SUMMARY:Free First Friday: The Odd Numbers\, Flexx Bronco\, RnR Adventure Kids\, Harriot\, + KALX DJs Jesse Luscious & Annabelle
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, December 7\n9pm \nFirst Fridays are Free! For the past decade The Uptown has presented a Free First Friday showcase of mostly local artists we believe deserve your attention. This month features: \nThe Odd Numbers\nFlexx Bronco\nRock and Roll Adventure Kids\nHarriot \n+ KALX DJs Jesse Luscious & Annabelle \nFacebook RSVP \nTHE ODD NUMBERS:\nThe Odd Numbers are a Mod Rock Band that gained notoriety in the ’90s playing festivals in Sweden and abroad. They were in the center of a musical movement of Bay Area bands like Diatribe\, The Faction and Diesel Queens. In other circles\, they are know for much of their music being used on Skateboard videos. More recently\, The Odd Numbers have recorded a new album which has received recognition as their best album to date. \nFLEXX BRONCO\nFlexx Bronco’s influences draw from just about every genre. Flexx Bronco spans a variety of styles\, ranging from country to rock\, blues to pop and alternative. They have played over three hundred shows in the last several years\, sharing the stage with such acts such as the Supersuckers\, Agent Orange\, The Bronx\, Throw Rag\, The Black Halos\, Tesla\, Sammy Hagar\, and Death by Stereo. \nROCK AND ROLL ADVENTURE KIDS\nVoted as San Francisco’s Best New Punk Band by SF Weekly over a decade ago\, Rock and Roll Adventure Kids are a two-piece outfit from Berkeley\, California. As a guitar/drums tune slinging get-up\, these two brothers stripped down the Rn’R to reveal a skeleton of raw and psychotic backwoods aria that smashes into all the right pieces. With righteously delivered howling harmonies\, backwoods drum bang-ups\, and guitar that drags the soul right through the dumper\, the R’n’R Adventure Kids are poised to rock your socks off. \nHARRIOT\nHarriot is an all-girl band from the Bay Area. They make dark\, danceable goth surf rock that’s both subdued and enraged. Their sound is indebted to a long tradition of girl-driven punk\, indie\, and rock ‘n roll bands\, from the Go-Go’s to the Gossip to the Pixies\, with stopovers in folk (for ethereal harmonies) and stoner rock (for sludgy riffs). \nKALX DJ Jesse Luscious will be spinning records 5-9pm\, so come early!\nKALX DJ Annabelle will be spinning records 9pm-close\, so stay late! \nThe Uptown opens for Happy Hour at 5pm. First band goes on promptly at 9pm. \n21+\nWheelchair Accessible\nNo Cover

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 29\n8PM \nNIGHT SCHOOL\nTRY THE PIE\nHORRIBLE / ADORABLE \n+ DJ Fernando (KALX) \n  \nNight School – graveface.bandcamp.com/album/blush \nOakland’s jangly doo-wop-inspired garage pop / dream pop outfit Night School began working on songs in the vein of ’60s bands such as The Crystals\, The Shirelles\, and The Shangri-las with heavy distortion and reverb on guitars in 2013. SUMMARY:Alberta & Fleeting Trance
DESCRIPTION:Alberta is the music of David A. Boone. Boone’s voice\, raspy and inflected by a deliciously languid drawl\, conjures up ghostly tones of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty\, dense with uncooked\, primal timbres\, like a snarling sotto vocewhisper. It’s a grandly evocative voice\, capable of nuanced wild passion. \nThe creation of bay-area songwriter\, producer\, and multi-instrumentalist\, Manasseh (Ma’NASA) Bernal\, Fleeting Trance is a project defying classification\, category\, and genre.

