DESCRIPTION:((( SOLD OUT ))) \nSaturday\, May 19 \nKing Of The Dot Entertainment Presents Town Bidness Rap Battle \n1pm – 8pm \n$30 \n1pm – 8pm \n21+ \nWalk towards the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto and you might pass by a tiny park\, hidden in an alley just off Yonge Street. It doesn’t look like much. It’s partially fenced up\, not maintained in the slightest\, and almost always empty. You’d probably never guess that this park\, hidden among the concrete playground that is the core of Toronto\, was the birthplace of one of the biggest and most exciting underground hip hop movements in the entire world. \nKing of the Dot\, North America’s premier hip hop battling league\, emerged onto the scene in August of 2008 with a small following and big dreams\, dreams that one day it would be the battle rap community for Toronto…. Just Toronto.”I never thought we’d ever have fans outside of Toronto\, let alone Canada\, That’s why I named it King Of The Dot.” says Organik\, Founder of KOTD. The amount of growth the league has seen since its inception is something not even its biggest supporters could have predicted. Over 650\,000 viewers subscribe to the KOTD YouTube channel\, watching the league’s 1000+ battles to the tune of over 190 million total views. hop legends such as Drake\, Sean Price\, Alchemist\, Classified\, Choclair\, Canibus\, Jeru Tha Damaja\, Maestro\, and more have all expressed their admiration of the company and even worn KOTD clothes. News outlets such as the National Post\, Maxim Magazine\, Canadian Music Magazine\, MTV Canada and Forbes Online have covered the movement. Within three short years KOTD has gone from a few park-side battles to one of the most impressive forces in battle rap worldwide.\nToday\, KOTD is much more than a local battling league; It houses divisions all across North America\, giving emcees the opportunity to prove themselves in Vancouver\, Toronto\, Arizona\, California and more. Two Grand Prix tournaments have been held with $10\, 000 in total prize money and the most respected championship titles in battle rap served to the victors. The league is renowned for its quality product and professional organization worldwide\, with battlers from countries such as Russia\, South Africa\, England\, Australia\, Sweden and the Philippines all eager to make the trip to Canada to be featured in KOTD’s annual World Domination Event.

SUMMARY:The Y Axes\, The Trims\, Honey Cutt
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 17\n9pm \nThe Y Axes – theyaxes.bandcamp.com\nThe Trims – thetrims.bandcamp.com\nHoney Cutt – honeycuttband.bandcamp.com \nThe Y Axes are a San Francisco-based indie outfit who play a unique blend of dreamy\, synth-glossed pop and rhythmically muscular rock. They create energetic and hard-hitting pop with intricate instrumentations and ethereal vocal melodies that can stick in your mind for weeks. Their latest album\, Umbra\, was produced by Aaron Hellam (Finish Ticket\, Rin Tin Tiger\, Black Map\, etc.) at Hellam Sound and released November 26. \n“The Trims are an Indie/Dance/Post-Punk band from San Jose. They have a sound reminiscent of early U2 and some ’80s – ’90s Britpop. The Trims were recently featured on MTV’s The Real World. \nHoney Cutt (fka Baby!) is a dreamy guitar pop trio from Boston. “Lead single ‘If I’m Sorry’ sounds at once apathetic and driven with its respective heavy\, humid reverb and background guitar solos. Lyrically\, too\, “If I’m Sorry” poses that hypothetical—a conditional of remorse or regret—that’s not entirely swayed toward either determination.” – Paste \n21+ | wheelchair accessible\n$8 Advance | $10 At the Door

