SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays presents: Salem Thompson & Anju's Pale Blue Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Two Piece Tuesdays is a weekly event offering live local performance and cocktails. There is no cover and much magic. \nSalem Thompson ~ Salem is an accomplished performer from Oakland\, CA who plays guitars\, keyboards\, and writes and records his own music. Salem’s influences include Stone Temple Pilots\, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club\, Led Zeppelin\, Buddy Guy\, and Alter Bridge\, among many others. His taste for different styles of music has shown up not only in his recordings but in the types of bands he has participated in. These typically branch across alternative rock\, pop\, blues\, jazz\, punk\, and soul. \nAnju’s Pale Blue Eyes ~ A Pop/ Indy/ Folk group that coalesced in San Francisco in early 2011. Based around the confessional singer/ songwriter stylings of Nick Anju\, the group currently incorporates a classically trained cello backbone\, postpunk and r n’b guitar playing\, and the rhythmic pulse of Adirondack banjo. The songs are alternately orchestrated between disparate instruments or flowing into living\, breathing jams of dynamic and melodic feeling. With such various influences as socially aware acoustic folk\, indie rock\, shoegaze\, bluegrass\, classical harmony\, psychedelic\, and the occasional rockabilly flourish\, Anju’s Pale Blue Eyes draws from many styles and brings them together for a unique musical experience. There is no cover and much magic.  \nPIWAI & ZIMBOOAK MYSTICS  \nBuilding up to the upcoming release of her album\, Piwai has begun dishing out her catchy\, genre fusing melodies along with her mbira (thumb piano from Zimbabwe). This year she is backed up by blend of legendary & seasoned Oakland musicians. Fondly known as the girl with the African thumb piano (mbira instrument)\, Piwai has been wowing American\, and Zimbabwean audiences with her reverberating soulful voice\, interlaced with catchy\, genre fusing melodies and exotically mystifying sounds.  \nBorn and raised in Zimbabwe\, Piwai was exposed to the musical colors of multicultural Southern Africa and gospel influence. She joined the church choir at the age of 10 and wrote and performed her first song at age of 13 while in junior high school. At 19 Piwai left medical school in her native Zimbabwe to pursue a different program & became a biologist in the US. The pull for music proved far too great during her studies. As she puts it “Music is the sum total of my very existence and every action I make manifests in music—the rhythm of my life.” During & after her college years she trained as a jazz vocalist at the Jazz School of Berkeley\, with world renowned vocalists and instructors such as Vernon Bush\, Raz Kennedy\, Maye Cavallaro & Frankye Kelly. Piwai went under the tutelage of maestros & renowned percussionists\, Yagbe Onilu and conguero\, Butch Haynes. After a nirvana of sorts in 2008\, while driving across the US headed to California to “find herself”; Piwai found a new love for the mbira instrument that was to define her musical journey\, and with it came a burst of songwriting frenzy\, as well as her first of many mbira lessons from Cosmas Magaya\, one of Zimbabwe’s premiere mbira maestros. \nMore info at: http://piwaimusic.com/

Music from 8 to 10pm. \nPresenting………Alzara & Brother Spellbinder \nAlzara & Brother Spellbinder play well-crafted songs that might be defined as cabaret-folk rock with a dreamy\, old-world ache and a modern melodic edge.\nBrother Spellbinder veers off the beaten track with plaintive vocals\, unusual arrangements\, and a variety of textures. Incorporating elements of folk\, gypsy jazz and indie\, the music moves from rousing and infectious to dreamy and fragile. Lyrics flow from the uncensored mythical realm of the human psyche to the here and now of human experience. Brother Spellbinder aims to enchant in the age of disenchantment. \nThe daughter of Big Brother & The Holding Co.’s original drummer – Dave Getz – singer/songwriter Alzara Getz grew up in a rock-n-roll scene and learned early that music could move mountains. As a public health social worker her deep interest in how people heal – or not – is a source of inspiration for songwriting. After years of performing with a variety of bay area bands she decided it was time to lead her own. She formed Brother Spellbinder with roots guitarist Jamie Wilson in 2012. Wilson was an early graduate from San Francisco’s School of the Arts High School and counters Alzara’s dulcet voice with a dollop of gristle. Rice masters graduate Gabriel Beistline adds transcendent melodies and velvet bass tones on cello. Seasoned drummer Steve La Porta steers the songs with steady and intricate rhythms. We will also be celebrating supporting Hillary Clinton for President. No cover! \nOakland for Hillary: The organizers of the Oakland for Hillary will be at this event. They will be bringing buttons and pins and even\, a card board cut out of Hillary herself. Perhaps\, some balloons. If you want to volunteer\, they can tell you how. If you want to support\, they can tell you how. If you would just like to hang out with other people who support Hillary\, here is your chance.
