SUMMARY:Big Butterfly plays Scott Amendola's Birthday Bash!
DESCRIPTION:Big Butterfly + The Scott Amendola Quartet \nWhy not celebrate another trip around the sun with a free show? Let’s get pop and jazz and\, well f*** it\, just play some music! \nBig Butterfly\nIs this rock’n’roll? Is it jazz? Is it Japanese\, electronic Zydeco music? Big Butterfly is a metamorphosis (or should we say\, meta-bro-phosis) of the dual forces of Scott Amendola and Zach Ostroff. Their original compositions for finding love in a disastrous world\, back-to-back covers of Britney Spears and Ray Charles\, World War II ballads\, and spontaneously improvised soundscapes coalesce into streams of constantly-evolving\, heartfelt\, booty-grooving music.\nWhen you read how Wikipedia defines Scott Amendola as a drummer\, electronic musician\, and orchestral composer as “central to the Bay Area music scene\,” a certain degree of skepticism is understandable. But when you hear him play\, you hear a drum master whose virtuosity only serves his desire to create genuinely felt music; his music transforms the desire for answers into a seeking of questions. \nHow do we define Zach Ostroff? “Bassist? Guitarist? Singer? Film composer?” He answers these questions with his latest obsession\, the Bass VI\, an historically neglected instrument that is precisely one octave lower than a standard guitar. Wielding this axe\, he turns into bassist/guitarist/vocalist/sonic-explorer all at once. \nHumans can find great joy in the most epic and trying of times. Sometimes\, all it takes is the mutual trust of two musical risk-takers. That is what Big Butterfly hopes to find. \nScott Amendola Quartet:\nRaffi Garabedian-tenor saxophone\, Danny Lubin-Laden: trombone\, Zach Ostroff-bass\, Scott Amendola-drums/percussion/electronics \nOriginal music in a chordless quartet of drums\, acoutic bass\, saxophone\, and trombone. Jazz? Okay… let’s push the boundries of that. Playing music by everyone in the band. Groove\, free\, whatever! \n21+ with valid ID\nThe Uptown is located just around the corner from the 19th Street BART Station and is wheelchair accessible

This configuration requires each individual to simultaneously take on multiple roles typically assigned individual players (soloist versus accompanist)\, thereby promoting more open-ended explorations of the material. Kasey Knudsen- alto saxophone\, Eric Vogler- guitar\, Lorin Benedict- voice.\nhttp://lorinbenedict.com/music-103.html \nFELLOW HOMINIDS\nFellow Hominids is the most recent project of saxophonist and composer Cory Wright\, featuring jazz and improv veterans John Schott and John Finkbeiner on guitars and Jordan Glenn on drums. The compositions run the gamut from meditative and minimal to sharply tailored grooves to blunderbuss attacks – a piece might provide a wide open field\, a tight rope\, or a wrestling pit for the group’s interactions. These four Bay Area musicians have played together in a wide variety of settings and configurations over the past 15 years and a feeling of camaraderie and playfulness informs all of the band’s impulses and musical decisions. \nDOORS @ 8\nMUSIC @ 8:30\nNOTAFLOF\n$5-15 DONATION

