SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays: Harold & Maude\, Paul Griffiths & The Scofflaws\, Michael McNevin
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for Two Piece Tuesdays as we present the extraordinary film\, Harold and Maude\, with music by Paul Griffiths and the Scofflaws and Michael Mcnevin. It’s free and fun. Hosted by Ginger Murray. \nHarold and Maude ~ With the idiosyncratic 1971 American fable Harold and Maude\, countercultural director Hal Ashby fashioned what would become the cult classic of its era. Equal parts gallows humor and romantic innocence\, Harold and Maude dissolves the line between darkness and light along with the ones that separate people by class\, gender\, and age\, and it features indelible performances and a remarkable soundtrack by Cat Stevens.\nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of http://lewtonbus.net/. \n\nPaul Griffiths and the Scofflaw(s) ~ Paul Griffiths is a San Francisco based songwriter/performer\, “…known and widely admired for such timeless classics as ‘Headless Body in a Topless Bar’…”\nHailing from Manchester England\, Paul regularly performs around the SF Bay Area and beyond in various configurations; solo duo\, trio and full band.\nPaul recently played a very successful show at SF’s premier venue\, The Great American Music Hall.\nGriffiths is joined by bassist Sean Silverman. \nhttps://www.paulgriffithsmusic.com/

SUMMARY:Breathless (1960) | Paul Griffiths & Meredith Edgar
DESCRIPTION:Two-Piece Tuesdays Presents: Breathless | Paul Griffiths & Meredith Edgar \nTuesday\, May 9 \n7pm \nCome and join us for a great night of French new wave film and the sweet music of Paul Griffiths & Meredith Edgar — Americana\, folk\, and jazz. \nNo cover. \nFacebook RSVP \nFilm ~ Breathless (1960)\n“There was before Breathless\, and there was after Breathless. Jean-Luc Godard burst onto the film scene in 1960 with this jazzy\, free-form\, and sexy homage to the American film genres that inspired him as a writer for Cahiers du cinéma. With its lack of polish\, surplus of attitude\, anything-goes crime narrative\, and effervescent young stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg\, Breathless helped launch the French New Wave and ensured that cinema would never be the same.” – Criterion Collection\nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of Lewtonbus.net \nMusic ~ Paul Griffiths & Meredith Edgar\nPaul Griffiths is a singer/songwriter known and widely admired for such timeless classics as “Headless Body in a Topless Bar.” Meredith Edgar plies the same trade\, writing and performing her songs about bittersweet love\, drowning\, mistakes\, the ocean\, and the dark underbelly of relationships”.\nwww.paulgriffithsmusic.com \nMeredith Edgar is a San Francisco Bay Area native\, recently returned from a five-year stay in Austin\, Texas. SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays:The Kim Lembo Project & Gina Villalobos
DESCRIPTION:Two Piece Tuesdays is proud to present the wonderful music of Gina Villalobos & Kim Lembo as well as the film My Darling Clementine. \nMusic ~ Gina Villalobos & Kim Lembo \nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of www.lewtonbus.net\nMy Darling Clementine is a 1946 American Western film directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp during the period leading up to the gunfight at the OK Corral.\nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of the www.lewtonbus.net \nGINA VILLALOBOS\nKnown for holding her heart up in all its vulnerable lucidity\, her lines & melodies scrape away the layers of denial that get us through the everyday. Like the realist short stories of Raymond Carver\, her songs are visceral anthems in which one senses the bottom has fallen out\, making visible the seriousness of what’s at stake\, the songs affirm that possibility has always existed…and in fact still exists. \nVillalobos became one of the most acclaimed new artists in the alternative country community with her breakthrough album\, 2005’s Rock N Roll Pony when legendary BBC disc jockey Bob Harris called it “a contender for album of the year.” Her follow-up release\, Miles Away\, increased her profile and cemented the album as “timeless and combines every element that makes a recording a classic…” (Paste Magazine).\nVillalobos’ fourth solo album\, Days on Their Side\, reveals “a new depth with the slightest shift in light…taking the Lucinda Williams/Sheryl Crow model to a new level.” -(American Songwriter magazine). Her most recent offering\, Sola was described as “confident & instantly addictive.” (Mojo Magazine) \nIn late 2015\, Villalobos wrote and produced music for the Golden Globe Award– and Emmy Award–winning Amazon Studios TV show Transparent. The derivative work of the 1971 Sly and the Family Stone hit “Family Affair” featured the vocals of Ruby Friedman and was used in the trailer promoting the launch of the show’s second season. \nVillalobos is nothing if not dead serious. Her music is deeply rooted in time\, place\, and history. She’s the real thing: an artist\, someone who can show you where you are.