SUMMARY:She Wants Revenge\, The Guidance\, The Ink Bats
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 28th\nThe Uptown Nightclub proudly presents… \nShe Wants Revenge\nThe Guidance\nand\nThe Ink Bats (featuring live visuals by Unseelie and Misfailed)\nWith DJ Aaron Axelsen (alt 1053/popscene) \nShe Wants Revenge will play the band’s second LP “This is Forever” in its entirety \nJustin Warfield and Adam “Adam 12” Bravin formed the moody\, Joy Division-inspired She Wants Revenge in 2003. The group’s debut album “She Wants Revenge” was released in early 2006\, with three singles to follow (“These Things”\, a video featuring Shirley Manson from Garbage\, “Out of Control”\, and “Tear You Apart” for which the video was directed by Joaquin Phoenix). The band’s second album\, This Is Forever\, was released in 2007. It continues where their self-titled debut left off\, a figurative morning after to the dance of the night before. Still continuing on the same path of creating thought provoking and emotional dance music\, the album deals in the familiar themes of love\, loss\, and betrayal\, yet somehow even darker in tone\, with beats that bang even harder\, and if it’s possible\, even catchier songs… \nIn an effort to escape the monotony of electro pop\, Stefan Pruett began his solo project\, The Guidance. As The Guidance\, Stefan wants to craft a reflective approach to making electronic music that he has termed Future Grunge. This aural concoction is the convergence of electronic synth sounds\, driving beats\, and dance elements representing the aesthetic and energy of ’90s grunge\, but all sequenced digitally instead of live instrumentation. \nThe Ink Bats (featuring live visuals by Unseelie and Misfailed): post-punk/psych/goth-influenced band based in Oakland. Stereo Embers Magazine named them one of “The Fifteenth NEXT Twenty Current Post-Punk Bands You Should Know About” http://stereoembersmagazine.com/the-fifteenth-next-twenty…/… \nWith DJ Aaron Axelsen (alt 1053/popscene)\nhttps://alt1053.radio.com/hosts/aaron-axelsen\n—\n21+ with valid ID\nThe Uptown is located just around the corner from the 19th Street BART Station and is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:mssv (Mike Baggetta\, Mike Watt\, Stephen Hodges)
DESCRIPTION:Friday the 13th! \nPost-genre power trio mssv was formed early in 2019 when guitarist Mike Baggetta joined up with bassist Mike Watt (MINUTEMEN\, fIREHOSE\, The Stooges) and drummer Stephen Hodges (Mavis Staples\, Tom Waits\, David Lynch) to tour on his Wall of Flowers album (BIG EGO Records\, featuring Watt and drumming legend Jim Keltner). After a hugely successful US tour performing music that ran the gamut from original electro-free-jazz improvisations\, driving new-rock anthems and covers of The Stooges and more from Watt’s first punk rock opera “Contemplating the Engine Room”\, mssv has proved a fearless band.\nFeaturing live electronic processing by both Baggetta and Hodges\, as well as Watt’s relentlessly driving bass and vocals\, mssv has been able to not only show what it means to be a band in the modern post-genre landscape\, but is well on their way to defining it.\nmssv will release a new live album in December 1st on Striped Light Records and begin production on a new studio album that same month after this run of California-only preview shows.\n___\n“The chemistry is palpable\, the vibe is loose\, and the songs are all worlds unto themselves.” -Aquarium Drunkard \n“Mike Baggetta is a genre-blurring guitar hero…at the forefront of an army of guitar innovators”. -Brad Cohan\, JazzTimes \n“A true supergroup power trio\, ala a modern day Cream” -Guitar Moderne \n“Mike Baggetta makes stealthy\, mysterious music … he’s trying to do something personal with collective improvisation without ever getting in the way of beauty.” -Ben Ratliff\, New York Times \n“…a kind of post-Frisellian sonic explorer … with his wild whammy-bar articulations\, ambient looping and rippling arpeggios … full of subversive surprises\, hellacious skronking\, string-scraping and a general hornets’ nest of fuzz-toned dissonance” -Bill Milkowski\, DownBeat