The Surfaris, The Greasy Gills
$20Saturday, October 12
Doors 8pm
The single-most famous surf tune of all time is “Wipe Out” by the Surfaris. With its wicked laugh, cutting lead guitar, and drum solos, the song spent four months on the Billboard charts. Along with “Surfer Joe” and “Point Panic” The Surfaris solidified themselves as the leaders of surf music in the mid ’60s.
The Surfaris were close friends and contemporaries of the late great Dick Dale, regarded as the pioneer of the surf guitar. Dick Dale had performed sold out shows at The Uptown on eight separate occasions. He had become a friend to us all, and we miss him dearly. So in memory of Dick, The Uptown presents The Surfaris for one night only. Join us in welcoming this genre defining band to Oakland for the first time.
Also performing will be Oakland’s reverb-drenched instrumental surf trio, The Greasy Gills. They self-released their debut cassette, Bodega Boys, in 2018. And this August, Hi-Tide Recordings released The Spring Collection EP, The Greasy Gills’ 4-track 7″ record.
