the Bay Area. They make dark\, danceable goth surf rock that’s both subdued and enraged. Their sound is indebted to a long tradition of girl-driven punk\, indie\, and rock ‘n roll bands\, from the Go-Go’s to the Gossip to the Pixies\, with stopovers in folk (for ethereal harmonies) and stoner rock (for sludgy riffs). \nKALX DJ Jesse Luscious will be spinning records 5-9pm\, so come early!\nKALX DJ Annabelle will be spinning records 9pm-close\, so stay late! \nThe Uptown opens for Happy Hour at 5pm. First band goes on promptly at 9pm. \n21+\nWheelchair Accessible\nNo Cover

SUMMARY:Guitar Legend DICK DALE\, The Hot Toddies
DESCRIPTION:Guitar legend DICK DALE returns to The Uptown Nightclub! \nGET TICKETS! \nSaturday\, October 14 \nDick Dale \nThe Hot Toddies \nDoors 8PM | Show 9PM | 21+ \nDick Dale \nLegendary instrumental guitarist and musical innovator Dick Dale pushed the limits in terms of both technical stylings of guitar playing and of electric amplification technology\, helping to develop new equipment that was capable of producing the thick\, clearly defined tones he sought\, at the previously undreamed-of volumes his playing demanded. He experimented with reverberation and utilized custom-made Fender amplifiers\, including the first-ever 100-watt amp. He is credited with introducing the use of reverb and his staccato picking technique became his trademark. \nInfluenced in part by the jungle drum rhythms of jazz great Gene Krupa\, Dick Dale created his own genre of music in 1955\, and is widely considered one of rock and pop music’s most technically gifted musicians. His innovative style has influenced countless artists spanning from the 1950s until today; including Jimi Hendrix\, Eddie Van Halen\, The Beach Boys\, The Ventures\, Jeff Beck\, The Cramps\, and La Luz. \nDick Dale was the first rock guitarist to appear on the Ed Sullivan show in 1963\, the same year  he became the first rock guitarist to be featured in a double page layout in Life Magazine. His music has appeared in numerous films\, including Pulp Fiction\, Escape From LA\, Space Jam\, Barbed Wire\, American Vampire\, and Jesus’s Son\, to name a few. \nDale’s style and how he wanted his guitar to sound pushed the industry to make new and better equipment which we now take for granted. Dale kept blowing up amps until Leo Fender went to one of his shows and realized what Dale had been asking for. As a result\, a special 85-watt output transformer was made that peaked at 100 watts. This in turn necessitated a speaker that could handle that power without blowing up from the thick sound coming out of Dale’s guitar. Leo went with Dale to the James B. Lansing loudspeaker company. What came out of that meeting was the 15″ JBL D130F loudspeaker. Dale thus broke through the electronic barriers of his time and could play the music as he wanted it to sound. \nFender still makes a signature guitar for Dale called the Dick Dale Custom Shop Stratocaster\, which is fitted with “Custom Shop ’54” pickups. And Dale continues to play with his original unit dating from the early 1960’s. He also continues to string his left-handed guitar upside down. \nWatch Dick Dale’s Misirlou \nDick Dale Website \nRolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists \n  \nThe Hot Toddies \nThe Hot Toddies\, an all-girl band from Oakland\, CA mix sunny beach pop\, indie rock riffs and a dry sense of humor. Heidi\, Erin and Sylvia are best friends who have been playing music\, drinking whiskey and writing songs together since 2005. They’ve toured across the US\, Canada and the UK in support of their 2 albums “Smell the Mitten” and “Get Your Heart On” out on Asian Man Records. Their latest EP “Bottoms Up” was released on Tricycle Records in Feb 2013. \nWatch The Hot Toddies’ Jaguar Love \nThe Hot Toddies Bandcamp \nThe Hot Toddies Facebook \n  \nTickets are limited! \n