Magazine / Slate Magazine\n___\nopeners Henry Kaiser & Scott Amendola\nFor the past 40 years\, Bay Area-based radical guitarist\, ethnomusicologist and composer Henry Kaiser has been at the forefront of creative music. He has been nominated for a Grammy for his work with acclaimed director\, Werner Herzog and has conducted research as a scientific diver and videographer for the US Antarctic program. He has also been a pioneer in the realm of effects\, looping and extended techniques for the guitar. \nFor Scott Amendola\, the drum kit isn’t so much an instrument as a musical portal. Over a career spanning more than three decades\, Amendola has forged deep ties across the country\, and throughout the world. As an ambitious composer\, savvy bandleader\, electronics explorer\, first-call accompanist\, and capaciously creative foil for some of the world’s most inventive musicians\, Amendola applies his wide-ranging rhythmic virtuosity to a vast array of settings\n___\n21+ with valid ID\nThe Uptown is located just around the corner from the 19th Street BART station and is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Credit Electric (record release) • Dawn Riding • Harrison Basch
DESCRIPTION:Debut LP release show for Credit Electric\, joined by alternative folk band Dawn Riding and singer-songwriter Harrison Basch.\n\nCredit Electric – creditelectric.bandcamp.com\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nwith Dawn Riding – dawnriding.bandcamp.com \nand Harrison Basch – harrisonbasch.bandcamp.com \nCredit Electric is a gauzy Bay Area Americana slo-core group. This is the record release show for their eponymous debut LP. \nDawn Riding  is an alternative folk band from Oakland. Having cut their teeth in basements\, underground venues\, and punk houses around the country\, it only made sense for Dawn Riding’s debut LP to come to life in a dusty mid-fi recording studio run out of a San Francisco garage. The eight psych-tinged songs that came out of the Last Spring sessions unveil the stories of songwriter Sarah Rose Janko’s fabled friendships\, renegade icons\, and uncompromising ethos\, and serve as a perfect introduction to Dawn Riding’s dreamy\, gritty sound. It’s an album for loners & relentless romantics\, full of emotional casualties\, resilient heroes\, and living close to the edge. \nHarrison Basch is a folk singer-songwriter / multi-instrumentalist from Oakland. \n$10 \n21+ / wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:B Hamilton (record release show)\, Desiree Cannon\, Levi Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 22\n9pm \nFacebook RSVP\nTickets \nB. Hamilton – record release show.\nNothing and Nowhere LP will be out November 12th on Wolf and Knife records. \nWhat started as a bedroom project in 2010 for songwriter\, vocalist\, and guitarist Ryan Christopher Parks (whose collaborative track with Boots Riley “OYAHYTT” features heavily in Riley’s 2018 film “Sorry to Bother You.”) with the addition of Parks’ good friends Andrew Macy (Tall Grass) on bass\, and Raj Kumar Ojha on drums (Once and Future Band\, Shannon Shaw Band\, Howlin’ Rain)\, B. Hamilton has since become one of Oakland\, California’s staple Rock and Roll bands. With Parks’ moody\, atmospheric guitar riffs and lyrical ability to encapsulate entire characters and scenes within a few short minutes\, there is a decidedly driven\, cinematic feel to B. Hamilton’s sound. \nDesiree Cannon is an Oakland-based country-folk musician. Desiree pays tribute to the spirit of both the country and folk traditions\, crafting music that is as vulnerable as it is strong-willed and fierce – she sings with the raw truth of the country greats\, and the emotional depth of folk heroes. \nOakland dwelling musician Levi Thomas spent the first half of his twenties in his hometown of Springfield\, Missouri. Recorded in 2016 by Winston Goertz-Giffen at Santo Studio in Oakland\, Thomas’s debut album Billie draws from a lifetime of influences ranging from his Ozarks roots music upbringing to the cosmic troubadours of the early 70s\, with a nod to the down tempo neo-psychedelia of the early 90s.

