SUMMARY:Night Animals\, Brass Animals\, and Li'l Elephant
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to The Midnight Menagerie: A funk showcase featuring Night Animals\, Brass Animals\, Li’l Elephant and DJ Shoebox! \n9pm\, 21+ \n$10 – Get advance tix! \n930p Oddjob Ensemble\n1030p Rikkha\n1130p Junk Parlor\n1245p DJ Shoebox \nNight Animals\nNight Animals is a six-piece funk pop band based in San Francisco. After releasing their debut album\, Resonate\, in 2016\, the band has played nearly 30 blow-out shows at some of the best venues on both coasts. Night Animals performances hum with the band’s high-energy compositions and its love of improvisation–but also its undying commitment to stage performance. Night Animals bring in costumes\, lights\, art\, and audience participation to create a memorable and celebratory live experience: each show is a new story.\n?\nBrass Animals\nBrass Animals formed in San Francisco in 2013 with a simple vision: music to make people dance. Fusing New Orleans-style brass band tradition with an eclectic blend of hip-hop\, R&B\, funk and pop\, the band serves up explosive renditions of recent favorites by artists like Beyoncé\, Bruno Mars\, Aaliyah\, Kanye West\, and Janelle Monáe\, and puts their own spin on vintage classics by Stevie Wonder\, Sly & the Family Stone\, Funkadelic\, Labelle and more. A typical Brass Animals gig features hard-hitting brass-led jams plus a set of lead vocal stylings from the divine Niki Stone. Riding high on jam-packed shows throughout the Bay Area\, from the stages at Brick & Mortar Music Hall and the Boom Boom Room to outdoor festivals in the East Bay\, South Bay and beyond\, the band has solidified as a mainstay among the burgeoning west coast brass band scene. Brass Animals continues to break new ground\, merging modern and classic sounds to make you move. \nLi’l Elephant\nLil’ Elephant is an unconventional Oakland ensemble bringing original tunes to stages of all sizes throughout the Bay Area. A labor of love several years in the making\, this band of four motley miscreants fuses funk\, rock\, roll\, rap\, and classical influences into an exceptional and eclectic musical shmorgasboard. Major influences include Funkadelic\, Traffic\, In Flames\, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. You’ll find your feet tapping and your hips swaying before you know it. You can listen to some tunes at www.lilelephunk.com

SUMMARY:CHROME - Record Release Party!
DESCRIPTION:Chrome was forged from the chaos and excess of mid-’70s Bay Area culture. The death throes of the Stooges and the accessibility of psychedelics led founding drummer Damon Edge to court sonic apocalypse. In 1976\, he was joined by guitarist Helios Creed\, and the two became the core of a sonic maelstrom that straddled proto-industrial\, acid-punk and lo-fi experimentation. The group’s influence has been vast\, though its success was obviously limited by the extremes of its expression and lack of a specific genre. Edge passed in 1995\, and since then\, Creed has resurrected the Chrome brand while simultaneously releasing over 20 solo albums. Techromancy\, the newest studio LP from the band will be on sale at this show\, and it handily recalls the best of Creed’s solo work while nodding to some of the more accessible Chrome tracks featured on the Half Machines From the Sun collection. Over-effected guitars cross streams with maniacal echoing vocals over bouncing\, repetitive drumbeats. Techromancy won’t burn out your remaining serotonin\, but it just might make you dance. NATHAN CARSON. \nGET TIX! \n8pm\, 21+\, $12

SUMMARY:Active Music Series: Ives Band\, Nakata\, FootSos
DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series Presents: Ives Band\, Nakata & FootSos \n—————————————– \n9:00 PM doors. 9:30 PM music. \nSuggested donation $5-15 \nTHE IVES BAND works to innovate a new approach to familiar melodies. The band plays multiple melodies simultaneously\, usually in contrasting keys and tempi\, creating musical collages inspired by Charles Ives\, Luciano Berio\, John Oswald. Melodies come from well-known folk tunes\, pop songs\, classical music\, children’s songs\, etc.; anything that is familiar or cliche in contemporary American culture. Melodies remain intentionally recognizable\, while the experience of hearing melodies is radically reconstructed. Music is directed and arranged by composer and pianist Andrew Jamieson. http://www.andrewbarnesjamieson.com/ \n-Zachary Hazen\, and Mia Bella D’Augelli\, violins \n-Joshua Marshall\, tenor saxophone \n-Andrew Jamieson\, Brett Carson and Ben Zucker\, keyboards \n-Roger Kim\, Guitar \n-Aaron Oppenheim\, latpop \n-Tim DeCillis\, percussion \n(From Christmas 2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfYlSG-LTj4 \nNAKATA is a free-improv duo consisting of Patrick Shiroishi on saxophones & Paco Casanova on keys. The two have been playing improvised music for 5 years as a duo and also in the progressive instrumental quintet Corima. They are releasing their first official record on Jacknife Records exploring different sonic qualities both instruments have to offer. They will be joined by Oakland percussionist Jacob Felix Heule. \nhttp://nakata.bandcamp.com/ \nFOOTSOS (Angela Roberts\, Dianne Lynn\, and Theresa Currie) Sticky sweet. Is these three ladies or what with some secret returning to subterfuge or something like a tribute band of lost nostalgic selves. Is it bad times for gluttons and low-carb false consciousness? SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesdays presents Crumbs & Crux
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of writing\, Crumbs the film and saucy tunes by the one and only Ingrid Keir. Free. \nVoice from the Field – Writing Gathering – 5:30 to 7pm. \nArt is very important in our current climate and can give voice to our suffering and triumphs. But there are also those – mental health professionals\, social justice lawyers\, social service professionals\, volunteers etc. – who do the hard work every day to alleviate that suffering. Their voices are also mightily important. We are creating a space for these voices to gather and write their stories. This is the 1st of what will be a monthly gathering. Performances may ensue in the future. \nFilm: Crumbs – an Afrofuturist Tale \n“Directed by Spaniard Llansó\, who actually lives in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)\, “Crumbs” stars Daniel Tadesse\, and tells a story of diminutive superhero Gagano (played by Tadesse)\, a junk collector\, who embarks on a “surreal epic journey” that’s set against “post-apocalyptic Ethiopian landscapes\,” says the press description. He’s had enough of collecting “valuable crumbs of a decayed civilization\,” when a spaceship that has been hovering high in the sky for years\, starts showing signs of activity\, and Gagano has to overcome his fears – which includes a witch\, Santa Claus and second-generation Nazis – to find out that the world isn’t quite what he thought it was.” \nFilm courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbel of www.lewtonbus.net \nDJ: Ingrid Keir. 7 to 9pm \nSoul\, Latin and the art of the chantuese. \nIngrid Keir is a poet\, performer and educator. She is co-founder of the WordParty\, a long-running San Francisco poetry and jazz series. She has been a featured reader at diverse venues in the Bay Area including the DeYoung Museum\, The Beat Museum\, City Hall\, Quiet Lightning as well as many others. Ingrid has lectured Creative Writing at San Francisco State University where she taught undergraduate poetry\, fiction and playwriting while simultaneously engaging students with writers of the Bay Area. She also received both her M.F.A and B.A. degrees at San Francisco State University. She has written several chapbooks: The Secrets of Like (2004)\, Toward the Light (2007) and recently released a new book of poetry in September 2016\, The Choreography of Nests\, published by Feather Press. Ingrid has been published in many literary journals including: Two Hawks Quarterly\, The Haight Ashbury Literary Journal\, Sparkle and Blink and Out of Our. She was also shortlisted in the 2016 Litquake poetry contest. \nhttp://www.ingridkeir.com/

SUMMARY:Junk Parlor - Rikkha - Oddjob Ensemble!