\nwww.ginavillalobos.com/ \nKIM LEMBO\nKim Lembo is a Bay Area Musician with 30 years in the music business. In the 90’s and early 2000’s\, she was signed with indie label\, Blue Wave Records as well as French label\, Sky Ranch Records\, a subsidy of Virgin Records. With 4 releases under her belt\, she left the label’s and set off for the Bay Area to take a short hiatus from the business. The short hiatus turned into 15 well lived years.\nIn 2015 she came back strong with her self-released 5th album\, “45 Miles”\, an intimate portrait of her life in relationships and love. A slight departure from the blues/rock she had been doing\, “45 Miles” is more country blues and roots than rock/blues but as always\, features her soulful sound.\nCurrently\, Lembo can be found playing throughout the Bay Area and Pacific Northwest either solo or with her band “The Kim Lembo Project”\, a collection of rotating bay area musicians bringing everything from rocking guitar to middle eastern oud. The sound is raw\, original and retro. This in addition to producing events focusing on featuring women with her songwriting series and podcast\, Grab Em By The Songs.\nWhether with her full band or\, solo Lembo brings blues\, with an edgy soulfulness combined with poetic lyrics and storytelling. Her voice is big and echoes a kind of Etta James meets Lucinda Williams if they played in a band with Janis Joplin. It is the sound of music you cannot define by a singular genre. She sings from her soul with songs written from the heart.\nLembo has played all over the US and has recorded in France\, California\, and NY. From the stages of Paris to hiking up the side of the Great Wall of China with a guitar and a slightly broken foot\, she has brought her uniquely deep and powerful voice to thousands throughout the world. Lembo has a voice to be reckoned with and a story to be shared.\nKim Lembo can be found in the Bay Area California rabble rousing and playing/producing events.\nShe is originally from Syracuse\, New York.\nhttp://kimlembomusic.com/ \nStay after for the Active Music Series.

SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays Presents Lee Vilensky Trio
DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday evening The Uptown NIghtclub hosts Two Piece Tuesdays; a free live music showcase in our front room. This week\, Two Piece Tuesdays brings you San Francisco’s Lee Vilensky Trio. \n“MY FAVORITE SONGS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INSTRUMENTALS\, ESPECIALLY WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY IMAGES\, FILM SCORES IN PARTICULAR….MUSIC THAT EVOKES A SCENE\, SOUND AS A PRELUDE TO ACTION AND MOVEMENT. \nI WANTED TO ASSEMBLE A BAND THAT PLAYED ALL INSTRUMENTALS SO THAT GROOVE AND FEEL\, MELODY AND HARMONY\, COULD BE FULLY ENJOYED\, UNENCUMBERED BY LYRICS. FORMED IN 2000 FROM THE REMAINS OF THE SWINGIN’ JOHNSONS\, WE DECIDED TO SWITCH THE FORMAT TO ALL INSTRUMENTALS DUE TO THE UNPREDICTABLE BEHAVIOR AND GENERAL UNSAVORY APPEARANCE\, HYGIENE AND HABITS OF MOST VOCALISTS. WHAT STARTED AS A SIDE BAND FOR WELL TRAVELED BAY AREA SIDEMEN\, HAS EVOLVED INTO ONE OF SF’s MOST POPULAR INSTRUMENTAL GROUPS AND THE PROGENITORS OF THE GENRE\, “SPY/SOUL”. SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays presents Andrew Levin
DESCRIPTION:Another Tuesday Night of Free Live Music!\nThis week with guitarist Andrew Levin. \n“There is truly ‘more than meets the eye’ with this cat\, as he is funny\, humble and genuine… Yet has this multilayered depth when it comes to writing\, singing and producing music (And of course while playing his guitar)… With so many amazing artists evoked\, Andrew has truly forged his own sound here.”- Uriah Duffy\, Bassist/Musical Director (Cee Lo Green\, Whitesnake\, Prince) \nAndrew Levin is Ubiquitous. Starting his career as one of the go-to guitarists and in the San Francisco Bay Area\, Andrew has performed and recorded across the globe with the likes of Terrance Martin\, Zion I\, The Hans Zimmer Team\, and countless others. But Andrew is far from just a guitar player. Over the past several years\, Andrew has created a unique sound as a producer\, singer\, and composer that is both experimental and accessible. His music draws on a diverse array of influences spanning from Radiohead to Stevie Wonder to J Dilla. To sum it up\, it’s a danceable\, singable\, day-dreamable\, and thought-provoking collage of textures and emotions rolled up into one easily digestible burrito of sound. SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays presents Blood & Dust
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another Two Piece Tuesday night of great live local music. Free. Music starts at 8pm. \n21+ and wheelchair accessible\, RSVP and invite friends on Facebook! \nDouglas Allen of Blood & Dust\nWith a voice that’s one part whiskey and two parts honey\, Blood & Dust blurs the lines between folk\, blues\, and soul. Born the son of a farmer and hailing from Southern Oklahoma\, this ex-Baptist preacher takes every raw emotion you know and channels it into the strings of his guitar. Coming onto the Bay Area Music Scene in early 2012\, Blood & Dust is most recognizable for gritty melodies and intensely emotive guitar playing; it’s like having the barrel of a six shooter pointed straight at your chest. Listen at your own risk.\n“Blood & Dust loves to be slow and steady; great for contemplation\, you could have a an emotional reckoning about your regrets in life as he slows the pace down to one fit for a Mississippi wrap around porch. However\, he can also shred that guitar with some down country\, high energy twang\, and a deep bluesy feel that says “eat your heart out ladies…” – Awaken Cafe\nhttp://douglasallenmusic.com/

SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays presents Ed Ivey & JL Stiles
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of the film the Red Turtle and the live stylings of Ed Ivey and JL Stiles. Free. \nFilm: The Red Turtle. \nA 2016 animated fantasy film co-written and directed by Dutch-British animator Michaël Dudok de Wit and produced by Toshio Suzuki from Japan. The film tells the story of a man who becomes shipwrecked on a deserted island and meets a giant red turtle. The film was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film for the 89th Academy Awards. \nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of www.lewtonbus.net \nEd Ivey & JL Stiles ~ Jazz & Awesome: 7 to 9pm. \nRagtime guitar\, harmonica and vocals. \nEd Ivey ~ is a Texas-born musician from a musical family in far West Texas. Ivey played in pioneer El Paso punk band Rhythm Pigs. Moving to San Francisco in the mid-Eighties\, Ivey and his band recorded five original albums and toured heavily in North America and Europe. When the band broke up\, Ivey worked in Texas as newspaper reporter until moving back to San Francisco in 1992. \nA Grammy nominee (2011)\, Ivey has been a standout in the San Francisco music scene for decades. He has been a lightning rod in the city’s music scene\, putting together new combinations of players and teaching New Orleans brass band tradition to school kids. He has played with noted Texas singer Gary Floyd\, ragtime man Dan Hicks\, bluesman JJ Malone\, surf-mariachi act Los Mex Pistols Del Norte\, eclectic uke band Old Puppy\, blues harp ace Jay Gaunt and many more. \nJL Stiles ~ is a unique animal who for the first time is merging two totally different fields of truth seeking: Ragtime blues and higher mathematics. Both of these disparate strands filtered through a lifetime on the run\, searching for a universal truth from psychedelic Brazilian forests to US college campuses and further into his own unique vision. JL Stiles has a mind that sees music in a similar way to how J.S. Bach saw music. However\, Bach never played the blues. \nAs for the blues: JL has opened for many a blues great\, including BB King\, Etta James and JJ Cale. Surprisingly\, looking at such a history\, most of his originals would not be considered blues or folkways yet Maybelle Carter\, Blind Blake and the rest of his honored forebears haunt everything he does\, including his upcoming song-of-the-ages album\, JL Stiles presents House of Murmurs\, on which producer Etienne de Rocher (Sean Hayes) plied his remarkable talents. It’s a bit confounding to box a one-off like JL\, so the artist decided to mostly reserve his stunning ragtime and blues guitar madness for his other band\, Hobo Paradise\, which tears the house down regularly in San Francisco. \nJL’s touring history includes a consistent presence on the West Coast and currently expanding to a nationwide audience via his latest release\, which has garnered national press and national radio play. \nhttp://www.jlstiles.com/

SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays: Gary Floyd & The Buddha Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Two Piece Tuesdays is a weekly event offering glorious live music and performance. Free. \nPresenting……..GARY FLOYD & THE BUDDHA BROTHERS \nBear-like\, incendiary frontman Gary Floyd first emerged in the public consciousness with Austin\, TX\, political punkers the Dicks. The group released fiery albums on SST and Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles labels before their dissolution in 1985. The Dicks had moved to San Francisco at one point\, but when they chose to return to Austin\, Gary Floyd stayed behind\, forming Sister Double Happiness with former Dicks drummer Lynn Perko in 1986. \nThe new group wallowed in furious\, blues-tinged hard rock fueled by Floyd’s dynamic belting ability. The band sparked enough interest to sign to major-label Reprise for 1991’s Heart & Mind. The group broke up in 1995\, however\, and Floyd moved on to form the Gary Floyd Band\, which released the album Broken Angels in 1995. Floyd released the solo effort\, Backdoor Preacher Man\, in 2000. Early in the new millennium\, Floyd hooked up with some Bay Area musicians to form Black Kali Ma (named after a Hindu goddess)\, a group which continued the punk/blues/hard rock spirit of Floyd’s past. Black Kali Ma released their debut\, You Ride the Pony I’ll Be the Bunny\, on Alternative Tentacles in 2000. \nhttps://garyfloydandthebuddhabrothers.bandcamp.com/album/buddha-light \nIMAGE ~ The image is not a current representation of the band but a from a Dicks performance with Gary Floyd. \nhttp://www.thestranger.com/events/22793630/the-dicks-gary-floyd-and-the-lucky-boys \nhttp://www.houstonpress.com/music/a-conversation-with-texas-punk-icon-gary-floyd-6755118