SUMMARY:Caress • The Acharis • Deathlist • Fawning + DJ Fernando (KALX)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 14\n8pm \nCaress (Los Angeles) – caress.bandcamp.com\nThe Acharis – theacharis.bandcamp.com\nDeathlist (Portland) – deathlist.bandcamp.com\nFawning – graveface.bandcamp.com/album/too-late \nCARESS \nCaress is the synth / darkwave solo project of Los Angeles artist Tara Jane\, front person of noise pop / shoegaze band Blood Candy. Caress blends haunting melodies and cold breathy exhales that reign over echoed drum machines\, airy synths\, and reverb drenched guitar. Inspired by ’80s darkwave and modern synth pop\, Caress is known for her dark minimal arrangements. \nTHE ACHARIS \nThe Acharis is a distorted dreampop / post-punk duo from Oakland. In 2015 they were signed to indie label Exbtn in Paris\, France\, who released their first LP\, “Lost in the Vortex.” The band’s own take on recalling their teenage soundtracks honors a chaotic sonic dialogue between the two members; on one side lyrical ballad\, on the the other a brooding storm terminating in total annihilation. The Acharis have shared the stage with Cindy Lee\, Shivas\, La Luz\, The Americas\, Naomi Punk\, and more. \nDEATHLIST \nDeathlist is the solo recording project of former Summer Cannibals bassist Jenny Logan. Since 2016\, the prolific gothy post-punk musician has released four LPs and three EPs. The Portland Mercury calls her music “frenzied punk rock that riffs wildly until caught in a buzzy entanglement of guitar-driven chaos.” And Williamette Week raves\, “Deathlist is quickly becoming Portland’s most prolific\, carefully honed purveyor of post-punk.” \nFAWNING \nFawning is a new dreampop trio fronted by Cheyenne of Night School. Their music is equal parts serene and beautiful\, and at times borderline creepy. Cheyenne and Devin met many years ago\, and they originally formed Fawning as a recording project. In mid-2019 they added bassist Eddie and transitioned to a live band. Fawning cites Cocteau Twins\, Cranes\, and Julie Cruise as influences on their debut EP released by Graveface Records. \n  \nTickets \nFacebook RSVP

SUMMARY:Washed Up: Extra Marching Band\, Oinga Boinga\, Mala Grena
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 31 \nExtra Marching Band presents Washed Up with: \nExtra Marching Band \nOinga Boinga \nMala Greña \nExtra Action Marching Band \n“It’s hard to convincingly argue that a background in high school marching band competitions is actually cool. At least\, it’s hard with words\, but the Extra Action Marching Band\, a mobile San Francisco Bay Area institution of brass and drums\, routinely proves its potential for unparalleled hipness in those cumbersome instruments and weird helmets that so many awkward teenagers gravitate toward for a sense of belonging. The Extra Action Marching Band features flag spinning\, varying degrees of nudity\, and\, if a recent sighting can be believed\, fake body parts grotesquely affixed to exposed skin. Cabaret flair crossed with paradiddle glee and wheezing horns — it’s John Philip Sousa’s nightmare\, the stifled band geek’s dream\, and an ensemble format typically associated with militarism and authority twisted into the service of chaos.” — East Bay Express \nOinga Boinga\nhttps://www.facebook.com/the.oinga.boinga/\nDISCLAIMER: This band may unload awesomesauce all over your eyes and up in your ears. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.\nWe are an all-female Oingo Boingo cover band. (Notice we didn’t say “tribute”\, you sniveling little weasels!) \nMala Greña\nhttps://www.facebook.com/MalaGrenaBand/\nMala Greña’s music fuses the bailado\, rhythm and percussion of cumbia\, chicha\, zapateo\, salsa\, and other latinoamerican rhythms with the unconventional song structures\, timings and gritty guitar lines of progressive and experimental rock music.

There is no impersonator or look- a-like\, nor do they dress up in goofy costumes or wigs. \nThe Purple Ones bring audiences to their feet\, night after night\, by speaking Prince’s musical language. energy\, rhythm\, creativity and of course…a serious dose of unadulterated funk.\nThe Purple Ones tap into that soulful artistry like none other. \nThe Purple Ones is a labor of love that was born in 2012 when Bay Area based bandleader and founder\, Morty Okin (“The New Morty Show”\, co-founder of the Michael Jackson tribute “Foreverland” and Neil Diamond tribute “Super Diamond”\,)\ndecided to focus all of his energy on building the greatest Prince homage on the planet. \nThe Purple Ones have been selling out concert venues since their inception\, growing a fan base over the years that includes long time Prince devotees and newbies that are just discovering the icon. Recently\, Brown Mark and Matt “Doctor” Fink from The Revolution performed with TPO onstage and is not uncommon for the band to be joined on stage by “Honorary Purple Ones” like celebrity “Super Fan\,” comedienne Margaret Cho and members of the artist’s extended musical family\, including renowned percussionist (and brother of Sheila E\,) Juan Escovedo who toured the world with Prince in the 80’s. \nThe Purple Ones’ Musical Director is Prince’s former Musical Director\, bassist/guitarist and co-founder of Prince’s “New Power Generation\,” Levi Seacer Jr. Levi was with Prince for many years and is the only Prince band member to have played multiple instruments. \nLater\, collaborating with Prince as a songwriter and Co-Producer on his projects. Now the lead guitarist and Musical Director of The Purple Ones\, Seacer is determined to continue the musical legacy of his late friend and former band mate. He says one of the biggest keys to the authenticity is the ‘controlled chaos” that existed in Prince’s world that allowed for extreme creativity\, “With Prince\,” Levi says\, “you tried everything. That’s the biggest thing I learned from him over all those years. If it doesn’t work you can always take it out\, but if it does work…there’s no limit.”