SUMMARY:Skateboard Hall of Fame "MoFo" Art Show at the Uptown
DESCRIPTION:As is common with many artists\, we keep our heads down and hope that those with insight will eventually recognize us. So is the case of Morizen Fouche aka “MoFo”\, when he was inducted into the Skateboard Hall of Fame in 2016. Starting with Thrasher Magazine\, founded in Jan 1981\, hiring MoFo as their second official employee. He photographed\, wrote copy\, designed and layed out much of the monthly bifold publication.\nThese days\, you can pick up any skateboard publication and see his influence. From editor’s notes to articles to ads\, his attitude and humor are there. Back in the day when skaters skated away from cameras\, MoFo was trusted as one of them. He photographed legendary skaters in their natural habitat. Parks\, ramps\, pools\, curbs…..you name it! MoFo was there! Think about it\, the backyard pool with Jay Alabamy frontside grind\, drinkin’ a beer! Or Jay Adams slashing the coping at Steve Caballero’s backyard wooden half pipe! Come on……Seriously! What a time that must have been!\nThe Uptown is stoked to have this legendary figure as our next featured Artist. His work will be up for about 6 weeks\, but the real clutch time is on Feb 21st: \nFeb 21: Art Reception & Drunk Injunz & JFA\n-5-7pm: open to the public\, Art’s Reception. This will be a rare opportunity for you to meet and purchase signed pieces from the artist himself. I am told that he has dug into his archives and pulled out some sweet dusty beauties for our viewing pleasure. \n-7-8pm: we gotta clear the space to get ready for a night of ragin’ punk rock! \n-8p-2a: As if he couldn’t be any cooler\, do you remember that legendary punk band Drunk Injunz? Well…he’s the singer! Oooops…. did I just say that out loud? Yeah well\, since this is MoFo’s 60th birthday\, these Indian Ghost Warriors will be having a rare appearance. A voodoo like no other! You really should get your tickets for this before it’s too late. Just sayin” https://www.eventbrite.com/e/skate-rock-legends-drunk-injuns-jfa-and-clay-wheels-tickets-85345700287 \nIf you’re a skater and you appreciate the giants who’s shoulders you stand\, then you should come out for this giant. MoFo is a humble bad ass who shaped so……. much of what is todays skateboard culture! FYI \n– – – \n21 and over with valid ID

SUMMARY:Skate Rock Legends: Drunk Injuns\, JFA and Clay Wheels
DESCRIPTION:Legendary Skate Rockers Drunk Injuns distroy the Uptown Friday\, Feb 21st.\nSkateboard culture stands of the shoulders of giants who have paved the way. The line up for this event is stacked with heavy hitters of early Thrasher and Punk days. \nSkateboard Hall of Famer\, Morizen “Mofo” Foche\, the OG photographer for Thrasher Magazine when it was a bifold paper\, will be installing a litany of images of Cab\, Hosoi….. back in the day. Don’t miss this singular opportunity to purchase this historical stuff! \nDrunk Injuns (Alternative Tentacles)\nCelebrating Mofo’s 60th bird day is his Legendary band Drunk Injuns.\nLong before Slipknot went platinum and the X-Games became a nationally broadcasted sporting event\, Drunk Injuns wore scary Native American garb and masks while helping pioneer skate rock\, a genre that came about in the early ’80s that combined punk rock’s nihilism with the skater ethos. Despite doing very little recordings\, the band’s legacy lives on through their sparce but epic shows. If you care at all about Old School Skate Rock\, you don’t want to miss this! \nJ.F.A. (Jodie Foster’s Army)\nThese guys were huge back in the day. Their energy defined everything that an unsettled youth needed. Music and Skating!\nSeparated as they were from the dying New York and U.K. punk scenes and the ’80s punk hotbed in Los Angeles\, JFA pursued their own brand of skatepunk that celebrated the suburban release sun burnt skaters experienced while carving swimming pools and desert pipes. The band demonstrates their adventurousness as well as their aggression: two qualities that have always existed in rare proportions for these old-school skatepunks. Surf elements\, some keyboards\, clever lyrics\, and a zealous devotion to the skating ideals and lifestyle are what always separated this group\, and earned them respect from punkers everywhere. ~ Vincent Jeffries\, Rovi \nClay Wheels:\nFeatured on tons of skate videos and skate documentaries. Rockin’ out live by the deep-end coping during the Masters Pool contest. Clay Wheels is no stranger to the true meaning of Skate Punk. Around renegade park\, you could find a Clay Wheels sticker. The band features skate rock pioneer Ray Stevens II on bass and vocals(Los Olvidados\, The Faction\,Drunk Injuns\,Odd Man Out)\, Jonny Manak guiatar and vocals(The Cliftons\,Fang\, The Depressives) and Eric Powers on drums/no vocals(The Careless Hearts\,The Pimpsticks\,Whiskey Sunday). \nDevil Sliders:\nThe newest generation of skate rockers! These kids kill! You won’t believe how much these youngsters blaze. The Devils Sliders consists of brothers Easton and Colter Romero from Santa Cruz\, California. Easton 15 on drums & backup vox and Colter 13 on guitar & lead vox. Skateboarding\, surfing\, heavy jams\, good friends and good times are what drives these kids to play. Music inspirations include Black Sabbath\, Red Fang\, Slayer\, Bl’ast\, the Sword\, and Suicidal Tendencies to name a few.