SUMMARY:Tatsuya Nakatani\, Degradient\, Sharon Tate Fetus Explosion
DESCRIPTION:Tatsuya Nakatani:::::::\nTatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde sound artist\, composer\, and master percussionist originally from Osaka\, Japan. Based in the USA since 1994\, he lives in Truth or Consequences\, NM. Since the late 1990’s\, Nakatani has released over 80 recordings in the USA and Europe and has toured extensively; performing solo\, in collaboration with other artists\, and with his large ensemble project – the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. He presents masterclasses\, workshops\, and lectures across the USA and around the world. \nNakatani’s approach to music is visceral\, non-linear and intuitively primitive\, expressing an unusually strong spirit while resisting genre. He creates sound with both traditional and extended percussion techniques. Utilizing his adapted bowed gong\, drums\, cymbals\, singing bowls\, metal objects and bells\, as well as various sticks\, kitchen tools\, and his breath he manifests an intense and organic music that represents a very personal sonic world. His approach is steeped in the sensibilities of free improvisation\, experimental music\, jazz\, metal and noise\, and yet retains the sense of space and quiet beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music. His percussive instruments can imitate the sound of a trumpet\, a stringed instrument\, an electronic device…to the extent that it becomes difficult to recognize the source of the sound. He has devoted himself to a musical aesthetic where rhythm gives way to pulse\, often in a way that is not always audible or visible\, in currents that incorporate silence and texture. Nakatani’s primary music activities include solo percussive performance\, his Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO)\, and collaborations with musicians and dancers both in live performance and recordings. \nTatsuya Nakatani has spent the last 20 years traveling and performing extensively throughout the United States and beyond. His constant touring fosters the raw and fresh quality in his music which can only survive through an open willingness to share energy\, culture\, music and self on a global human scale.\nhttp://www.tatsuyanakatani.com/ \nSharon Tate Fetus Explosion::::::::\nSharon Tate Fetus Explosion is currently a solo project of Sarah Lockhart. No Wave-inspired\, post-industrial\, art-damaged\, and generally damaged. Huddling under the noise umbrella\, some of STFE’s material is songs with words. Instrumentation includes metal percussion\, electronics\, and vocals. Content includes: real estate development\, social media trends\, normcore\, and the inner lives of domestic animals.https://sharontatefetusexplosion.bandcamp.com/releases \nKyle Bruckmann’s Degradient::::::\nAfter 13 busy years maintaining poly-stylistic sideman duties and long-distance collaborations with former Chicago comrades\, Bruckmann finally busts out as bandleader of a Bay Area ensemble. Gleefully colliding elements of skronk\, fried analog noise and dark prog within a Creative Music framework\, DEGRADIENT adds a significant chunk of heavy to his signature gimmicks of jittery polyrhythmic clatter\, formal complexity\, black humor\, and all-around sensory overload. The core quartet features fellow Chicago ex-pat Aram Shelton along with the in-demand rhythm section (currently driving groups including Jack O’ the Clock and the Fred Frith Trio) of Jason Hoopes and Jordan Glenn.\nhttp://kylebruckmann.com/projects/degradient/ \n$5 – $15 sliding scale\n21+ | wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:CAMP COPE\, An Horse\, Oceanator\, +DJ Fernando (KALX)
DESCRIPTION:**Orders placed for the sole purpose of resale will be cancelled** \nSaturday\, May 11\nDoors 8pm | Show 9pm\n$15 \nCAMP COPE\ncampcope.bandcamp.com \n \nCamp Cope have become somewhat of a force in music since forming in a Melbourne backyard over home job tattoos a few years ago. Shortly after the release of their acclaimed self-titled debut album\, Camp Cope launched the It Takes One campaign to say enough is enough: no more sexual and physical assault at shows. The widely-covered campaign continues to drive conversation around safe spaces at live music events\, including the implementation of an ongoing safe spaces Hotline initiative at Laneway Festival in Australia. \nTheir acclaimed sophomore album How to Socialise & Make Friends (2018) features the standout opener ‘The Opener’\, a rally cry which called the music industry to task on its sexist and inequitable structures\, and ‘The Face of God’\, a harrowing account of sexual assault at the hands of someone whose art you admire\, a song that “proved to be the most fearless and powerful thing the Melbourne trio could possibly do” (Noisey). \nThe album received widespread critical acclaim\, topping a slew of end of year lists including Brooklyn Vegan (#1 Best Album of 2018)\, Pitchfork (Best Rock Albums of 2018; ‘The Opener’ #24 Best Song of 2018)\, Billboard (#16 Best Rock Album of 2018)\, Bandcamp (#23 Best Albums of 2018)\, Stereogum (#41 Best Albums of 2018)\, The Guardian (Best Albums of 2018)\, and NPR (‘All Songs Considered’) Listeners Top 100 Albums of 2018)\, to name a few. \nThe energy at a Camp Cope show is rare. Not just because they write good songs that have the audience on their feet. They’re a band that takes action – they say no\, they stand their ground\, they take up space\, and the audience can feel the power from those words. They unite in a space that is truly equal as they scream back every word\, arms in the air\, veins pulsating. You can feel it in the air. It doesn’t just feel a show – it feels like an uprising. \nAN HORSE \n \nAn Horse is an indiepop duo from Brisbane\, Australia. They began making music together in 2007 and released their first two LPs on Mom + Pop. They are set to release their latest LP in April on Lame-O Records. \nOCEANATOR \n \nOceanator is the solo project of Brooklyn artist Elise Okusami. Oceanator oscillates between post-rock ballads\, grunge-punk\, and a bit of synth pop. Their latest EP was released by Tiny Engines in 2018. \n  \nThe Uptown\n1928 Telegraph Avenue\, Oakland\n21+ | Wheelchair Accessible \n