SUMMARY:Trevor Dunn | Phillip Greenlief | Scott Amendola Trio
DESCRIPTION:Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds) | Trevor Dunn (contrabass) | Scott Amendola (drums/electronics/percussion) \nScott Amendola (drums\, electronics)\, Trevor Dunn (contrabass) and Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds) have a collective and individual history that spans three decades and many continents. They have recorded as acclaimed duo records and performed up and down the west coast as a trio. While the members have been active in pairs in numerous ensembles\, this is their first set of performances as a trio in nearly 20 years. Their approach to free improvisation is to explore the many genres of music they are known for\, which spans rock\, metal\, funk\, jazz\, post-classical and film music. Expect the level of excitement to be high – these musicians are ecstatic to be working together again as a unit and are ready to deliver that joy to their audiences. \nPhillip Greenlief – Since his emergence on the west coast in the late 1970s\, Evander Music founder and saxophonist Phillip Greenlief has achieved international critical acclaim for his recordings and performances with musicians and composers in the post-jazz continuum as well as new music innovators and virtuosic improvisers. He has performed and recorded with Wadada Leo Smith\, Meredith Monk\, Rashaun Mitchell and They Might Be Giants; albums include THAT OVERT DESIRE OF OBJECT with Joelle Leandre\, and ALL AT ONCE with FPR (Frank Gratkowski\, Jon Raskin\, PG). Now celebrating the release of LANTSKAP LOGIC with Fred Frith and Evelyn Davis on Clean Feed (2019). Recent residencies have included Headlands Center for the Arts and the Banff Center for the Arts. His critical writing has been published in Artforum\, SFMOMA’s OPEN SPACE\, and Signal to Noise. \nTrevor Dunn – hails from Eureka\, California. The son of a mother and father. At an early age Mr. Dunn found himself playing clarinet. Thank the lord he found the bass. Once he realized there was no clarinet player in Kiss\, he permanently relocated his musical endeavors to the bass guitar\, which eventually lead to the stand-up bass. He leads various bands: from the effervescent “Trio Convulsant”\, to the angular-pop/rock of “Madlove”. He’s a co-founding member of the confounding “Mr. Bungle”\, and has been seen many times around the globe with the various ensembles of Mr. John Zorn. Trevor has also been caught bowling with “The Melvins”. \nScott Amendola – was born in Englewood\, New Jersey. Studied at Berklee college of music\, and lives in the bay area. He composed a symphony called “Fade To Orange” which features Mr. Dunn\, and guitarist Nels cline (with whom he’s played music with since the mid 90’s\, and is a member of “The Nels Cline Singers” along with Trevor). As a sideman\, Amendola has performed and recorded with a vast\, stylistically varied roster of artists\, including Bill Frisell\, John Zorn\, Mike Patton\, Mondo Cane\, John Scofield\, Cibo Matto\, John Dieterich from Deerhoof\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Bruce Cockburn\, Madeleine Peyroux\, Joan Osborne\, Jacky Terrasson\, Shweta Jhaveri\, Phil Lesh\, Sex Mob\, Kelly Joe Phelps\, Larry Klein\, Carla Bozulich\, Wayne Horvitz\, Johnny Griffin\, Julian Priester\, Sonny Simmons\, Pat Martino\, Jim Campilongo\, Bobby Black\, Larry Goldings\, Paul McCandless\, Rebecca Pidgeon\, and the Joe Goode Dance Group. \ndoors at 7p | show at 8p \n21+ with valid ID \nThe Uptown is located just around the corner from the 19th Street BART Station and is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:The Surfaris\, The Greasy Gills
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 12\nDoors 8pm \nThe single-most famous surf tune of all time is “Wipe Out” by the Surfaris. With its wicked laugh\, cutting lead guitar\, and drum solos\, the song spent four months on the Billboard charts. Along with “Surfer Joe” and “Point Panic” The Surfaris solidified themselves as the leaders of surf music in the mid ’60s. \nThe Surfaris were close friends and contemporaries of the late great Dick Dale\, regarded as the pioneer of the surf guitar. Dick Dale had performed sold out shows at The Uptown on eight separate occasions. He had become a friend to us all\, and we miss him dearly. So in memory of Dick\, The Uptown presents The Surfaris for one night only. Join us in welcoming this genre defining band to Oakland for the first time. \nAlso performing will be Oakland’s reverb-drenched instrumental surf trio\, The Greasy Gills. They self-released their debut cassette\, Bodega Boys\, in 2018. And this August\, Hi-Tide Recordings released The Spring Collection EP\, The Greasy Gills’ 4-track 7″ record. \n21+ / wheelchair accessible \nThe Uptown\n1928 Telegraph Avenue\, Oakland\none block from 19th street BART station \nTHE SURFARIS \nTHE GREASY GILLS \n
