SUMMARY:Near Dark Fest
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 14 \nNear Dark Fest Day 2 \nRubella Ballet\, Lux\, Fatamorgana\, Arcane\, Rubble DJs Agitator & Gary \nplus vendors TBA in upstairs mezzanine \n((( TICKETS ))) \nFACEBOOK RSVP \nRUBELLA BALLET (UK) \nConstructed around the enduring nucleus of Sid Truelove and Zillah Minx\, Rubella Ballet formed at a gig in 1979 when Crass invited their audience to use their equipment. Having been drawn to the punk movement during its initial stirrings in 1976\, Zillah and Sid became increasingly committed to its lifestyle alternatives\, taking up residence at a large commune that included the Poison Girls\, located near to Crass’ Dial House headquarters. \nLUX \nAfter a killer demo tape in 2016\, Barcelona-based hardcore punk band Lux returned with a proper full-length for 2017. Lux fuses UK82 style pogo punk with the interesting rhythms of anarcho punk. The catchy basslines are super loud in the mix and drenched in chorus\, bringing a gothy sensibility as well. Drummer Louis\, who has played in No\, Good Throb\, and a whole slue of other bands\, brings a powerful but primitive approach to the drumming\, almost tribal\, where it basically sounds like he’s muscling through it. The vocals almost have a shrieking\, banshee like quality at times\, but what makes them distinct is the sense of melody and vocal hooks\, which are truly rare in hardcore punk these days. \nSynth-punk new wave duo from Barcelona 😉 \nand more! \n21+ \nThe Uptown’s bar\, venue\, outdoor patio\, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. The upstairs mezzanine is only accessible via a thin flight of stairs. \n

SUMMARY:Active Music Series Presents: DunkelpeK\, Nurse Betty\, fluke-mogul Lechuga-Espadas Talesfore Jr Weeks
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 11 September \n9pm \nActive Music Series presents:\n– gabby fluke-mogul\, David Lechuga-Espadas\, Patrick Talesfore\, Jr.\, Tom Weeks\n– DunkelpeK\n– Nurse Betty \n$5 – $15 sliding scale \nFacebook RSVP \nNurse Betty is a noise experiment by Dianne Lynn of FootSOS\, Homoglochini\, Weird Ear Records\, and Life Changing Ministry. Born of curiosity for the art of noise and inspired by concepts and processes in life science such as circulation\, osmosis\, pressure\, and release\, her modular synths\, sequencers\, and field recordings culminate a visceral collage of equilibrium and agitation. Nurse Betty is influenced by friends and artists of the Bay Area noise scene. Dianne Lynn\, with her partner Raub Roy\, founded Weird Ear Records (2011)\, a record label reveling in disparate forms of experimental music. Their slogan\, “The Weird Ear\, The Better\,” serves as a guideline to the curatorial themes across all of these projects.\nhttps://youtu.be/b5YBlzvfjBY\nhttps://nursebetty.bandcamp.com/ \nDunkelpeK is Japanese born percussionist Nava Dunkelman and Canadian American guitarist Jakob Pek. This iconoclastic duo creates an experimental\, improvised\, exploratory music that reimagines the possibilities of the duet. Visceral\, organic\, and spontaneous in nature\, DunkelpeK’s sound transfigures and hybridizes many musics\, offering listeners a holistic exploration into the very essence of musical experience.\nDunkelpeK – Live @ Active Music Series at Uptown Night Club 8.9.16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPuUlyfqNlc\nLive at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive 6.20.16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maGZDhEwHEc \nAn improvising quartet featuring violinist gabby fluke-mogul\, guitarist David Lechuga-Espadas\, drummer Patrick Talesfore\, Jr. and saxophonist Tom Weeks.\nhttps://youtu.be/2Q07x9B9mn4

SUMMARY:The Bogues & A Hard Day's Night
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a wild and rollicking night of music and film with The BOGUES and A Hard Day’s night. No cover and great fun. Hosted by Ginger Murray. \nA Hard Day’s Night\, one of the most influential musical films\, remains the zenith of rocksploitation and is considered a forefather of the music video. Part comedy\, part cinéma vérité\, it also launched the career of director Richard Lester and obviously\, the Beatles. Film courtesy of Shannon Ellery Hubbell of Lewtonbus.net. The Little film Review Site that Could. \nLive Music – The BOGUES.\nThe Bogues are a San Francisco based 8-10 piece Pogues celebration band founded by Bay Area songwriter and British Isles transplant Paul Griffiths.”With our bouzouki\, tin whistle\, banjo\, accordion\, mandolin\, guitar\, fiddle\, drums\, and\, when circumstances demand\, trombone\, we celebrate the genius of Shane MacGowan and The Pogues\, inspired by their fiery mix of traditional Irish folk and blood and guts rock ‘n’ roll. Tom Waits described them as ‘brandy of the damned.” For their inaugural show on Saint Patrick’s night in 2012\, San Francisco’s Make Out Room invited The BOGUES to perform the definitive Pogues album ‘Rum\, Sodomy\, and the Lash’ in its entirety. The band has since been invited to play all over the Bay Area. The Bogues include many of the Bay Area’s finest musicians\, and guest luminaries (and Pogues fans) such as the late Ralph Carney (Tom Waits/Elvis Costello/Allen Ginsberg)\, Joshua Raoul Brody (Everyone(!!!) including Robin Williams and Tom Waits)\, Kevin T. White (Chuck Prophet)\, and storyteller Bryan McCaul of Coote Hill\, Ireland. \nhttps://www.paulgriffithsmusic.com/bogues \nStay after for the Active Music Series by Robert Lopez

