SUMMARY:Surplus 1980 Collectiv Ensembl with G.W. Sok\, Esses\, Hazel Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Surplus 1980 is proud to announce a performance of the collaboration project of Surplus 1980 Collectiv Ensembl with G.W. Sok\, the Dutch vocalist formerly of the Ex (and currently with King Champion Sounds\, Cannibales & Vahinés\, as well as many European collaborations with Action Beat\, The And\, FiliaMotsa\, among many others). \nSURPLUS 1980 COLLECTIVE ENSEMBL \n \nSurplus 1980 Collectiv Ensembl is a project of the current member of Surplus 1980\, along with musicians who have either performed in the studio\, or live\, (or neither)\, playing extended compositions by Moe Staiano\, who’ll be conducting everyone along with G.W. Sok. The pair of performances will parallel with the release of the CD album\, ‘Forget All This’ (LP release also TBD)\, on the Italian Music ‘A La Coque label. The Surplus 1980 Collectiv Ensembl with G.W. Sok is a collaborative style of post-punk and post-rock with elaborate vocal song-telling storylines with ever changing music to help the journey go through adventurously. Instrumentation includes four guitars\, two basses\, one upright bass\, two reed players\, and two drummers. \n  \nESSES \n \nEsses is an Oakland\, CA post-punk/darkwave band which was formed in 2014. Their music has a wall of sound all their own with elements of punk\, deathrock\, doom\, and noise to create a soundscape that is both intense and intimate. The group’s members tap easily into the underground music and art aesthetic that has come to define the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. \nHazel Atlas is Kevin Robert Thompson of Enablers kevinrobertthomson.bandcam.com \n  \n$10 Advance \n21+ | wheelchair accessible \n

SUMMARY:Louda y Los Bad Hombres\, Motus\, Jamie Zee
DESCRIPTION:LOUDA’s signature sound is one that fuses pop\, hip-hop and dreamy 90’s R&B melodies to her own cadence. Breaking three thousand plays across major streaming platforms with\, “Say it To My Face\,” the unsigned indie artist is navigating her desire to be an industry crossover with avant-garde productions and coproduced Bay Area based genre bending 6-piece band\, the live extension\, LOUDA y Los Bad Hombres. https://www.loudamusic.com \nMōtus is a crew of seven jazztronauts sent from the stars with a mission to spread the funk. Their sound blends r&b\, neo-soul\, and jazz into a musical gumbo punctuated by horns\, harmonies\, and grooves that will get your head noddin’ and body rockin’. Performing styles ranging from thought-provoking ballades to backbeat funk and fusion\, Mōtus is influenced by many of today’s contemporary jazz\, R&B\, neo soul\, and hip-hop groups and producers. They find inspiration in socially and politically conscious music and aim to compose songs that are in the same vein. http://www.motus.band \nPremiering vocalist and winner of Jazz Search West 2017\, Jamie Zee is one of the Bay Area’s most sought out composers. This upcoming artist’s style is evocative\, alluring\, soulful\, and innovative. SUMMARY:Grex\, Hare and Arrow\, Jeweled Snakes
DESCRIPTION:Oakland art rock band Grex comes home to round out its 10th Anniversary Tour. Plus: sublime sights & sounds from improv ensemble Hare and Arrow and the relentless heaviness of electronic duo Jeweled Snakes. \nGrex // http://www.grexsounds.com / http://grex.bandcamp.com\nGrex is an art rock band based out of Oakland\, California. Grex has been called “essential current-and-future listening” (Tiny Mix Tapes)\, exploring the meeting point between psychedelic pop/rock and the dark outer reaches of noise and free jazz. The band recalls the explosive power of late John Coltrane\, the dark energy of Suicide\, and the whimsical weirdness of Skeleton Crew and Deerhoof. In biological terms\, “grex” refers to the aggregation of a multitude of tiny\, amoeba-like creatures combining to create a superorganism. Grex (the band) works the same way: two musicians who can function as one\, the whole greater than the sum of its parts. \nHare and Arrow // https://soundcloud.com/hare-and-arrow\n6 Stop Motion films by Hare and Arrow\nMotoko Honda – Toy Piano\nTheo Padouvas – Trumpet\nMichael Noonan – Strings\nShanna Sordahl – Strings\, Electronics\, Automata\nBrian Pedersen – Reeds\nSung Kim – Invented Instruments and Automata \nJeweled Snakes // https://jeweledsnakes.bandcamp.com/\nSkot B and Sharkiface bring you some jewels\, madame! SUMMARY:DASH\, Boots and the Kats\, Lil' Elephant