DESCRIPTION:Uptown’s Thursday night showcase presenting: \nJunk Parlor \nRikkha (Paris) \nOddjob Ensemble \n8pm\, $8\, 21+ \nGet Tickets! \nABOUT THE BANDS: \nA galvanizing force on the Bay Area indie rock scene since launching serendipitously in 2013\, Junk Parlor is that crazy-rare band whose vibe is so driven by joyful schizophrenia that it transcends easy genre trappings. \nBorn from the wild musical wanderings of Jason Vanderford\, renowned for his five years recording and touring with gypsy jazz sensation The Hot Club of San Francisco\, their energizing musical collage includes 50’s rock and roll rumbling atop gypsy rhythms\, a bit of Gipsy Rhumba\, tango\, Eastern Euro/Hungarian music\, bellydance\, punk…Vanderford was raised on “rock and roll and punk and everything under the sun\,” so other sounds are certain to appear as the gypsy junk rockers continue their jam. \nRikkha is a french punk rock band based in Paris.\nThe band identity is made of a well balanced mix of several influences including Garage Rock and Cabaret.\nSince 2011 the band has released 2 EP’s (Kitten on Wheels\, Covers) and one album (Nuit Fatale)\,\nTheir music and visuals are made of cinematographic atmospheres. It depicts the glory of a wild womanhood\, seductive and savage. Tarantino\, Rodriguez\, Burton are inspiring Rikkha with their heroines and comics monsters haunting each one of their song.\nPrime mover of the project\, Seb le Bison\, music producer\, composer\, musician and aesthete joins forces with Juliette Dragon\, queen of the Parisian nights and pioneer of the Burlesque movement in France. Together they create an astonishing stage cocktail . Rikkha live is a real Punk’n’roll cabaret inspired by pin-ups\, superheroes and zombies from Z movies.\nTheir californian nickname is: “The French Cramps”\nThe band has been touring in whole France\, Europe (Germany\, Belgium\, Switzerland)\nAnd toured several times in US\, California ( Los Angeles\, Long Beach\, Pomona\, San Diego\, San Francisco\, San Jose) …\nAfter a break in 2015\, the band is coming back with a new rhythm section\, and prepare a new album (Ocotber 2017) \nOddjob Ensemble is Kalei Yamanoha’s strange and wonderful brainchild\, a consortium of multi-instrumentalists and specialists\, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. \nWith powerful ancient melodies and sounds that twist the ear into a delicious musical pretzel\, they touch upon many different cultural influences and find unusual but fascinating combinations of traditional styles\, jazz\, and progressive music. Largely instrumental\, an evening with the Oddjob Ensemble is a showcase of stunning musicianship\, exotic tonalities and of course shenanigans.

It is dedicated to highlighting the work of artists that embrace experimentalism\, are informed by traditions\, and demonstrate the confidence to combine complex concepts into unified works. \nAs a series that supports works of (but not limited to) experimental notation\, electro-acoustic performance\, conduction\, compositions with improvisation\, avant jazz\, free improvisation\, chamber music and electronic noise\, the AMS is an active and supportive element for bay area musicians and community members. Both emerging and established artists are invited to perform on the series. This opportunity breathes life and inspiration into performers\, composers\, and audience members. Since it’s inception Aram Shelton has curated the series and managed performances. In the past several months he has been joined by Jacob Felix Heule and Crystal Pascucci\, in both administerial and curatorial roles. As active performers\, Shelton\, Pascucci and Heule are familiar with the performance practices of creative music in the Bay Area and see the AMS as working toward the development of the artistic community\, providing opportunities for musicians to regularly present work. Over the course of the series\, more than 100 local musicians have been given the opportunity to perform in acts ranging from 20 piece large groups to solo and duo performances. Notable artists who have performed include ROVA\, the Oakland Active Orchestra\, Lisa Mezzacappa’s Bait and Switch\, Moe!kestra\, James Fei Alto Quartet\, Aaron Novik’s Thorny Brocky\, and Phillip Greenlief’s Citta di Vitti. \nThe Active Music Series continues at the Uptown Nightclub\, a well known and centrally located venue that does not normally have creative music\, as a way to give local performing musicians the opportunity to present new works to new listeners\, while also fostering an environment focused on the social community as a way for musicians to meet other local musicians in hopes of spurring on further creative developments and collaborations. \nAll concerts of the Active Music Series are supported through donations. Listings can be found on the Transbay Calendar and at bayimproviser.com.
