SUMMARY:Two-Piece Tuesdays Presents: Inner Ear Brigade & Faust
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for our monthly celebration of live music and film. This will be a special and wonderful experimental event with Inner Ear Brigade & Faust. No cover. \nFaust ~ 1994 film directed by Jan Švankmajer. It merges live-action footage with stop-motion footage\, puppetry and claymation. It borrows and blends elements from the story as told by Goethe and Christopher Marlowe with traditional folk renditions. It has a distinctly Modernist\, Absurdist\, Kafkaesque feel\, especially with the setting in Prague. The tone is dark but humorous.\nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbell of www.lewtonbus.net. \nInner Ear Brigade ~ IEB is an ensemble of musicians based in the San Francisco Bay Area who play a unique mix of progressive rock\, jazz\, and experimental pop\, all delivered through their originally detailed compositions and arrangements. The music is “fun\, happy\, accessible\, and proggy.” Steeped with a vintage analog sensibility\, effects processing\, and synthesizers\, IEB crafts their sounds from “ RIO elements (Rock In Opposition)\, Canterbury (Sound)\, and Zappa”.\nIEB is Bill Wolter (guitar and compositions)\, Ivor Holloway (sax)\, Andrew Jamieson (keyboards)\, Stephen Wright (bass)\, Alison Niedbalski (vocals) and Christopher Lauf (drums). \nStay after for the Active Music Series

SUMMARY:Spindrift\, The Spiral Electric\, Killer Kaya
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY FEB 10th – Music Box Presents: \nSPINDRIFT (Los Angeles – Spaghetti Western / Psychedelic)\nThe Spiral Electric (San Francisco – Heavy Psychedelic Rock)\nKiller Kaya (Psychedelic / funk) \nProjections by White Light Prism \nat The UPTOWN Nightclub\n1928 Telegraph Ave\, Oakland \nGet psychedelic spaghetti-western pioneers SPINDRIFT’s newly remixed and reissued LP “The West” on VINYL! They’re back on tour after a 6-month absence from the Bay Area to rock The Uptown’s stage again with acid-rock voyagers THE SPIRAL ELECTRIC\, who are riding a wave of Spotify love and recording a new LP w/ Steve Kille of Dead Meadow; and joined by Santa Barbara’s psychedelic psych-funk sensations KILLER KAYA\, who played last year’s Starry Nites Festival! \nSPINDRIFT\n(Los Angeles)\n“Spindrift: experimental\, epic\, cinematically inspired music more akin to the textured\, symphonic layers of Portishead than the chaps and 10-gallon hat–wearing Riders in the Sky….makes you feel like you’ve just been made love to by a handsome stranger\, a genius visceral experience.”\n– LA WEEKLY \n“[Spindrift makes] you feel like you’ve been granted access to the distant memories of a two-bit-saloon harlot as she watches her nameless lover ride off into the sunset.”\n– LA WEEKLY \n“Spindrift are living the American dream\, were it written by acid-popping UFO enthusiasts with a hard-on for John Wayne”\n– THE SALT LAKE CITY WEEKLY \nTHE SPIRAL ELECTRIC\n(San Francisco)\nThe Spiral Electric initially began in San Francisco as a psychedelic guitar duo consisting of Clay Andrews (vocals\, keyboards\, guitar) and Nicolas Percey (lead guitar)\, and has shifted through various lineups over the years\, venturing through acid rock with flavours of surf\, post-punk\, british goth and indie\, noise\, drone\, and stoner rock. Between 2012 and 2017\, they have gathered a dedicated international following and toured up and down the US west coast from Seattle to Los Angeles and played festivals like the Desert Stars Festival in Pioneertown CA\, Starry Nites Festival in Santa Barbara\, Gathering of the Tribes Festival in San Francisco\, CA\, and the Portland Psych Fest in Portland\, OR. They have recorded two EPs at Skylab Studio in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree with producer Tommy Dietrick– “Upon Your Shore” (released April 2015) and “Ask The Sky” (released December 2016)\, and are recording a new 12-song LP at Wiggle Room Studio in Los Angeles with Steve Kille (Dead Meadow / Xemu Records). \nThe sound of The Spiral Electric is one part soaring melody\, one part face melting guitar\, one part orbiting synth\, one part danceable groove and a heavy dose of west coast psychedelia\, shaken not stirred. Drink it straight\, no chaser! \nKILLER KAYA\n(Santa Barbara)\nKiller Kaya is a six piece psychedelic and funk outfit based out of Santa Barbara\, California. Named after a rather large house cat\, Killer Kaya has a 60’s era psychedelic sound with funk and soul elements and is composed of Apoorva Chiplunkar on vocals\, Zach Rengert on