JONATHAN TOUBIN spins raw, wild, rare, and uncommon original 7-inch vinyl by unsung artists of the ’50s and ’60s on the beat of today’s dance floor. When Village Voice awarded him as Best DJ in their 60th anniversary Best of New York City publication, they wrote, “Since 2007, Toubin’s Soul Clap and Dance-Off has brought throwback pizzazz and retro cool to New York’s late-night underground. Culled from an endless array of long-forgotten ’60s soul singles, Soul Clap is pure musical dynamite, the kind of party that exposes today’s iTunes-bred, press-play DJs for their relative lack of roots and ingenuity. No fist-bumps or atomic bass drops here; instead, Toubin lovingly crafts sets that bring lost chestnuts from the likes of Vernon Harrell and the Blendells into clearer focus for a new generation of dance enthusiasts. You can try to put your moves to better use, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find more cathartic, sweatier fun elsewhere in the city.”
BAUS is a no-wave, funky post-punk trio from Oakland. In Razorcake, Camyle Reynolds wrote, “A foundation of bass bounces in and out of step with funk-influenced drums is layered atop of odd and anxious post-punk guitar. The melodies of bass and guitar wander different paths, cross, join, rip apart, and bounce along. Mike’s shrill and uneasy vocals add to their unconventional charm, punctuated by some pretty rad shrieks from Sierra. It’s not too often that you find a band that sounds this unique.”
TH’ LOSIN STREAKS are Sacramento’s lovable ‘60s garage punk ruffians. Their new LP “This Band Will Self-Destruct In T-Minus” is out now on Slovenly. It’s their first album in 14 years!
ABRILITA (B-Side Brujas) and DJ MARTHA QUEEN spin soul grooves and more. They are both kicking off the night behind the turntables and are also taking part in the midnight dance-off as judges! Wow!
RUSSELL QUAN is a Bay Area treasure. He has been a crucial member of countless rad bands over the years, including The Mummies, The Bobbyteens, The Flakes, The Tight Fits, The Dukes Of Hamburg, and many more. Russell will be the guest DJ selector spinning records during the midnight dance-off.