DESCRIPTION:DASH brings their unique sound back to the bay area. They’re joined by Boots and The Kats and Lil’ Elephant. \nMusic at 8:30PM\n$10 Cover \nDASH is a progressive electro-soul duo\, featuring lush synths\, live keys\, bass\, and guitar\, dynamic electronic percussion\, and their signature vocal harmonies.\nDASH began in February 2018\, after lead members Kayti Korte and Ben Morris began writing songs together. The vocal powerhouse duo aimed for a full band sound rooted in rock ‘n roll\, soul\, and funk. The band played their first show in March 2018\, and released their debut single\, ‘Apathy’\, in May 2018\, followed by their debut album\, ‘SUPER’\, in October 2018. ‘SUPER’ is the sound of that first\, fiery rock band. Upon releasing their debut album\, DASH hit the road. In their first year they were named “Best New Local Band” and had the #2 “Best New Album” by the Bozeman Magazine.\nOn January 1st\, 2019\, DASH lost their drummer\, immediately after replacing their bass player. Not being able to find a replacement two weeks out from a tour\, they were pushed to find alternatives to keep moving. An entire tour with MIDI drums spurred their EP ‘Desperate Electric into existence. After losing their second bass player\, the pair took to the studio themselves\, recording everything themselves\, and co-producing the EP with local producer Patch William.\nAfter touring all spring\, DASH hits the road in their current form; progressive electro-soul\, foreshadowed by their EP ‘Desperate Electric’. DASH hits the road this summer to bring their unique style to a stage near you.

SUMMARY:Soul Vision Records Presents: Savage Mind - 1995 - Album Release
DESCRIPTION:Bio: Born in the Philippines but raised in Pittsburg\, CA\, Savage Mind is an up-and-coming Bay Area based Jazz Musician turned rapper/producer. His style meshes smooth and soulful harmonies with the exhilarating bounce of G-funk and Boom Bap rap but with a Bay Area bounce. After graduation from UC Berkeley\, he released his first project Soul as a summary of his years in college. He began rapping in 2013 and beat-making/producing in 2014. Influences include J.Cole\, Mozzy\, Caleborate\, Elujay as well as Terrace Martin\, Boogie\, Kendrick Lamar\, Dr. Dre\, and Quincy Jones. He continues to collaborate with producers\, artists\, and creative people all around the East Bay and the greater Bay Area in general. \nAlbum Info: 1995 is Savage Mind’s largest album debut release to date. With 15-tracks and 7 featured artists\, his album explores a wide arrange of hip-hop sub-genres\, maneuvering through elegant rhythmic and harmonic flurries simultaneously with the ferocity of booming 808s and piercing lyricism. 1995 is an ode to his birth year and generation but also content-wise\, a manifestation of his working-class and immigrant struggles. The album is a shout for Savage Mind’s existence and a musical offering to his homies\, heritage\, and ancestry. \nSupport from:\nsounds by Niko\nJ.Rap\nSharif Hassan\nZaldy Tubig\nMVK \n21+ with valid ID \nThe Uptown is just around the corner from 19th Street BART and is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Major! Film Benefit for Mama Major Auntie Sharyn Grayson
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nA BENEFIT for our revered trans Elder Activists: Sharyn Grayson manages House of GG’s: Griffin-Gracy Educational Retreat & Historical Center and Urban Sanctuary in Arkansas. Miss Major is a veteran of the Stonewall Rebellion and a survivor of Attica State Prison\, a former sex worker\, an elder\, and a community leader and activist. For the next week 7.9.19 – 7.15.19\, we will be collecting funds for the next week and anything collected during this period will fund Auntie Sharyn Grayson and Mama Major. Look below for details. \n“Miss Major” – has suffered a stroke and Auntie Sharyn Grayson has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor that will require surgery. On Sunday\, July 14th\, 2019\, we will raise awareness and funds for both of our trans elder activists Mama Major + Sharyn Grayson via a screening of the documentary MAJOR! Medical bills and care for Miss Major after her recent hospitalization. Please help support the women who has been mama and comrade for so many people in her giant chosen family. \nMiss Major Medical Update: She is about to transfer to inpatient acute rehab today. She still has weakness on the right side and slurred speech but she was singing along to music and smiling this morning. \nSharyn Grayson Medical Update: I just got off the phone with my surgeon regarding Wednesday. The latest test results show\, apparently\, the tumor is much closer to an artery than was originally noted. Hence the reason for my extreme shortness of breath and weakness. This is a concern\, in that I may not be able to sustain the original surgery as planned. However\, he has to go in to determine if he can remove the tumor without creating trauma to the artery and my breathing capacity. If not\, he will discontinue the surgery and we will