SUMMARY:Jacob Aranda\, The Muddy Roses\, Bourbon Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 9\n9PM \nJacob Aranda – https://jacobaranda.bandcamp.com\nThe Muddy Roses – https://www.themuddyroses.com\nBourbon Therapy – https://www.bourbontherapy.com/music \n$8 Advance | $10 At the Door \nJacob Aranda studied at The Chicago School of Violinmaking and then traveled to Siguenza\, Spain in 2007 to study with iconic classical guitar maker Jose Luis Romanillos\, regarded as one of the greatest luthiers of the twentieth century. As a craftsman and luthier\, Jacob uses only hand tools\, avoiding factory-made practices typical of mass-market instruments. He started performing regularly\, both solo and as an accompanist (pedal steel\, mandolin\, banjo\, fiddle\, harmonica\, guitar)\, after moving to the Bay area in 2013. \nThe Muddy Roses are a New-old country\, hippie tonk Americana band from San Francisco. \nBourbon Therapy is a San Francisco-based indie rock band fronted by the husband and wife duo\, Aaron and Rebecca Skiles. Their style of upbeat music combined with downtrodden lyrics is reminiscent of the mid-90’s Counting Crows or Soul Asylum combined with the modern The Head and The Heart or Silver Sun Pickups. By mixing big guitars with piano\, strings and even an occasional harmonica\, their sound ranges from heavy riff-laden songs to expressive ballads\, providing a dynamic range of anthemic tunes. \n21+ | wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Amie Penwell & Mullerette with special guest Jeff Campbell
DESCRIPTION:Record Release Show for both Mullerette and Amie Penwell \nIf Sarah McLachlan\, Annie Lennox\, and Peter Gabriel\, were melted down and reanimated-They would become Amie Penwell… \n“Amie Penwell is breaking into the scene with her newest single to hit the streets\, “Unstoppable.” As we steadily head into Election season\, so does Penwell with her take on politics in the modern world. She carries a powerful message that will not only stop you dead in your tracks\, but will leave you thinking as well. This is only the beginning of great things to come from the artist\, and we’re on board.” \n— Buzzfeed \nBased in Berkeley\, California\, Mullerette crafts soulful\, atmospheric grooves that fearlessly follow the interplay of a Wurlitzer 200’s vintage keyboard and a haunting female vocal. The band’s velvety sonic texture – with hints of folk\, jazz and pop – stems from a long-standing collaboration between award-winning singer-songwriter Lupe Muller and keyboardist/producer Joey Muller. \nFollowing their first album\, Out of Your Spell (2013)\, Mullerette’s sound evolved into more introspective\, bare-bones ballads and synth stylings for their second album\, Wandering Hearts (2018). The new album’s delicate\, unhurried melodies were recorded live at Prairie Sun in Cotati\, California with Grammy-winning engineer Oz Fritz (Tom Waits\, Blur\, Iggy Pop). \nAn emotional\, evocative poet with a rock lover’s heart\, San Francisco singer-songwriter Jeff Campbell’s onstage experiences have taken him coast to coast countless times and found him sharing the stage with John Mayer\, members of Counting Crows\, The Grateful Dead\, and opening for Train. The passion and commitment to his craft is supremely evident in its cutting clarity. \n$15 \nseating available for advance sale ticket buyer \n21+ with ID

SUMMARY:The Purple Ones Halloween Crystal Ball - Batman Edition
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 26\n9pm \nThe Purple Ones – Insatiable Tribute to Prince (Batman Edition)\n+ DJ Spooky Calavera \n$20 Advance\n$25 Doors \nCash prize for best costume so dress to impress. \nThe Uptown\n1928 Telegraph Avenue\nOakland\n21+ \nTickets \nFacebook RSVP \nOakland California’s The Purple Ones treat the music and patented vibe of Prince with the utmost respect\, capturing the essence of what it was like to see Prince live. The musical dexterity of The Purple Ones – with 11 pieces on stage including a full horn section – completely turns the concept of a Prince tribute band on its head\, delivering Prince’s material live onstage in a way that has to be experienced to be believed. \nThe Purple Ones is a labor of love that was born in 2012 when Bay Area based bandleader and founder\, Morty Okin (“The New Morty Show”\, co-founder of the Michael Jackson tribute “Foreverland” and Neil Diamond tribute “Super Diamond”\,) decided to focus all of his energy on building the greatest Prince tribute on the planet. \nRecently\, Brown Mark and Matt “Doctor” Fink from The Revolution performed with TPO onstage and is not uncommon for the band to be joined on stage by “Honorary Purple Ones” like celebrity “Super Fan\,” comedienne Margaret Cho and members of the artist’s extended musical family\, including renowned percussionist (and brother of Sheila E\,) Juan Escovedo who toured the world with Prince in the ’80s. \nThe Purple Ones’ Musical Director is Prince’s former Musical Director\, bassist/guitarist and co-founder of Prince’s “New Power Generation\,” Levi Seacer Jr. Levi was with Prince for many years and is the only Prince band member to have played multiple instruments. Later\, collaborating with Prince as a songwriter and Co-Producer on his projects. Now the lead guitarist and Musical Director of The Purple Ones\, Seacer is determined to continue the musical legacy of his late friend and former band mate. He says one of the biggest keys to the authenticity is the ‘controlled chaos” that existed in Prince’s world that allowed for extreme creativity. “With Prince\,” Levi says\, “you tried everything. That’s the biggest thing I learned from him over all those years. If it doesn’t work you can always take it out\, but if it does work…there’s no limit.”