SUMMARY:Overland\, Radiokeys\, Dear County\, Northerner
DESCRIPTION:Overland\nA constant force at music venues and festivals through energetic bouts of electric aggression and emotion furiously flung without much care of consequence\, this four-piece alternative heavy rock band has built a solid following.Radiokeys\nSibling songwriters Stewart Patrick and Emily Helena Gude come together to form the band RADIOKEYS\, a musical entity that flirts with traditional sounds\, yet creates a unique\, jagged form of the blues and folk. They have grown from a two-piece to a four-piece band\, now including bay area musicians Allante Piazza on drums and Thomas Davis on bass.Dear County\nMark W. Lynn and Arrica Rose met when they were kids in punk bands\, then met again many moons later for the sake of love and country. Dear County began as just the two of them with some acoustic tunes\, but has now grown to include a full band line-up with Michael Smartt (drums) and Steve Boyd (bass\, backing vocals). \nNortherner\nThe group consists of the 3 remaining members of the Bay Area indie rock band\, Wave Array. Guitarist\, Nich Pak\, and bassist\, Johan Alfsen\, had been playing in and out of Bay Area bands together for over 10 years before forming the simple\, stripped down rock sound that is Northerner. Along their musical journey they met Ruben Rios\, an in-the-pocket\, heavy hitting\, and creative drummer who has also been a long standing memeber of the Bay Area music scene. With a strong natural chemistry\, the 3 found thenmselves writing simple catchy songs with an expressive\, hard hitting and deep emotional melody. \n21+ with valid ID

DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series Presents \nNelson\, Apropos Trio: Renzi-Mezzacappa-Levis\, & Trouble Ensemble \n  \nTrouble Ensemble::::: \nRent Romus\, Joshua Marshall\, saxophones\nJakob Pek\, guitar\nTim DeCillis\, vibraphone\nAndrew Jamieson\, keyboard\nChris Lauf\, drums\nErnest Larkins\, voice \nThe spirituals illuminate the spiritual force that troubles the waters of injustice and oppression using the power of African and African American music and spirituality. Originally songs of black American slaves\, they are rooted in song\, dance and drumming of West Africa\, the experience of oppression of an uprooted people\, and the teachings of a transformative faith. They troubled the dominant narratives\, and their message and tradition continue to trouble unjust systems today. Composers and experimenters (like Sun Ra\, Charles Ives and Pauline Oliveros) troubled the musical establishment and its conventions as they envisioned radical new ways of making and listening to sound. Their traditions are a separate musical “voice” from African American spirituality and the two voices cannot merge into one. Instead\, they must converse. Listen to one another. Learn from one another. Discover harmony. Enjoy dissonance. Each with our own distinct voices\, we create\, listen to\, revere and question\, the melody\, rhythm and text derived from spirituals\, and other songs they inspired\, we revel in our own ways of enjoying\, discovering and making\ntrouble. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMsgh6JRjuI\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fopSGLUFX7Q \nApropos Trio: Renzi-Mezzacappa-Levis::::: \nMatt Renzi – clarinet\, oboe\, tenor sax\nLisa Mezzacappa – acoustic bass\nJason Levis – drums \nhttps://apropostrio.bandcamp.com/ \nJoel Nelson/Amplified Glass::::: \nOriginally from the Birmingham\, Alabama area\, Joel Nelson moved to Oakland\, California in 2016. Justin is the Co-Director of Chamber Music & Orchestral Studies at OSA. \nShannon Hubbell’s film selection this month is ‘Man with a Movie Camera’ directed by Dziga Vertov and edited by his wife Elizaveta Svilova. The film\, is famous for the range of cinematic techniques Vertov invented\, deployed or developed\, such as multiple exposure\, fast motion\, slow motion\, freeze frames\, match cuts\, jump cuts\, split screens\, extreme close-ups\, tracking shots\, reversed footage\, stop motion animations and self-reflexive visuals. \nMan with a Movie Camera was largely dismissed upon its initial release\, but in the British Film Institute’s 2012 Sight & Sound poll\, film critics voted it the eighth greatest film ever made and was later named the best documentary of all time in the same magazine. \nNo Cover!

SUMMARY:Two Piece Tuesday presents Nick Culp
DESCRIPTION:Nick Culp (Nicholas Gordon Culp) is an American pianist in the jazz idiom. Nick was born in Los Angeles\, the son of Gordon\, a professional classical guitarist and cellist\, turned aerospace engineer; and Lynne\, an English public school teacher. Nick showed great interest and aptitude toward piano since his first lessons at age 4. \nIn his middle school years\, he started attending the shows of John Magruder the big band director\, a friend of his mother’s\, which ignited a passion in him for jazz. He started working with the band’s pianist Michael Rocke who introduced him to the music of Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. \nWhile traveling in Europe in his early twenties\, Nick discovered a new mentor in French pianist Bernard Maury\, who influenced his harmonic style\, and sent him on a path to take advantage of the rich musical academia Paris had to offer. There Nick obtained a degree at Ecole Normale de Musique\, under the wing of Szymanowski protege\, Michael Vladkowski\, from ’99 to 03. \nOn his visits to his sister Miranda (a jazz singer) in the Bay Area\, he once again started sitting in on jazz sessions where he rekindled his love of bop\, which prompted his move to the Bay in ’04. \nWitnessing a lack of support for local artists of the medium\, he established Gutbucket Records in September 2011\, a not-for-profit label designed to record what he calls a “uniform sound” of local talent\, and the music they love. He remains in Oakland\, California.
