Korea’s first traditional ska band\, Kingston Rudieska\, has been paying respect to the roots since they began in 2004. The nine- piece band blends bluebeat ska\, jazz\, reggae\, dub\, and nyahbinghi chanting into a final product that is uniquely Korean; something the band has dubbed “Feast Ska.” Their shows mix foot-stomping instrumentals – fronted by a four-piece horn section – with warm\, soulful vocal features sung by “Sugar” Seok Yul Lee. Their performances are punctuated with a jammy\, improv vibe as many of the members are trained jazz musicians. The music pays enormous respect to\, ska pioneers\, The Skatalites. It’s not uncommon\, during a set\, to hear an impromptu Skatalites cover kick off an improvisational jam to the delight of the crowd.\nOver the past decade\, they’ve come a long way from playing dingy basement clubs to appearing on some of the nation’s biggest stages\, fostering a love of Jamaican rhythms to a nation still newly discovering the genre. DESCRIPTION:Active Music Series presents:\n– Apartment D\n– Madalyn Merkey\n– Jon Arkin & Jordan Glenn \nApartment D is an electro-improv duo that explores sound and space by combining live electronic processing and experimental performance of voice and pipa during improvisation. Ingibjörg Friðriksdóttir (https://www.ingibjorgf.com/) brings a background of both experimental electronic music and vocal training from Iceland. Sophia Shen (http://www.shensiyang.com/) combines her traditional Chinese pipa playing techniques with her new approaches to the instrument. She has performed solo computer music compositions at Yale Union\, Issue Project Room\, and Block Cinema\, and designed sound installations for Robert Irwin’s Central Garden at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Merkey is the English translator of the Italian music text Due scuole di musica elettronica in Italia (Die Schachtel\, 2016)\, written by composer Enore Zaffiri and published in Milan originally by Silva Editore in 1968.