SUMMARY:You Should Be Here: An R&B Party hosted by Raphael Saadiq
DESCRIPTION:Discounted admission night of with Fox ticket stub \nRaphael Saadiq is a Grammy Award winning musician\, songwriter and go-to collaborator/producer for some of the biggest names in R&B. Solange Knowles\, John Legend\, Mary J. Blige\, D’Angelo\, Ne-Yo and Miguel are among the many artists who turn to Saadiq for his deep musicality\, contemporary creative vision and encyclopedic knowledge of timeless pop music. \nBorn in Oakland CA\, Raphael grew up singing gospel music in the church and started playing bass guitar at the age of six. On the strength of the musical and stage training he received at Castlemont High School\, Saadiq auditioned for Sheila E and landed a spot in her band which supported Prince on his 1986 Parade world tour. \nAfter honing his chops on the road\, Saadiq returned to Oakland and formed the group Tony! Toni! Toné! with his brother D’Wayne Wiggins and cousin Timothy Riley. The trio went on to enjoy considerable success on radio and MTV in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s\, racking up several hits including “If I Had No Loot\,” “Feels Good\,” “Anniversary” and the iconic “It Never Rains (In Southern California).” \nFollowing four albums with Tony! Toni! Toné!\, Saadiq formed the urban supergroup Lucy Pearl in 1999 along with Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest and Dawn Robinson from En Vogue\, yielding Dance Tonight. His solo career kicked off with 2002’s Instant Vintage and 2004’s Ray Ray. Critics began taking special notice with the release of his 2008 homage to Motown and Philly soul\, The Way I See It\, and it’s follow-up\, Stone Rollin’(2011)\, which landed on many year-end Top Ten best albums lists. \nConsequence of Sound spoke for many critics in their review\, writing\, “Saadiq [is] a true soul master” who “revitalizes the…genre by taking nearly every step he can to create an almost flawless record.” Saadiq’s on-stage performances garner equal praise. NPR called his SXSW appearance in support of Stone Rollin’ “a full-blown soul revue….When a guy this cool exerts this much effort\, it’s a joy to behold.” \nWhile his solo career thrived\, Saadiq honed his craft as a producer\, working with a wide range of artists\, including Snoop Dogg\, Little Dragon\, Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder. He remains a true musician’s musician\, with Justin Timberlake\, Elton John\, Mick Jagger and Lady Gaga among the many superstars who tapped him to play bass or guitar on high-profile projects\, including Gaga’s memorable David Bowie tribute at the 2016 Grammy Awards. He co-wrote career-defining hits for D’Angelo (“Untitled (How Does It Feel)”) and Solange (“Cranes in the Sky”)\, and his compositions have been covered\, sampled or referenced by everyone from Ed Sheeran to Drake. \nIn 2012\, Saadiq was named to Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list and in 2017\, he received an Academy Award nomination in the category of Best Original Song for “Mighty River” from the film Mudbound\, which he co-wrote with Mary J. Blige. On television\, Saadiq is the composer in residence for Isa Rae’s hit HBO show Insecure. His highly anticipated next solo album\, Jimmy Lee\, was release in August 2019. \n – – – \n21+ with valid ID

SUMMARY:Latin Dance Party - A Benefit for Dancing Saved My Life
DESCRIPTION:((( Tickets))) \nDancing Saved My Life is a grassroots community started by Andreina Febres\, a Bay Area Zumba instructor who lost her mother to cancer\, and her student\, Joy Glasier\, who was going through cancer treatment in 2014. \nAndreina wanted to find a way to support the cancer community.