guitar/drums\, Eric Engel on drums/guitar\, Alex Pavellas on bass\, Cory Lund on trumpet and keys\, and Josh Sheltzer on saxophone. The lovechild of scientists and hippies\, Killer Kaya is reminiscent of the days where flower children roamed free and incense swirled about in whimsical billows. Sun soaked melodic threads run through Killer Kaya’s rainbow prism of sound\, evocative of bands like Janis Joplin and Big Brother and The Holding Company and Jefferson Airplane. \nKiller Kaya released their first EP titled Cigarette Echolocation in 2015 and their first full length album\, 29 Lives in August 2017. Having played throughout the Central Coast\, Los Angeles\, the Bay Area\, Killer Kaya has shared the bill with notable musicians like funk legend Shuggie Otis and Chad Smith of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Having made their festival debut at Starry Nites Festival alongside acts like The Kills\, The Dandy Warhols\, Cat Power\, and Teenage Fanclub this March\, Killer Kaya also performed at the 2017 Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival and with SF based rockers Gabby Lala & Snow Angel through the Central Coast and Northern California areas in fall 2017. Killer Kaya will be recording new material in early 2018 and will be playing dates throughout the Southern & Northern California areas.

SUMMARY:Grab 'Em By The Songs
DESCRIPTION:Grab ‘Em By The Songs \nTuesday\, February 6 \n7:30 PM | No Cover \nHost and founder Kim Lembo present’s “Grab ‘Em By The Songs” the first Tuesdays of the month at The Uptown in downtown Oakland featuring women sharing songs in the round. \nFebruary Songwriters: \nKim Lembo\nWhether with her full band or\, solo Lembo brings blues\, with an edgy soulfulness combined with poetic lyrics and storytelling. Her voice is big and echoes a kind of Etta James meets Lucinda Williams if they played in a band with Janis Joplin. It is the sound of music that can not be defined by a singular genre. She sings from her soul with songs written from the heart.\nLembo has played all over the US and has recorded in France\, California\, and NY. From the stages of Paris to hiking up the side of the Great Wall of China with a guitar and a slightly broken foot\, she has brought her uniquely deep and powerful voice to thousands throughout the world. Lembo has a voice to be reckoned with and a story to be shared. \nKim Lembo can be found around the Bay Area rabble-rousing and playing/producing events. \n  \nPaige Clem\nPerhaps it’s the combination of her insatiable musical curiosity and her formative years spent growing up in the South\, but Paige Clem’s arrestingly direct lyrics and velvety\, unaffected vocals exude that most elusive of musical qualities — Soul. With a natural gift for connecting with an audience\, her roots-infused music is melodic and warm\, yet packs a punch with tales of loss and love. Described by Jambase as a “charismatic and affable singer-songwriter…with a sultry\, Jewel-reminiscent vocal quality\,” her folk-soul-with-a-dash-of-sass sound draws on threads of blues and Americana with an honest and often clever accessibility that offers listeners a refreshing departure from the formulaic nature of so much indie rock these days. \nPaige has served multiple stints as songwriter-in-residency at The Bazaar Cafe and is the creator\, curator and host of the popular “Songs About Something: Old\, New\, Borrowed and Blue Tunes in the Round”—an ongoing monthly songwriters-in-the-round series held at Albany’s Ivy Room. Her bluesy yet melodic approach to song has been shared from the stage at High Sierra Music Festival\, DelFest\, Hangtown Halloween Ball\, Cuko Rakko Music Festival\, ULUV Music Day and many of the Bay Area’s most popular haunts\, including The Fillmore\, Great American Music Hall\, Terrapin Crossroads\, Boom Boom Room\, Freight & Salvage\, Sweetwater Music Hall\, Ashkenaz and more. \nPaige will be featured in the upcoming documentary\, The Creative High\, and is currently recording her debut solo album slated to be released in early 2018. \n  \nAudrey Howard\n“Audrey Howard counts Ani DiFranco\, Sonic Youth\, and Led Zeppelin among her influences. Her distinctive songs reflect that blend of emotional rawness\, indie/experimental sounds\, and classic rock groove. Audrey is known for her sweet\, soulful voice\, her playful on-stage banter\, and her impressive guitar shredding. Don’t miss seeing this Bay Area treasure!” \nFacebook RSVP

SUMMARY:Wax Idols\, Cold Showers\, Second Still\, + DJ Fernando (KALX)