have to proceed with radiation treatment. This would not be the best option\, but it is ‘an option’! With everything else going on…this is now a little bit more to take in! I was resigned to the surgical procedure we originally discussed and planned…this “curveball” places a new spin on things! Wow! My “big sis/warrior” is down…and here I stand in this dark\, lonely space…truly praying (now) for a miracle! \nWORDS from Auntie Sharyn Grayson:\nY’all keep us both in your prayers. This is really a critical time for us…and when you’ve heard me speak about “our being tired – bodies worn – and having to count on our younger leaders to step up”…THIS is the reality!!! But\, I know you know that WE love you…so keep us in your prayers and loving thoughts as we move forward thru our separate journeys

Formed in 2018\, the band meshes guitars and hushed vocals of ’90s shoegaze with the urgency and mechanical rhythms of post-punk. “A hypnotic wall of fuzzy distortions and reverbs and repetitive drums\, backed by dreamy vocals\, all bathed in a lysergic\, obsessive and soaring haze\, that\, instead of imploding\, floating in a wonderful mess of melodies and swirling harmonies for a pure intense and emotional ending.” – White Light / White Heat \nVacant Stares  \nVacant Stares is a saturated goth band from Portland with brooding vocals and hints of cold wave and danceable synth pop. \nFawns of Love  \nFawns of Love is a dreampop duo from Bakersfield comprised of married couple Joseph and Jenny\, both of whom are also full-time educators – Joseph teaches middle school\, Jenny is a full-time instructor at CSU-Bakersfield. They have been married for 15 years and performing together for 18 years; recording\, touring\, and releasing music throughout that time under various names and labels. SUMMARY:KALX Presents: Cindy\, Blades of Joy\, Al Harper
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 27\n8pm \nKALX Presents\nCindy – cindytheband.bandcamp.com\nBlades of Joy – bladesofjoy.bandcamp.com\nAl Harper – alharper.bandcamp.com \nFacebook RSVP \nTickets \n  \nCindy \nCindy is a dreamy indiepop / sad rock band from San Francisco. They self-released their debut 12″ LP in November 2018. It has charted on KALX radio as one of the 50 most played records on air for three consecutive months\, topping in at #27. \nBlades of Joy \nBlades of Joy features ex-members of Swanox and Dissolve. Their debut LP was recently released by San Francisco indie label Melters. It is pure pop for poets\, rock for reality. How good this music is remains one of San Francisco’s most closely-guarded secrets\, but talk to the right people and you’ll find out what’s been causing murmurs of adoration and envy. Blades of Joy do wear some influences on their sleeves: listen for guitar lines that pull threads from the spooky and spectral coats of the DURUTTI COLUMN and FELT\, pull reels of tape from the wistful Tascam of ROY MONTGOMERY in his East Village years\, pull a gin-soaked paper towel out of the Levi’s jacket of the RED HOUSE PAINTERS. Vocals that channel the sublime clarity of KENDRA SMITH or BARBARA MANNING. A real rock band rhythm section capable of riding a cosmic groove guaranteed to delight Slumberland/Teenbeat aficionados. \nAl Harper \nAl Harper is an Oakland musician who fronts her soft rock / dreampop band of the same name. Her songs will make you weep discreetly as they drag you through a high school soap opera’s worth of emotions. \n$5 Advance | $10 At the Door\nwheelchair accessible | 21+

SUMMARY:Sit Kitty Sit\, Victoria & The Vaudevillains\, Ruby Landen
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free show at the Uptown with local bands\nSit Kitty Sit\nVictoria and the Vaudevillains\nand touring:\nRuby Landen \nSit Kitty Sit \nKat Downs (piano/vox) and Mike Thompson (drums) create an undeniable pop/proggy piano and drum duo which has been described as Dresden Dolls mixed with King Crimson and Fiona Apple \n  \nVictoria & The Vaudevillains \nNot your ordinary band\, Victoria and the Vaudevillains is visually stunning performance art. Fronted by Victoria Victrola\, the Vaudevillains’ punk cabaret sound ranges from soft and pretty to clanging\, banging piano rock. Dancers and living statues create an atmosphere of a twisted burlesque carnival….with ZOMBIES. \n  \nRuby Landen \nOriginally from Northern California\, Brooklyn singer/songwriter Ruby Landen started (seriously) playing music while living in Paris\, France. As she started writing her own songs and playing in slightly cleaner venues than the Paris metro\, her musical upbringing became apparent in her own writing: folk and americana influenced\, speculating often on the uselessness of words as a form of communication\, but also more fun things like heartbreak and nostalgia.