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 31 \nLower Class Brats\nThe Generators\nVerbal Abuse\nBlank Spots\nHarrington Saints \nDoors 7pm | Show 8pm \n$12 Advance | $15 At the Door \nFormed in 1995 in Austin TX\, Lower Class Brats set out to create music unlike anything else in their city. A mixture of Punk\, Oi!\, ’70s Glam\, and straight ahead rock and roll merged with the theatric imagery of A Clockwork Orange. The band’s first full length\, “Rather Be Hated Than Ignored\,” was released in 1997 on GMM records and became the soundtrack for a fanbase now known as the “LCB Army”.\nLCB members- Bones (vox)\, Marty Volume (guitar)\, Ron Conflict (bass)\, Zed (guitar) and Nick Brat (drums) continue to record and perform after a 20+ year history. Taking great care that every live show is more than just another gig and a night for those in attendance to cut loose\, forget their daily woes and sing\, scream and shout along.\nBe prepared if they come to your town to witness the spectacle. Consider yourself invited…. and warned.\nhttp://www.lcbarmy.com \nThe Generators still carry on strong. SUMMARY:Actual Wolf - Third Tuesday Residency
DESCRIPTION:Actual Wolf – Third Tuesday Residency\n8pm \nThe concept of Nashville\, TN musician Actual Wolf has evolved from ‘man’ to ‘band’. Besides Pollard\, the effort now includes collaborators Steve Garrington\, Jacob Hanson and Jeremy Hanson\, and ‘Actual Wolf’ finds them fully enmeshed and luxuriant in their synergy together. Produced by Alan Sparhawk and mixed by Erik Koskinen\, Actual Wolf comfortably demonstrates the timelessness of meticulous studio technique. Layered vocals and rich\, tube-driven guitars lend a warm patina not out of place resting in a battered sleeve in a dusty record bin. Complex harmonies soar and shimmer\, to hang like restless hawks in the thermals above the rich\, earthy loam of Pollard’s effortless working class poeticism. \nIn these songs\, angels and devils mingle in neutral territory\, and stubborn optimism burns life’s accumulated disappointment as fuel. This is the sound of a New Americana: an accretion of influences as rich\, dense and multicolored as a bed of living coral. Using ragged and tattered maps drawn by the weary\, troubled troubadours of eras past\, Actual Wolf navigates the freshly paved highways of the contemporary palette. \nThe Uptown\n1928 Telegraph Ave\nOakland\, CA \n21+\nFree Entry

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 16\n8PM \nAkes\nLove Jerks\n$8\n21+ | wheelchair accessible \nAKES\nConsisting of an audio engineer\, an author\, a videographer\, and a luthier\, the four members of Bay Area ensemble Akes take their music into their own hands; Nick Cafiero (electric ukulele/vocals)\, Joe DeMars (bass)\, Jack Hogan (guitar)\, and Dominic Bergamini (drums)—handle nearly every aspect of their creative lives in house. They are dedicated students of their craft from the gear they play to the music that influences them. \nThat mindset is a fitting accompaniment to their heady sound. Taking inspiration from the post-punk scenes in the U.K. and U.S. where dozens of bands allowed themselves the freedom to mash up instrumentation and musical textures\, Akes winds in the sounds of synthesizers\, sequencers\, and drum machines into already finely honed material cut from pop/rock cloth. These sounds are the beginnings of a new creative regime for a band that has already been wowing audiences in and around their Bay Area scene. \nAlthough the idea of nostalgia is a constant theme in their music\, the quartet doesn’t live in the past. Instead\, each member has channeled their experiences into a melodic complexity and poetic openness that resonates with their local Sonoma County home and beyond. The fluid nature of each song and the assured delivery of every note and verse speaks to the solidity of four intertwined paths\, years in the making. \nLOVE JERKS\nLove Jerks is a San Francisco duo who make future-sound New Wave anthems and dream-pop ballads that leave you no choice but to dance\, or swoon\, or both. The offspring of two longtime lead singers—Bryan & Rebecca. \nFLEETING TRANCE\nThe creation of bay-area songwriter\, producer\, and multi-instrumentalist\, Manasseh (Ma’NASA) Bernal\, Fleeting Trance is a project defying classification\, category\, and genre. It is instead a musical collage of approaches\, influences\, and instrumentation varying from song to song. The inclusion of multi-faceted musicians\, Craig Koozer (bass)\, Daren Wilkerson (drums)\, Scott Robertson (guitar)\, John Howard (pedal/lap steel)\, and Mike Chase (keys) serve to further compliment Bernal\, resulting in vastly unique and sensual soundscapes demonstrating widespread influences.