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 26\nWax Idols | Cold Showers | Second Still\nThe Uptown | 1928 Telegraph Avenue\, Oakland\nDoors 9PM | Show 9:30PM\n$8 Advance | $10 Doors\n21+ | Wheelchair Accessible \nCold Showers – coldshowers.bandcamp.com\nCold Showers\, a band formed in Highland Park\, California in 2010\, fuses the brash power of their shoegaze pedigree with the smokey compulsions of post-punk / no-wave ancestors. Cold Showers would fit in well amongst their idols on the Factory or early Rough Trade back catalog\, but blend in perfectly amongst the unique foliage of the Dais Records roster. Cold Showers sophomore album out sees the band step up to the plate with more pop sensibility under their belt with the tracks of their new album “Matter of Choice”. This is the pervasive pop mode against which Cold Showers cast themselves\, but haven’t fully relinquished themselves from their signature piston-precision rhythms and anthem laden synthesizer illuminations that came about within the band’s formation. \nAfter the band released singles on Mexican Summer and Art Fag\, Cold Showers signed with Dais Records. In the late summer of 2012\, Dais had released the band band’s debut album\, Love and Regret\, to a storm of industry praise and critical acclaim. After a few successful tours with bands such as The Soft Moon & Veronica Falls\, Cold Showers members decided to take some time off to start crafting new songs in a more pop-oriented direction. These songs started to take demonstrational form in a handful of singles and live cassette releases on Dais until the band decided to hunker down in the studio to formalize the songs found on their new album\, Matter of Choice\, available August 28th\, 2015. \nWax Idols – waxidols.bandcamp.com\nWax Idols are a four-piece based out of Oakland\, CA; their sound calls on the mutated aesthetics of varying strains of post-punk (songwriting elements from darkwave and Factory/Rough Trade pioneers\, as well as the complex interplay and emotion of post-hardcore)\, without carbon-copying those who made these maps. Hether Fortune’s powerful voice as the songwriter\, arranger\, producer\, singer and guitarist is at the center\, but this makes no other member of the band a replaceable element. Their work together is what makes Wax Idols’ energy these days so vital. \nTheir forthcoming (and fourth) album Happy Ending is set to be released in Spring 2018\, exploring the abstraction & finality of death from both philosophical/political and personal perspectives. This dual theme of political anxiety and personal experience is one Fortune began exploring in seriousness on Wax Idols’ critically-acclaimed third album\, American Tragic\, which Pitchfork proclaimed “smartly unpacks a pretty universal experience—the sadness\, nostalgia\, and occasional euphoria involved in letting go of something you once cared about\, even when it desperately hurts.” American Tragic was recently reissued on the band’s label Etruscan Gold Records\, with a limited-edition alternate cover & remix of the standout single “Deborah” by the band’s own Peter Lightning. -Jes Skolnik \nSecond Still – secondstill.bandcamp.com\nSecond Still is a darkwave / post-punk band from Los Angeles. Their debut eponymous album is available as an LP and CD on Manic Depression Records and via cassette on Brussels collective\, Sentimental. \n  \nFacebook RSVP

SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays Presents: Blues & Cat People
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for our monthly celebration of live music and film. No cover and great fun.\nHosts ~ Ginger Murray & Elena Moroz \nCat People ~ this classic 1942 horror film produced directed by Jacques Tourneur was based on Val Lewton’s short story The Bagheeta\, published in 1930. Cat People tells the story of a young Serbian woman\, Irena\, who believes herself to be a descendant of a race of people who turn into cats when sexually aroused or deeply angered. It also features cats.\nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbell of www.lewtonbus.net.\n(Yes\, the name of the review site was inspired by the film). \nMusic ~The performing band is a surprise! All you need to know is that they are a great bluesy group with growl and a fiddle based out of San Francisco\, CA. “Long\, wild years on the road\, mixed with a deep base in roots and funk – blending Tom Waits with Tom Petty and the JBs – shaped them into a modern explosion of new sound. They have played across America\, India\, Ukraine\, France\, Singapore and Vietnam”. \nStay after for the Active Music Series \nFacebook RSVP
